This topic has probably already been posted in the past, but why do we play Jump Around at the BC?

Anyone from the state knows that this song is so closely tied to UW and the start of the 4th Qtr at their lame football games that it just seems unnecessary for us to use it as well.  I recognize many sports teams use this song, but most of those are not bitter rivals with the team that has really made it part of their student section tradition.

4thAndState

No one school "owns" this song. In fact, its become a game tradition for MU. "Jump Around Guy," an alumni with near center court seats, is one of the great fan favorites.

Marquette_g

Those around me in section 219 find both the use of the song and the "Jump Around Guy Tradition" quite contrived.

ZiggysFryBoy

did you know that the badger student section invented jumping up and down to jump around?

Marquette_g

I didn't say they invented it, but they certainly have a greater level of recognition in being tied to that song.  My point is simply that there are other song choices to which we could attempt to have people get excited for.

Although with last night's ~200 students in attendance, I'm not really sure it makes much of a difference.

Don't know about section 219, but the rest of the BC really seems to appreciate this "tradition."

Hey Marquette G, I think ZFB was playing a funny on you.

I wouldn't say that at all.   In fact you're the first person I've ever heard of that liked it.  Everyone I've ever heard talk about it has complained about copying Madison and how MU should stop using the song.  The only ones that seem to like it are the ones that don't know the Badgers do it, and once you inform them of that, they dislike it as well.

There's even been people booing the Jump Around Guy this year, and the number seems to increase each game.

I need to see a video of the "jump around guy." Can someone tape him Saturday and put it on you tube?

Who cares?

Obviously those of us who have taken time to post on the topic.

Are you serious?  Can ANYONE lighten up a bit?  What's the big F'in deal?  It's a song.  I can't believe all of you stuffy people who get so huffy about this stuff.  Chill out.

It's like you suffocate the fun out of everything.  Honestly.  There ALWAYS have to be something wrong.  It's just complaining about all the things about Marquette basketball you don't like.  I just don't get it.  I think  the jumping guy is funny and it's fun to jump around and be ridiculous in the stands.  There are so many debbie downers that come out of the woodwork on this board once the season starts.

If you're going to take the time out to post a topic hating something at least have a alternate ready to use.

Speaking of music... no one mentioned last night's big head.

Bono. Perhaps a sign of things to come...

Perhaps Kris Kross "Jump"

Lame song, but same relative time period and theme.

This is by no means keeping me up a night.  I have no venom about this, it was something that has struck me while at the games and I thought I would post on the topic to see if I was the only one who thinks we may be copy catting UW on this.  I do not get angry when it is played, I simply think we could do our own thing.  This is a 2 on a 10 pt scale in terms of my level of thinking about this.

I actually love it. Anybody else in for wearing some baseball jerseys backwards for the next game?

MarquetteFan94

People honestly have a problem with the "Jump Around Guy?"  Wow.  I suppose they don't have to watch him then.

I hate it when people enjoy themselves and show a little energy at the games.  Maybe he can be replaced by a guy in a gold sweater vest with his arms folded that never gets off his ass over the course of the game and only complains.

Marquette_g

I have no problem with him whatsoever.  I just thought we could have a different song for him to jump up and down to.

MU gimp ONE

i actually like the use of it... especially for packed house games like this weekend.  i have heard that song used at a ton of different sporting events from MU basketball to Penn State women's volleyball... no one team owns it.  i also like the "jump around guy".  as it's something unique to Marquette that has even gotten some love on Sportscenter.

I'll tell one thing I'm glad is no longer visible at the BC... "the boxer boys" in the front of the student section.  let's see where this thread goes now.

Leave RedWebster out of this.

I love google...

The story behind the 'Jump Around' tradition:
Smith and his wife used to sit on the side of the Marquette team, but a few years ago their seating assignments were relocated so they were sitting by the students. The students' tradition of jumping during the games caused Smith to discover his own inner-jumper.

"During the course of the game when they played the "Jump Around" song the students would all jump. The jumping becomes kind of contagious and infectious. I sit by the adults and alumni, and I made a comment that there were no adults jumping. My wife pushed me to start jumping and as soon as I (did) a camera got on me. I did it again at the next game and the next thing I knew I ended up on ESPN and the local news stations. ESPN called me 'The Ron Burgundy of Milwaukee.' After that it took on a life of its own. I don't know when it's going to end, but right now it's a fun thing."

How does his wife feel about the "jumping around?"
Smith's wife, Joan, said contrary to many people's perceptions she is extremely supportive of her husband's game time ritual.

"People say on the JumboTron I look disgusted or mad, but I think it's wonderful. Of all his accomplishments, this is the one I'm most proud of."
