I live at 932 N 18th my junior year (just south of Lenny's Tap on 18th and State. Gray house, red door. There were three newer brick apartments just east of us across an alley on Kilbourn. We're you in the northernmost of those?

I do believe we shared the same home. I was at 932 N. 18th my senior year.
The year before, I lived in the house on the north side of the apartments next door.
When I lived there, there was an alley separating the home from the tavern, which then was frequented by people from the neighborhood, i.e. not students. Anyhow, one night a fight from the bar spilled into the alleyway, shots were fired and a guy, fortunately with just a leg wound, ended up bleeding in our yard until an ambulance arrived.

Again, two cops were just murdered at Bridgewater College in a small Virginia college town that has been described as "bucolic."

It sucks, but stuff happens everywhere.

Or we can blame that one on crime near the Marquette campus, too. (But absolutely NOT on the proliferation of guns. Never that!)
