This and student night at the German Beer Hall were both fun and trouble for me and my kin.

Its too bad OGBH has gone downhill too. Ownership change and huge turnover in beer wenches causes me to take my business elsewhere (plus 9 out of 10 times the live music sucks unless my friends get to play). That is a Huge reason why Caffs and Murphs suck and I go to other places: The rapport with the bartenders. I never got that at the MU bars even if those guys lived on my floor or drank with me or gave me free beer during slow times. When business picked up it was a free for all. MUBurrow hit the other problems with the bars right on the head

Cool bartenders is why love the brat house now (right next door or OGBH) Daz and Tink are awesome and they let me bounce too. Same with trinity, I have a few people there that go out of their way to serve me before other people because they know me -even at peak times. But thats also a product of how talkative the people are there. They're nice, friendly/laugh put up with my douchebaggery and come ons. I only got that vibe at Murphs ONCE. During the downtime when the post basketball crowd cleared out (passed out) before they came back at night. But coming back later that night and over the next weeks, I never got that treatment from those servers ever again.

Too bad Durango closed too btw. Food was good but tried to hard to be a sit down restaurant before 9pm and never caught on as a bar after that. Guys that ran it were nice, but they'd never card.

Now, about the girls. You do know girls exist outside of the MU campus, right? In fact, the girls downtown put the girls at caffs/murphs to shame. Try getting out of the campus bubble sometime, and you might bring home a girl that really makes your roommates jealous.

For a guy with little game, it is harder to bring back a girl to your shitty campus apartment picking up girls downtown. A lot easier to convince someone to come up for a drink when you live a block away.

On another note, my good-old-days bar is closing. As in good old days, I'm talking the summers of '08 and '09. Bootleggers is closing this month.  :( Horrible bar on the weekend but I would go there basically every week night for ridiculous specials. A group of 15 of us would go down for $1 burgers and not leave til like midnight chilling on the patio.

Agreed.

(insert bar name) is crappy because I don't get special treatment and my friend's band isn't playing.

I can't believe (insert bar name) is still in business.

With all this talk about prices -- what kind of prices now exist at Caff's and Murphs? (Since it's a monopoly I should just ask what is the uniform price of both.) What's a bottle of Miller Lite? Or a pint? What is a pitcher?

I haven't lived on campus in 26 months so I am not familiar with the prices.

I still remember being annoyed when a pint went from $2.00 to $2.50.

The Friday night "special" is a $3 PBR tallboy

Caffrey's was the sh!t til thayt awful remodel. Boots of beer on the back porch when it's nice out was the definition of fun. The DJ booth and discontinuation of boots ruined it.

Lets not over-generalize.

I could have built that rapport with bartenders at virtually any bar where I thought the servers were nice enough for me to come back and I talked more to those serves and became friendly with them. That brings me back to the bar. that never happened caffs or murphs no matter how often I went, which is why I don't (didn't) go there. I want to go to places where I have fun. Fighting with everyone else to catch a bartenders attention isn't my idea of fun. Getting beer from people I like is.

my friends playing at OGBH is a bit different than your average bar cover band. they play authentic German music (not exactly my thing, but they're my friends) and I go and listen to them. OGBH kind of has the market cornered there. However the other guys that play there really suck. One of the guys plays off an ipod connected to his keyboard.

Here is my shameless plug for their band. http://www.blaskapelle-milwaukee.com/index.html I used to play it in, and there are some pictures of me playing.

Thursday night at Lucille's... before the renovation. Those were the days.

Been in the place twice in three years since. The renovation killed the charm/character of the place.

I'll agree with Ari on the Brat House, fair prices, nice people, and music that doesn't suck. Great spot post-MU games. It's about the only place on Third St. I'll go to now.

It really is remarkable how Lucille's went from a top place for MU students before the renovation to a ghost town after it. Complete turn. Is Lucille's even open anymore?

Fair enough.

I'm just giving you the business because your original post came off pretty douchey.

You're a consumer, and you can chose any bar you like.

That's too bad.

The on-campus bars used to have a cool college corner bar feel back in 00-03.

In fact, these were the days before everybody had a cell phone (gasp), so Murphs, Heg's, Gym Bar/Caff's all ended up being gathering places for people to meet up.

We'd hit house parties, or go downtown, but ultimately end up at a campus bar to catch up with the rest of our friends.

Also, it was nice to just stop for a pint/mug after studying. You didn't have to be dressed up, you could just stop in. It was about seeing who was around as much as it was about the bar itself.

Maybe twitter, four square, and facebook have changed this type of neighborhood bar type of thing. You can just check your phone and see where everybody is. You don't need to have a "meet-up" type of bar anymore.

Well, this is what I think as well.  I guess you, me and BMA are just old farts now :(

yes it is...

and students still go there...my sister graduated last year and dragged me along for her birthday...but the place was probably only halfway full. I'm guessing they get their specials and move on. A far cry from the amazing time people had when the pianos were by the window.

Driking in Angelo's was only done by underagers, but damn it... they can make a great pizza.

Are you kidding me. That pizza was only good after six pitchers of beer. You ate it to sop up the booze!

If your a woman in your LATE 30s - mid 40s and you're the last one of your friends to get married, I think Lucille's is the place you go for your bachelorette party since most of the other girls are drunk after 3 drinks and still think belting out Journey on piano is cool. Plus the party (and the bar) will be dead by 11:30 since most of the girls friends have to play the baby sitter extra if they stay past midnight.

Yep. We're the old dudes.

It's too bad if the campus bars are really that bad now. ("bad" is relative term I guess).

Maybe that opens up an opportunity for another more "corner bar" style place to open, but MU is a very seasonal neighborhood, and convincing MU to let another bar open is going to be a tough sell.

Maybe the old anglelos space could be a cool place. If they take out the kitchen, it would be a pretty big.

Anybody want to invest in "WARRIOR BAR"? (alumni over 35 just got wood  :P)

ZiggysFryBoy

it's too bad the murfs/caffs bartenders suck now.  back in my day, knowing Jim, Molly, Molly's sister, etc was golden.  buy one, get 3 free on tall captain n cokes, don't mind if I do!

Shoot, I could have told you that.  Few weeks ago I was hanging out with my nephew who's a sophomore in college(not at MU), trying to explain the drinking games that we used to play, and at one point one of his friends turns to another and says, "okay, who brought the old dude".
