When is an airball not a shot attempt?  If that's actually the rule it's pretty stupid.

When the referee doesn't think it was one.  Its been the rule for a long time now.

I'm confused.  Doesn't an airball mean that you're shooting the ball?

Example. A player picks up his dribble and is quickly closed out by a big man. The player "shoots" an airball, quickly gets around the big to get the "rebound." A ref would rightly judge this to not be an actual shot attempt.

This rule changed probably 30 years ago by the way. You likely didn't notice because its not a common occurrence.

So the ref determines that shot as a pass??  Like it was an alley oops?

Why is this so hard to understand? If someone shoots an airball, and the ref considers it a legit shot attempt, they can be the first to touch it. If the refs believes otherwise, then its a travel.

For arguments sake, it.can be considered a dumb rule because it adds subjectivity.

When is an airball not a "legit shot attempt"?  None of this makes any sense to me.

I don't disagree.

If someone threw an alley oop but it completely misses the intended target, would you call that an airball?

I think you're looking at it backward. To me, an airball by definition is a shot that misses everything. A pass that misses everything is neither a shot nor an airball.

At some point there might be a question of whether the player was intending to shoot or pass. But usually it isn't hard to tell.

This B10 game is pretty fun.

Feels like a sweet 16 game. High level play and shot making.

Also a recipe for how these teams will lose.  Neither is good at getting multiple stops

Neither team is good defensively but that was a high level game.
