Character revealed

Two things I saw in the Chicago Tribune today that I really liked, both about taking responsibility and not making excuses.

The first was Buzz's comment after the game about taking responsibility for the loss and not making excuses: "Anytime I get beat I say I get beat, I think that's part of the problem in our industry if you got beat say you got beat.  Don't come up with a litany of excuses and and why it didn't work.  They beat us from start to finish....They beat us, and I mean that not sarcastically but as sincerely as I can possibly say."

Second was Jimmy Butler's comment after missing two late free throws yesterday: "I don't care what anybody says. That's the reason we lost this game," Butler said. "I couldn't care less what my teammates say. I know better. This one is on me without a doubt. And that's that."

Both of these comments really reveal the character of Buzz and the character that he tries to instill in his players.  Although I would have loved to see MU win yesterday, and Jimmy make his free throws, I am really proud that Buzz is the head coach at Marquette and that he instills values in players that help turn those players into great people like JFB.

As was pointed out in the press conference thread, this seemed to be at least indirectly aimed at Laranaga

As it should have been. That was weak of Larranaga after getting his ass handed to him and being thoroughly outcoached.

I don't think there was anything indirect about it.

That's why I said at least.  I agree it could be interpreted as pretty direct.

Agree, character revealed.  This is why I love Buzz's candor.  He's right.  Just as when he said we were lucky to beat Davidson, he was being honest and right.  Yet apparently then, it was only "coach speak"....lol.  People here are incredible sometimes.

Good for you Buzz.  Keep it going. I, for one, believe what you are saying and don't think there is any coach speak at all.  I love your candor!

like this a lot
"Half a billion we used to do about every two months...or as my old boss would say, 'you're on the hook for $8 million a day come hell or high water-.    Never missed in 6 years." - Chico apropos of nothing

You guys have got to take it easy on Larranaga - the goddam bus had to go on NINE different streets in only a mile and a half, for God's sake!

You don't get it. Buzz can say Vander sucks or we peed ourselves or we were lucky. He's the coach, and he earns that right every day. You don't and never will. Maybe if you meet him sometime you can introduce yourself as as CBB, author of "Choking Dogs Pee Themselves". I'm sure a thank you for your candor over the past 5 years will be the farthest thing from his mind.

I share your appreciation for Buzz and his candid approach to taking responsibility. So very different from his predecessor. Refreshing.

Someone should have asked "If it was that miserable, why didn't you just get out and walk the mile and a half?"  Hope we get matched up with what's left of them in the Anaheim Classic for another beatdown.

Good post.  When you get your arse handed to you, just take your medicine and give the other team their due.  For the opposite, see Crean and the "blowby" handshake which he's made famous... in this tourney I thought Stevens was a gracious loser, given the toughness of that loss...
