Is anyone in a 17 year Cicada state and have they emerged yet?  Maybe it's me but I think they're extremely cool.  Their cycles are a defense mechanism.  They're totally harmless....apparently dogs, squirrels, and birds are chomping on them in some areas.  If you have a dog in a cicada area I would monitor their gorging.

We're in DC for my daughter's graduation and they are here. On campus yesterday we saw lots of the molted shells, but not too many of the insects.

If I recall, these little fellows bury themselves underground for 17 years, then emerge desperately seeking a partner to have sex with; have sex one time only; and then die.

Sounds eerily similar to my high school, college and post-college years.

LOL.  They've been around 50-200 million years.  Clearly their strategy seems to be working.

It truly is....amazing creatures.  It's supposedly the males that whine constantly.  The question is will there be the numbers they're talking about?  I thought I read Trillion with a T.

How does this differ from males who want to mate in any other species?
Have some patience, FFS.

The cicadas are coming?   I didn't even notice them breathing hard.
