Smart Phone Support (iPhone, Android...)
« on: February 08, 2010, 06:15:40 PM »
Just looking for ideas on how we can better support smart phone users (since nearly everyone has them now...).  I know our full site is a little clunky for the small screens, but the WAP version of the site is a little to "lite".

Tapatalk looks like an interesting option brought up by MUsoxfan, but I'mm willing to listen to other ideas.

There is an app (tapatalk) that several message boards use that makes them much easier to navigate.   Unfortunately, none of those are sites I frequent.

We'll see what we can do....after the first of March ;)

The HTML version of Scoop works great on my Eris (though it is prone to accidental link pressing, but that's more on the phone). I haven't figured out how to force it to the WAP version, which would be nice if I just want to breeze through new posts. Otherwise, no complaints.

Isn't there built-in code in the message board software to allow for iPhone/Android/BB/Palm/etc. customization?

I think the site works fine from my iPhone, but I'd read and participate more as a mobile-ready design. Since you are using SMF for the forum, maybe just this iPhone theme (that I believe is Android / Palm Pre compatible since they are all WebKit browsers) would be enough for 90% of the mobile users out there?

If not, I've personally been toying with jQtouch (http://jqtouch.com/) and Titanium lately. Very cool, but would both require getting the data out of SMF. From what I saw, SMF doesn't really have an API, so that route would be harder than necessary.

I'm happy to help / test. My web development skills are a little rusty, but years of user experience and project management has made my ability to critique things a fine art :)
