Dr. Blackheart

The fun suckers seem to be dominating the board recap. Yeah, we were not very good offensively but I find it hard to believe some think this isn't worth celebrating. Half empty I guess.

Here are some half full observations.

  • Played two very good halves of defense. Def Eff of 0.85 to keep MU in the game despite the cold hand on offense. Defense won this game with Cain's strong hand. How about that?
  • Garcia with 13 boards. GT went right at Theo to get him in foul trouble and to keep MU out of the paint early. Dawson and Lewis stepped up.
  • Halftime adjustment to get the ball in the paint with Theo in foul trouble and our cold hand. MU won PIP+FTM 46-38, which skewed heavily to the 2nd half
  • 11 steals by MU, winning points off turnovers 19-11. Yeah, the Hoyas have a short bench which makes them tire out, but Wojo kept running different defenses out there (man, 3-2 zone, two different press schemes) and rotations to find that energy. The line-up that made the run was not intuitive.  Wojo had a very good in-game adjustment day to get MU back in despite his detractors.
  • Senior play. Good teams need seniors to step up. Cain did yesterday and that Koby hustle play was one for the books. Greg with four steals (grade senior). This was a butcher, the baker and candlestick maker effort.

The Koby play was reminiscent of DK Metcalf catching the DB on the interception. If you watch the replay, you think there's zero chance Koby can get to the rim first from where he starts.

I liked the Dawson/Lewis lineup as it gives versatility more than Theo. Especially with a center like Wahab on the floor.

Coming back with three starters on the bench.

Showing more heart than the fun suckers.

Winning a conference road game without playing their A game.

No such thing as a bad road win in conference play, period.

Agreed. And Sy Torrence didn't have a great game, but that run came with him at the point. He did a good job of pushing the up court and looking to pass. Not rocket science, but it was more effective than what carton was doing running the point.

Thanks Doc.  Always appreciate your numbers.

And Wojo went back to Carton at the end of the game just in the nick of time.  Left handed layup and the key assist to Cain for the three to put the game away.

Good thread, Dr. B. Thanks for starting it.

I expected Marquette's players to not quit, because we've seen their determination in earlier games. But when you've made a couple of little runs and you're STILL down by 15 with under 10 minutes to go - in other words, you've only cut 1 point off the halftime lead even though you've played better - it can be discouraging.

So I give big props to the guys for still fighting and to the coaching staff for keeping them going.

I also have to give a huge thumbs-up to Wojo for sticking with a lineup that was getting the job done. I admit that I was telling Wojo (through the TV) to get DJ back in about 3 minutes earlier than he did. As it turns out, Wojo waited until just the right time. And big-time kudos to DJ for making an immediate impact with the bucket and then the pass to Jamal.

Unless you're St. John's, DePaul, or Butler, everyone is.

Ewing is 20-39 vs. Big East schools. Thirteen of those 20 wins have come from the three schools above.

I don't recall Dawson getting any of his shots blocked this game even with Wahab waiting in the paint.

It was nice to see Justin in the second half get the ball at the top of the key, mostly unguarded, and head for the basket as opposed to taking another three.

Both freshmen may have learned the benefit of the inside game and hopefully will stop chucking threes every time they're open and head for the basket.

DJ making that floater to give us the lead after a poor shooting game to that point (and he got whacked on the arm to boot).

Jamal taking over.

A successful alley-oop!
