Poll added.

Crazy that 55% of people just ignore this.   (Sure, a big chunk never got the form, accounts for maybe a quarter of that.)

warriorchick

Living between Wisconsin and Illinois right now, decided to fill it out for Wisconsin.
Have some patience, FFS.

My white ass is counted.

But what kind of white ass did you say you were?  I thought being asked to drill down more was a little odd.

I am, among other breeds, a Luxembourger and a Liechtensteinian.  That was fun to spell out for me and 3 kids.

I live in New Jersey; have not received the form yet.

I did mine last week.
The questions the way they were laid out was just bizarre.

Yeah, I find the ethnic background questions to be rather dated.  I mean sure, I have a German background...because my ancestors emmigrated from there over 100 years ago.  Why that is relevant in 2020 is beyond me.  And, according to the DNA tests my parents took last year, that's likely just where they stepped on the boat.

Agreed.
I was filling out ethnic background on my kids which was simpler only because my wife is a Polish immigrant.  My background is varied.
I was thinking at how convoluted most people must be filling out their kids since husband and wife most likely have a varied background.

I recall reading a story and I can't remember if it was after the 2000 or 2010 census and it listed the majority ethnic background by state.  Most were "English" or "German" except for the Northeast USA which was "Italian" or "Irish".
One state, Kentucky, listed "American".
Honestly in 2020, that almost sounds pretty accurate.

Agreed, the heritage question is nonsense in 2020.   Most citizens would have 3-5+ ethnicities, making the data silly.

I like extra census questions, though.  Imagine a database on which is better, Arby's sauce, or Horsey sauce.

I am German, Czech, French, and English.

My wife is German and Polish.

My daughter is German, Polish, Czech, French and English.

What is the point of these questions?

My father was adopted and really knows virtually nothing about his background.  So I listed "unknown" as half of my background, and as 1/4 of my daughter's background.

Even though all my kids were at my house on 4/1, I followed the instructions and didn't count my two college students or my son who lives in SLC but is riding out the coronavirus storm with us.  I assume they'll get counted appropriately at other locations.

Past second generation you're American it's ridiculous to start breaking down every ethnicity in your family background. What if you're French Canadian? Do you write that you're French by way of Canada?

I am part French-Canadian and I so wrote Italian, Polish & French-Canadian.
