You missed National nickname day.

Tuesday, Sept. 27, is National Nickname Day which, unless your nickname is Cliff Clavin or Gandalf, you probably did not know. It is a propitious time to discuss the two immutable rules when it comes to nicknames. First, you cannot nickname yourself, no matter how badly you want to. The temptation to name yourself can be strong, but as surely as you haven't heard the end of things when you fall into a koi pond around teenagers, it is not appropriate. Only your good mates who know you well can do that. Second, when your boon companions do issue you a handle, it won't highlight your greatest virtue; it never does. Nonetheless, it's yours to keep without remonstrance. It will not celebrate your lowest vice, either. Most likely, it will fall somewhere in between.

J Dub with a few people in HS.  But once I got to HS it was Wags, as you can surmise.  But then it became pretty ingrained. 

At one point in my 20s, I think the only people that called me my given name, male or female, were my family or the girl I was dating at the time.  My manager once heard a friend call me Wags at a happy hour and he pretty much called me Wags exclusively at work unless we were in front of upper management, which caught on with a few others.
