Gotta agree with Gym. Nothing yet has been as disappointing as losing to tOSU in the Mideast Regional. I know, I was there in Athens, Georgia. The Warriors were rated #2 in the polls and riding a 39 game winning streak. A date with UCLA and Sidney Wicks loomed on the horizon.

Bringing back a lot of memories. Sometimes it is easy to forget the rich history and great teams MU has had over the years. It's a shame a lot of people only look at things through the eyes of ESPN and the so-called "ESPN ERA" as if anything prior is not valid.

My God, I was having a nice, relaxing afternoon at my parents' house for the first time in months.

And then I had to read this list.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit drinking/smoking/sniffing glue/
amphetamines.  :(

That makes me think of ESPN's stupid top college programs since '84-'85 list last summer.  Yeah, I know that was the year that the tourney expanded to 64 teams but what about all the decades of great basketball before that?  Considering this is the same network that comes up with gems such as Titletown and Mount Rushmore of Sports, maybe they'll make a new list: The top college basketball programs since the expansion to 65 teams.   :D

this seems like an awfully long list of heartbreakers.....

The Balding Jerry Smith hitting that 3 at the very end of them game was probably the best loss I ever saw. Oxymoron? kind of but it was a great game

The MSU game was the most frustrating game I've seen. Was I the only one that screamed "shoot him like a horse!" when Ingdong *click click* ibok went down with that elbow dislocation?  (After Wisconsin, UL, Cuse, ND, I hate MSU the most)

-side note I know I wasn't the only one chanting shoot him like a horse when Devendouche went down why didn't more people join in?-

I feel like the original list is rather complete for more of a 'modern' list of heart breakers. I'm sure you can dust off some losses from 30 40 50 years ago that were  crushing.

I think the worst loss in history came at the hands of TCU in 1937  ;)

We had a 4 point lead with 30 seconds left....out of all the UL games, that one had to have been the most brutal in my opinion.  Then again, when you saw all 3 in person, it's hard to remember which one was the worst.

Warning:  you'll need to pop an anti-depressant before reading the list.  Pretty good ranking, for the current era, however.  My all time worst loss was the 1974 NCAA Title game.

Don't know why. If MU had won, it would have been a monumental upset. With Tom Burleson (something like 7'4")  and David Thompson, NC St. was a much better team and they dominated most of the game. Wasn't a blowout, but wasn't close, either.

Thanks Rosiak, that was just the article I needed after all the sh*t MU has endured in the past 3 weeks or so.    Seriously I like the work you do on MU Basketball alot, but.....

Monumental upset?  I don't think so.  Al had a bad coaching night.  His technical cost MU 4 or 5 points.  You get to the championship game and lose, well, it sucks.

NC St. was ranked #1 in the nation, had lost one game over the last two seasons, and had just dethroned UCLA and the Walton Gang in the other national semifinal. Most fans and certainly the media considered that the real championship game. NC St. was solidly favored over Marquette and won pretty easily, 76-64. We were leading by one point late in the first half when Al got the first of his two Ts and that turned the game. NC St. scored 10 straight to take control and led 39-30 at halftime. They stretched the margin to 19 points in the first 5 minutes of the second half and it was over. Without the Ts, maybe it would have been a battle all the way. But a Marquette win over that NC St. team absolutely would have been a major upset.

OK, Hal, you win.  (We were ranked #3 in the final poll before the tourney, so I still don't see it as "monumental"), but I'm still going to claim it as my personal worst loss.  I was a junior in high school, and that was the first year I really paid attention to MUBB.

73-74 was my freshman year. In those days, new AP-UPI rankings came out each week even during the tournament. At the end of the regular season, we were mid to bottom top 10. Last game was at Cincinnati, and they killed us 92-77. After we beat Ohio, Vanderbilt and Michigan, we moved up in the rankings and were #3 going to into final four. Vandy did MU a bit of a favor, upsetting John Shumate's ND team, which had beaten us by 6 in January. As for the NC St. game, saying it would have been a "monumental" upset if MU had won may have been overstating it, even though virtually no one gave us a chance. I'd say it would have been a "major" upset.

Maurice Lucas, Bo Ellis, Earl Tatum, Marcus Washington and Lloyd Walton with Rick Campbell and Eddie Daniels off the bench. Terrific team!

My list-

1) Kansas, 2003. F-ing embarrassing.
2) Stanford, 2008. F-ing Lopez.
3) UL, 2003. F-ing Gaines.
4) Duke, 1994. F-ing Refs.
5) Gtown, 2008. F-ing Wallace.
6) UL, 2007. F-ing Smith
7) UL, 2005. F-ing Garcia. F-ing Amoroso.
8) VTech- 1995 NIT. F-ing Smith.
9) Bama, 2006. F-ing Felix.
10) VU, yesterday. F-ing Jerel.

Because that game was in the NIT, I think people don't rank it as high. But they should.

That game sucked as the refs called what should have been a no-call so that FTs could decide the game with seconds to spare.

HORRIBLE.
