Brown is one of Lanphier's best students. He ranks No. 9 in a class of 252 and carries a 5.2 grade- point average on a weighted 4.0 scale. He needed only a credit in government to complete high school in three years.

But remaining in high school for a fourth year is something Brown, a National Honor Society member and an Illinois State Scholar who plans to study engineering, wanted.

He won't be walking on to the basketball team unless he wants to give up his track scholarship and pay his own way.  NCAA rules state that when a scholarship athlete from the smaller sports wants to walk on to basketball or football team, his scholarship now counts against the basketball or football team instead of the other sport.  

Its their way of keeping schools from stashing football/basketball players on one of the lower teams to get around the scholarship limit.

I thought there was some NCAA rule that an athlete  could not compete in basketball, football or hockey if he was on a athletic sholarship for another sport if basketball had used all 13 scholarships or football or hockey had sued all of theirs.  I could be wrong but thought there was someone odd rule to prevent stashing extra players on teh track or rowing team once the big sports ran out of scholarships.

My guess is that they cobbled together a part academic, part athletic scholarship between the athletic department and the admissions office to make it worthwhile for him to come here.

Remember that track is a two-season sport with indoor in the winter and outdoor in the spring.  He will not be playing basketball.

There are actually many full scholarships.  I know two of the Burke scholarship winners for next years class.  Not sure how many in total are given out.

I don't believe so.  Otherwise you would have schools giving out "academic" scholarships to stack teams that had used up their athletic scholarships.

Pretty hard to turn down an opportunity to go IVY; that way he can play both sports and most likely get a full ride if he qualifies for financial aid (most IVY's give full rides to those who qualify for financial aid as they literally have billions at their disposal from their endowment)
