The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

No impact on enrollment at all.

It was when I was there.   Students getting murdered in front of the florist across from Mashuda.  Armed robbery at the avalanche at midnight on a weekend.  Players getting busted for assaulting their girlfriend.   Sexual assault where the assailant came through the window of the downstairs apartment where I lived upstairs.    The armed mugging I broke up at the entry to the Mashuda parking lot.  Dahmer.

I watched drug deals from my 6th floor Mashuda window, knew of classmates being mugged, a girl was stuffed in the trunk of a car and kidnapped after being taken to multiple ATMs on campus and forced to take out maximum she could. Saying "yeah, well it's better than it was in my day" isn't a selling point, especially when information is so much more easily attainable to the parents of prospective students and competition for students is higher.

Don't put words in my mouth.   I never said it was better.  I said that crime near campus existed when I was there in the 80's and cited examples.    You essentially agreed and cited your own examples.

This crap isn't new.   i want people to stop pretending it is and something new to fear. The Jesuits have always espoused being part of the world, engaging with it, and trying to make it better.

This is an opportunity.
