Looking for Weekend Get-away in Dells
« on: December 28, 2009, 03:03:12 PM »
My wife and I are going to MU for the S. Florida game Feb 13, which is right around our aniversary.  I was thinking of taking her to a nice get away spot in the dells for an extended weekend.  any suggestions on a B&B or something like that?

Not so sure about Door County, as we ain't got no water slides up here. Even if we did, they'd probably be frozen that time of year.

There are plenty of places.  Depends on what you want.

Chula Vista is really nice, and should have REALLY good rates in Feb.

Kohler would be the place to go if you want to spend some cash.

I'll co-sign Chili's recommendation.

I've been to the Dells, Door County, and Lake Geneva.   For some sort of anniversary thing, the Dells would be my last choice.

My recommendation .. I think I would add Galena as my top choice in February.  Dells is 130 miles, Galena and Door County is ~180, Lake Geneva at 60.

It's all about what you guys can do when you leave your room.  The Dells and Door County kind of shut down in the winter (except for indoor water parks, if that's your thing).  Lake Geneva has a downtown, but after 20 minutes, you're done there.

Galena's downtown is very nice, lots of shops and restaurants all in a 6 block row.  The country-side there is just gorgeous, rolling hills, etc.   -- I can't say how seasonal Galena is .. I was there in April and everything was open .. I figure with its setup (everything in packed in 6 blocks) that things probably stay open.

For that special occasion or if you want to show da Mrs. a good time and such, can't go wrong with Sybaris. Just bring your own can of Lysol, especially if you get the room EAT just vacated.

Most of the shops in downtown galena and all of the resturants will be open then.  there's also some skiing in the area, both downhill and CC if that's something you like.

Wouldn't do the dells anytime of the year.  I think alot of door co. closes up for the winter.

I would recommend against the Dells for an anniversary weekend get-away for the following reasons:

1) All of the nice resorts have indoor waterparks which means kids all over the place.  Don't get me wrong, I love children... but the last thing I want to deal with on my anniversary is a bunch of children running and screaming all over the place.

2) There are no B&B's, boutique hotels, etc. that I would consider romantic in the Dells.  Some advertise that they are, but believe me, they're full of it.

3) If you want to do something more than just sit in a hotel room, options are limited during the winter months as most of the outdoor attractions are closed.

4) Nightlife S-U-C-K-S in the Dells.  Unless you're 21 and just looking to go out somewhere and get drunk fast.

5) The only adult attractions in the Dells are two "gentlemen's clubs" you probably wouldn't want to take your wife to (unless she's open minded, in which case, congratulations) and the casino.  Again... assuming you want something romantic, not a heck of a lot of options.

However, if spending time with your wife is what matters most, and you don't care about what's going on around you, let me make the following suggestions (the highest recommendations listed first):

Hotel - Wilderness (they have condo rentals that are nice & cozy, but typically designed for more than two people), Great Wolf or Kalahari

Restaurant - Jimmy's Del Bar, Field's at the Wilderness or House of Embers
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Stayed at this B&B in Sheboygan Falls (http://www.rochesterinn.com/) last summer for a wedding.  Wife seemed to enjoy it.  Close to Kohler and 50 miles from downtown MKE.

In the public interest, I googled this "Chubbies" .. turns out it's for sale!    Maybe MUScoop should branch out, diversify our interests.  Turn it into a MU-friendly gentleman's club.

That is Chubbys North - NOT that Chubbys in the Dells. Chubbys North is between Chippewa Falls and Wausau on HWY 29.
