Tom Crean's Tanning Bed

The General has taken on a new command.

I remember it well. That particular play happened so fast that it was something of a surprise when it happened. Not to "blame" anyone in particular, but it seemed almost like a "touch pass" coming right back at McGuire. Stuff like that "happens". It was just a very bad time for it to happen. Kind of like Lazar. I bet he never does that again, but we'll sure remember the one time he did do it. Going back to '71, I remember that game most for the Pacific 8 referees ( just a "coincidence" that UCLA was in the conference) fouling out Dean Meminger for the first and only time in his career! There were some highly questionable calls, particularly as Dean simply wasn't the type of player to just run over someone. Maybe it's just paranoia that has lasted over 30 years, but Marquette was ranked number one that year for a short time and some experts thought that MU was one of the biggest, if not the biggest obstacle to a UCLA national championship that season.

Anyone here remember this?

Remember? Hell, I was there that night in Athens, Georgia. To this day that game was the most devastating Warrior loss I've ever experienced.

I remember it like it was yesterday. That loss is still painful to me. IMO it was one of three best teams and to end like that was very tough. We got screwed by the refs and losing the Dream to fouls cost us the game.

I believe at least three of Dean's fouls were charges on which OSU players flopped. Awful officiating.

As a selfish MU alum, the most painful thing about that season was losing Chones to the pros. Throw 5 million in my face I'd be gone too!

Agreed. Those were really bad calls.

Ready2Fly

Does this mean MU will win the national championship in 2015?

I think you've got your years confused. The Mideast Regional game discussed here was in March 1971. Jim Chones left MU in February 1972 on the day after the Warriors beat Jacksonville University at the Arena.

I asked my Dad who thought Chones probably fouled out, hence the Spider appearance.
