McNeal welcomes circus

Marquette guard Jerel McNeal will work out in Minnesota and with the Bucks next week, after the draft combine concludes this weekend.

McNeal, a Chicago native who has been working out in his hometown at Attack Athletics, is expected to be a second-round pick.

"It's real intense," he said. "It's been like a circus since I've gotten down here, but it's been real fun. It's great being around such a group of good guys, unbelievable talents."

Former MU teammates Wes Matthews and Dominic James already have worked out for the Bucks, so they might have some tips for McNeal about what to expect.

"I'm going to make sure I call those guys and see how it went for them," McNeal said.

McNeal starred as a defender for the Golden Eagles. He believes that reputation will help him in the draft, along with the experience he gained in the Big East going against Thabeet, Pitt's DeJuan Blair and Louisville's Earl Clark, all likely lottery selections. But he is not sure where he will end up.

"A lot is determined by what happens with the younger guys after the deadline," McNeal said, referring to the June 15 deadline for underclassmen to withdraw from the draft. "And it depends on what team has a good feel for you."

McNeal has had five workouts thus far, with Detroit, Oklahoma City, Miami, Washington, and a multiple-team workout in Houston. McNeal said he had a chance to speak with former MU star and Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade.

"He happened to be in town getting some rehab," McNeal said. "He definitely has a sense of pride and is happy for the career I had, trying to carry on the Marquette legacy after he left."

thats nice to hear that D-Wade is looking out for Jerel and being a MU Mentor in a sense. That would be sick if Jerel went to the Heat with D-Wade and all that young talent there!

Why are both Wes and Dom not at the Chicago Combines this weekend?

No clue.

Is the Chicago Combine only for projected late 1st rounder and early 2nd rounders?

Wes seems like a mid-late 2nd rounder. DJ, though it would be a crazy day if he was selected, probably would have to sign as a FA.
