Before watching this game I was on the fence regarding this topic... no more.  Play tough defense and make them tie you with an amazing play. 

KU almost won in regulation because of the foul... second free throw misses, Wall gets a great look from three to almost complete the four point play.  Yes, a lot of things have to go right, but they sometimes do.

There is no guarantee in ANYTHING, no one EVER said there was.  It's about what is riskier.  Allowing 1 thing to happen (a 3 pointer), or having to have 4 things happen (make a free throw, miss a free throw on purpose, get the rebound, and make the 2 pointer).

There are no guarantees in life.


Memphis is likely the national champion if they would have employed that strategy of fouling, but they didn't.

I dont think it is that simple.  It is fouling at the right time.  Not too early where they can get another possession.  Fouling them when they are not shooting.  And than fouling them when the refs say they are not shooting.  Also, are you a tall team, a short team.  Do you have a propensity of giving up offensive rebounds, is the other team a good 3 point shooting team, etc.  I just don't think it is so clear cut and dry as some make it sound here.  Haven't we had 2 situations just this week where fouling backfired and another where it could have backfired (Cincy game)?

Oh and in the MU/ND game, ND needed a lot of things to go right to make their 3 point shot.  Great defense forcing bad miss, ND rebound, as player is behind backboard and falling out of bounds, passes inbounds, scramble toward ball, Cooby leaves man he is guarding, pass to 3 point shooter and made shot.  Lots of moving parts on that one.

Regarding the strategy of fouling and the things that have to happen, I don't think it takes much to intentionally miss a free throw.

This is the exact point I was about to make. The flukish play that led to UK tying the game wasn't much different than the flukish play that resulted in ND tying the game. Both Marquette and MSU executed what they were coached to do. The ball just didn't bounce their way.
