I'm reserving judgment until WISN 12 gets Derrick Wendler's take on all this.

Hilarious!

I live in a small town in Wisconsin.  There are Badger apologists everywhere.  However, after UW dispatched of Montana the bulk of the crowd began root for MU as they finished off BYU.

I remember the game against Pitt in the Dome.  The Badgers had just lost to Kentucky and their fans stayed and cheered for MU.

They don't like our team like we don't like their team, but seriously?  That is a lot of effort for nothing.

This, to me, is an embellished story.  I was there and some did stay and cheer.  A large number left.  Most sat on their hands.

I think you've nailed it.

Some Badger fans will root for MU. Some don't really care (left), Some don't really care (sat on hands), and a small amount rooted against MU.

Let's not pretend like there is a HUGE contingent of Wisco residents who hate MU. There just isn't.

I think you've read too much badgermaniac and such. Seriously, go out to a local sports bar when the MU game is on. There aren't crowds of people rooting against them. I guess that's the best "evidence" I can offer. The real world. Not dorks on the internet or calling into sports radio*. That is a TINY sample.

No, the game just isn't on a lot of the time.

There's a WI bar in Denver (Swanky's) that is just covered in Brewers, Badgers and Packers stuff. When I first moved here 2 years ago, I went in and asked if they played the Marquette games, too. The owner looked at me, saw my Marquette shirt and said, "No." Then walked away and refused to serve me the rest of the night.

There's Wisconsin and then there's Marquette. Marquette does not get lumped into the rest of sports teams in/from Wisconsin. It's fine when WI alumni are anti-Marquette. I expect it. The last thing I would ever consider myself is anything less than apathetic toward the Badgers. For the vast majority of the time, I actively wish the worst for all of their teams in every game they play.

But apart from the alumni, it's all the poseurs that annoy the ever-living sh1t out of me. Especially when THOSE toolboxes say negative stuff about MU.

And I swear, people that say "WINsconsin" should all get paper cuts on their tongues.

The funny thing is, all the UW alumni I know are respectful and there's good natured banter.

It's the people who didn't go to college, or who went to UW-Bumblefuck that are the most obnoxious.

Goose

Only pre UW being great school alum care or hate MU. Anyone there in past 20 years could care less about MU ball or the school. Angry guys like Hunt and others that were there when the school sucked resent MU and it's grads. If you polled the UW student body today MU would not be on radar screen of rivals.

I completely agree with that.

One of my buddies went to NC State for 2 years and then transferred to WI. He's equal parts NCSU/UW fans and gives me and the rest of our MU alumni friends crap all the time, but he actually likes Marquette. He's also laid out how the student body does NOT consider MU a rival at all whereas I would said the majority of MU students/alumni definitely do.

This is true. I highly doubt 95% of wisconsin sports fans root against marquette as suggested by merritsmustache, My guess is, in milwaukee area the fan base is close to 50%mu 50% Uw and a good percentage root for both. i do not understand the elitist attitude of some Marquette fans that think only the small core of alumuni are fans of the team. I am pretty sure it is more than that

There are other factors involved in the media bias against Marquette than just UW fans "trying to screw over MU" . Private school bias, Catholic school bias, Inner city bias, arrogance of fans bias.
The more Marquette fans bitch about the reporting, the more the reporters are going to be negative. If it is a non story it will be a non story to most people.

Actually, I said a "majority of people in Wisconsin don't like Marquette and enjoy cheering against Marquette." A majority is simply more than half. I never said 95%. You might have gotten that number from Ners original post.

ok my bad.

I still think a majority is too high. There is a certain segment that hates eveything MU but I think sultan got it right it is more indifference and not hate

Montana Warrior nailed it.

And just 'cause I'm paranoid doesn't mean everyone isn't talking about me....

Really?  Timing is interesting.  Screw the media, let's win on Thursday and shut them all up....
"I went into a restaurant one night and ordered lobster, and the waiter brought me one with a claw missing. He told me that in the back there's a tank they keep the lobsters in and while they're in there, they fight and sometimes one loses a claw. I told him to bring me a winner."  Al McGuire

Few Things:

#1 You're right, MU isn't part of the "Wisconsin Sports Scene" like the Packers, Brewers, Badgers and Bucks. I would NEVER say that MU is even close. It's not. My point is that I don't think there is a huge portion of the Wisco population that is actively rooting against or attempting to ruin Marquette.

#2 The guy in Denver is running a business, and if there isnt a demand for MU games, he's not going to show them. That doesn't mean people are "anti-marquette". It just means they aren't really interested. Shocking. I bet they don't show UWM games there either.

#3 And yes, the non-UW alumni are the most annoying. I usually diffuse people by asking them (politely) what year they graduated. It usually calms down the "UW RULES" attitude when they say (Insert School here) and I respond "Oh yea, I heard they have a good womens track team".

I will not go as far as to say there is a conspiracy or MU bias, but I do believe their is a private school bias.  I also believe that plays into some of this.

As for the story, IMHO, it was manufactered by the JS.  The timing of the tickets is very interesting.  I believe the JS pushed hard to get something here.  There were no tickets issued for 6 weeks.  Hmmmm ...

That said, Don Walker is a MU alum and basketball fan.  I know he attends many games and believe he has season tickets.

Walker, being an alum, makes it even worse---why would he print the story now??  He had to have known the timing was bad.  Why print it at all??  He couldn't wait until the season is officially over??

As a Marquette fan who has never lived in Wisconsin aside from the years I went there, I consider the Badgers to be a major rival of Marquette for exactly one night every year.  Aside from that, I am more interested in how we play against Lousiville, Notre Dame, Cincy, Georgetown, 'Nova, etc.  My guess is that most UW fans feel about the same.  I would also say that on the east coast, Marquette is just as well known and recognized as U-W, if not more.

I was in a bar watching the BYU game and there were a few Wisc fans there watching them play Montana.  They either didn't care at all about the Marquette game, or watched it during commercials and gave an occasional nod or clap in favor of Marq.  They more we win, the more people will have an opinion of the program, for better or worse.  It comes with success.
