Pacers waive Travis Diener

The Indiana Pacers announced on Monday they have waived former Marquette star Travis Diener.

Diener played just four games for the Pacers this season. He had surgery on the big toe of his left foot which set him back this season.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 1, 2010

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Pacers announced Monday they have waived guard Travis Diener.

The 6-1 Diener had played in just four games this season, largely due to an injury to the big toe on his left foot that required surgery. In his previous two seasons with the Pacers, Diener played in 121 games and averaged 5.4 points and 3.0 assists. He was signed as a free agent in 2007 after playing two years in Orlando.

"We want to thank Travis for his time with us," said Pacers President of Basketball Larry Bird. "Unfortunately, he struggled with injuries while with us and that held him back. He's a tough player who I'm sure will contribute somewhere in the NBA. We wish him the best."

I assume he was set to be a free agent this off season, is that correct?

damuts222

I think Diener will be signed somewhere with a 10-day contract of some sort, I think if he improved his defense he would get more minutes. Good run though at Indy, injuries no doubt played a major role in his being waived.

The Bucks should sign him. It'd cost them almost nothing and be good PR.

Knight Commission

If noone signs him he should start preparing for his next career as D1 head basketball coach.....

MuMark

I think with the right team Travis could have a Luke Ridinour type career.

They really are very similar players.....Luke is probably a little quicker but Travis is smart and doesn't make many mistakes with the ball.

In all honesty, he's from the same mold as Scott Skiles. Although I have no idea who their PGs are or their situation.

Bucks have a young stud in Brandon Jennings and a good vet in Luke Ridnour. Also, have Charlie Bell and Royal Ivey on the bench. He found a better opportunity in Portland than he would with the Bucks.

+1

Also, his career is more Steve Alford-esque

than Scott Skiles-esque.  Skiles was much physically stronger and more durable than either Alford or Deiner.

This could actually be a really good year for players like Diener.  Diener is cheap and he can shoot the ball.  If teams break the bank on James, Wade, Bosh, and all the other studs, they will need cheap players to fill out their rosters.  Diener has experience and can knock down the shots that those guys can create for them.  It's best for him to get out of Indiana.

I hope not, there's a lot about that mold that isn't very good.

They only have Ridnour and Ivey until the end of the year (IIRC) and Charlie Bell is more of a SG than a PG.  Diener could back up Jennings, realistically.

Now, having said that, I hope the Bucks sign someone better in the off season... I love TD, but he has yet to prove to me that he is worthy of being a backup PG.

Happy Birthday, Travis.  You've been waived.   I guess his 2nd present is a contract with Portland, so hey, even steven.

muwarrior69

I was on the cracked sidewalk site that had a link about the team on twitter. Someone there just posted that Portland just signed Travis.

Pacers waive Diener.

Trailblazers sign Diener.

Pacers travel to play against the Trailblazers tonight.

Doubtful that Diener suits up tonight but how ironic that would have been to see Travis contribute immediately vs his "old" team.

Not that I should really say anything, but, holy cow does he have a thick Wisconsin accent.
I think that there are some hockey players saying "Jeez, what an accent."  ;D

TallTitan34

I noticed the Trailblazers roster page has Travis listed as number 27.  Interesting he didn't go with 34 as no one else is using it.

mu_hilltopper

Just because I'd forgotten .. Travis is listed at $1.7m per year.  Niice.
