What have we become????

Grown @$$ men and women are arguing the merits of an eighth grader's bball ability in a public forum. Some of these "adults" seem to think it's appropriate to disparage the kid publicly.

Just let that sink in for a minute.

Ah the collective recruiting wisdom of Scoop. Worth less than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest

You mean a man with more legs than this guy, who happened to do okay in "an ass kicking contest" or two in his life?

Spotcheck Billy

I remember a 1-legged man winning the dance contest before a midnite showing of Rocky Horror at the Oriental back in 1979

Disparage?  It's called critiquing one's potential at a higher level.  No one is making personal attacks on the kid.  What bothers me is when people cannot handle critical thinking.  This world isn't made of Teddy Bears and Rainbows.  There's a harsh reality out there, called "competition".   That is the bane of athletics.  When a person comes and proclaims this kid to be "possibly best ever Wisconsin player" I'm going to unleash a barrage of opinion to disprove the acclamation, especially when the video shows the kid playing against weak competition.

Now...... who just sunk your battleship?

This kid is SMALL and SLOW. I wanna see him against better competition.  He DOESNT stand out. Better competition would take his lunch and eat it too!

Generally agree with a lot of your takes ATK - think you miss the mark on this one though - only caveat being if* he has gone through puberty early/developmemtally advanced well beyond most his age..and doesn't grow to be 5'11'+  Plays with great rhythm, has great handle, great vision..and seems to take a lot of kids off the bounce in that video that appear to be traveling teams/elite for age teams...

Possibly best ever Wisconsin player? Who said that? So you can tell that the competition was weak in that short sample size? Wow, that's impressive   ::)

Dude, go check your definition of critical thinking. Nothing in this thread is critical thinking.

We can debate the meaning of the word disparage, but just answer the following question? Would you take kindly to an adult you've never met publicly saying that your child in eighth grade, "better enjoy his 15 minutes of fame because once he get in high school hes gonna get gobbled up and spit out."?

That's disparaging and inappropriate in my opinion.

Slagging 8th graders = irredeemably dumb=making my MU diploma worth a little less.

There's nothing wrong with a little competitive sports talk now.  Man up!  Can't handle a little trash talk?  Does it make you fee uncomfortable?  Awww......    No one is saying it to this kid's face, nor are they disrespecting him.  It's a remark directed at the "pro Jordan camp" that has crowned him a division I player while playing against subpar competition.

So you won't answer my question and you think it's okay because nobody is saying it to his face. Sad, but predictable unfortunately.

Just because someone thinks he'll be gobbled up and spit out doesn't mean it's meant in a disparaging way.  The comment is directed at the supporter of Jordan and meant as banter.  It comes as no surprise though, that someone with thin skin would take offense to this.  Some people just don't understand the competitive spirit.  These are the ones who are in favor of policing trash talk in games.  This policing takes the competitiveness and emotion out of sports.

Dude, you don't know me in the slightest, and if you did, you'd find your own comments about competitive spirit and thin skin ridiculous. So you can think what you want, but not wanting other adults to speak ill of an eighth grader in a public forum isn't weakness.

Also, I think your understanding of the word disparage is almost as off as your definition of critical thinking.

Absolutely 100% correct.

So MikeDeane thinks "manning up" makes it OK for him to make fun of a Junior High kid? I could write a long rant here - but it really isn't necessary. Everyone can plainly see where he is coming from.

You continue to misinterpret the context.  No one is making fun of the kid.  The comments are directed at the poster's notion that this kid is the next great thing.  Easy there Turbo.

Sorry, but you are wrong. "The kid better enjoy his 15 minutes of fame because once he get in high school he's gonna get gobbled up and spit out." I don't care who this comment is directed at, it's still a disparaging comment about the kid.

If another poster claims that MikeDeanesDarkGlasses is the best poster on MUScoop, and I respond by saying the poster is wrong because Deane is actually an ignorant @$$ clown, I'm still making a disparaging comment about you.

First off, If you're going to insult me in the 3rd person, at least use proper punctuation.  Thank you.

Secondly, the argument is about whether or not the kid will be good enough for Division I.  One guy says he's great, blah, blah.......  The other says he should enjoy his 15 min of fame, because he'll be gobbled up and spit out - he's not that good.  Did he address the statement as ...... Jordan, enjoy your fame .......  NO!  He did not.  The comments were directed at the poster who thinks Jordan is going to be something special.  If you want the comments to be directed at Jordan - so be it.  It's just amazing to me how overly sensitive you are being.  Hey Bartender......  I'll have an  MUSF Light.

Just curious... where is the improper punctuation?  Also, just to be clear, he insulted you in both the second and third person.
