I am very sensitive to poison ivy. I was down wind from a burning field and broke out just by exposure to the smoke. My son-in-law can wallow in the stuff and not break out.

Here is an article showing the many forms of the plant.

it's an allergy-some are more sensitized than others.  some can come in to contact without symptoms multiple times and then suddenly become sensitized.  usually it gets worse each time.

i had a patient whom we had to premed with penicillin before most of her dental procedures.  after 20 years of this, she walks in to my office with a rash and the beginning of labored breathing-where did this come from??  same with bee sstings, etc etc

I have had poison Ivy twice, and both times I had a very bad case.

The fist time was when I was about ten, a couple of friends and I went up in the woods to smoke.  We were wearing shorts, and sat right in it.  I had about 60% coverage from my waist to my ankles (yes, there too).  That may have been my last smoke.

Then when my oldest kids were young, I was putting in a swing set.  Our lot backed up to woods, which had encroached about 10 feet into our yard.  It was the only flat location, so I whacked back the brush wearing a tank top, and the brush included poison ivy.  That time, I had it from elbow to elbow across my back and chest.

Luckily, I have to touch it to have a reaction.  I know a couple folks who breakout if the are near it on a windy day.

When I was a kid, I once got a rash on my face so bad, my eyes swelled shut. It was even inside my nose.  I had no clue what it was.

The hospital diagnosed it as poison ivy.  I had recently been in the woods behind a friend's house for an hour or two, but didn't remember my face coming in contact with anything there.

Still don't know how I got it.
Have some patience, FFS.

Never broken out from poison ivy but have definitely come in contact with it. Always assumed I was immune.

Poison ivy, if allergic to it, is the worst when coming into contact thru smoke.  Burning a fence line of tall grass with poison ivy within...medrol dose pak is a wonder drug.

And yes Archie, I've had it down there too and nothing worse, especially during puberty, eyn'a? 😳😉

Me too.

I don't know for a fact that I am immune -- it's not like I search it out and roll around in it or eat it, but I've never had a rash from it. Back in my Boy Scout days, there were camping trips that saw just about everybody except me get poison ivy rashes.

I always have attributed it to me having the strength of 10 men.

85% are allergic.  Same genetic form as poison oak.  1.5 Scoopers out of 10 are rash resistant.  Don't go bare assin' out there, people!

I get 3rd degree burn looking blisters.  It looks awful, but it was absolutely not painful or itchy.  It wept for a week or two before I got some 4 day steroids from the urgent care.  Funniest part about the urgent care is that the nurse was POSITIVE that poison ivy was contagious.  I had a good laugh at that.

You need the poison ivy spray and use it liberally anywhere you see in your yard or near your yard.
Poison ivy is a scourge.
