Buzz's Demeanor

Maybe someone can answer this.  After watching various coaches, each are different when it comes to what their demeanor/actions are after a poor play.  Seeing Coach B. yesterday just give that WTF look, then discussion with Fab Melo after that elbow was interesting and got me to thinking about Buzz.

Some coaches yell, get in their face and are tyrannical in nature.  Some make facial expressions that just kill you. Buzz does not do that and you never see him even talking to them after they did something wrong.  He just pulls them and sends them to the bench, letting the assistant coaches talk (which may be their role). Then goes back to managing the game.

So, does anyone know what he is like at halftime, out of sight of TV?

The focus is a good point.  There was a point in the game where a Cuse player missed a FT, and they showed Jim Boeheim ripping him even before he even shot the second FT.  Yelling something along the lines of "Come on! Let's go!" all angry.  Didn't really see the point of riding a guy for missing his first FT.  Isn't that just getting him more razzled for the second?

If you watched that expose on Buzz last year you would have seen quite a yeller in practice.  I have a feeling it gets pretty ugly at half time.  But you are right, he seems to make only a few non-heated comments during the game when a player comes to the bench.

All that matters is wins. Bobby Knight was one of the biggest yellers and he has over 900 wins. Brian Kelly has won championships. I don't care what he does on the sidelines.

What I have seen is that during the game action, Buzz lets the Assistants handle that.  During play stoppage or a Time Out, he definitely is visible talking to the guys.  Sometimes he roams down the bench to say something.

To be fair, though, you are comparing a situation that Buzz has not been faced with to date.

Yeah, to my knowledge, Brian Kelly hasn't won S***, unless you count getting HOUSED by Florida in the Sugar Bowl "winning" a "championship".

I believe he won a couple of D2 Championships.

Thanks - when should something like that drop off your resume? If Buzz won two high school championships I don't know that I'd be touting it as evidence of his coaching genius.

D2 isn't anything to sneer at, but it's not at all on the same level as D1 football at Cincy/ND.

Out of curiosity, I looked up his record.  He coached 13 years at Grand Valley, winning his conference six times and two national titles.  Buzz doesn't have anything of that caliber on his resume.

The point is that there are coaches that go bonkers on the sidelines (in any sport) that have seen success in motivating and teaching 18-22 year old men to play at a high level. My point is that I don't care because people have proven there is more than one way to skin a cat. Just win. Thats all I care about (for the most part).

I've heard him drop some pretty tough crap on the kids down the tunnel at halftime. It's what you'd expect. His demeanor is good for a young coach. Especially when he skies high for the timeout signal.

Then again, a lot here think criticism is trashing so it could be a fine line for some.

This is true, but then again GVSU has the enrollment and resources to be a respectable DI FCS institution - their annual athletic budget is about double the median DII budget. I'm sure Kelly was partly responsible for raising them to that level, but it's a pretty incredible program.
