Chet Coppock sues Allstate Arena attacker
Claims medical problems, now seeks attorney's fees

By Teddy Greenstein

Tribune reporter

9:23 PM CST, February 15, 2008

Chet Coppock, the sports-radio talk-show host who got a black eye after an attack outside Allstate Arena a year ago, is fighting back in court.

Coppock has filed a civil suit in Cook County against the assailant, Jaime Waldron of Milwaukee, plus five other parties, including Allstate Arena, Aramark Sports and the Village of Rosemont.

In March, Waldron was found guilty of having attacked Coppock after the Marquette-De Paul basketball game Feb. 14, 2007, but he received no jail time. Waldron was sentenced to 40 hours of community service, one year of probation and $140 in court costs.

After the sentencing, Coppock vowed to make Waldron "pay attorney's fees until he drops," and Coppock has followed through on that vow.

"What Waldron did was cowardly, totally unprovoked," Coppock said Friday. "I still recall him laughing while I sat in an ambulance. If he thinks this is a game, he's in for a rude awakening."

Since the attack, Coppock said, he has suffered from nightmares, severe headaches and bouts of depression.

Asked why his list of defendants also includes the arena, Aramark and Rosemont, Coppock directed that issue to his attorney, Loren B. Siegel. A representative from Siegel's office said he would not be able to return calls until next week.

Rosemont spokesman Gary Mack said the village "doesn't feel it's liable for any damages in this case."

Coppock said the attack was unprovoked and that Waldron had been drinking heavily and taunting De Paul fans during the game.

After Coppock left the arena with his girlfriend and began to enter his car, he said, the assailant punched him near his right eye. The gash required three stitches.

Waldron apparently was unfamiliar with Coppock, who is serving a suspension over an insensitive remark about Jews on the air. The weekend host is slated to return to WMVP-AM 1000 on Feb. 23.

Coppock suspended for anti-Semitic remark
February 9, 2008
FROM SUN-TIMES STAFF REPORTS
WMVP-AM (1000) confirmed Friday that longtime Chicago sports radio personality Chet Coppock has been suspended for five shifts for making an anti-Semitic comment on the air.

During his show last Saturday, Coppock was asked, ''How do you spell 'Jewish'?'' and replied, ''M-O-N-E-Y.'' General manager Jim Pastor suspended Coppock from Sunday's show, as well as his next four weekend shifts. He'll return to the air Feb. 23.

''I made an offensive comment I truly regret,'' Coppock said in a statement. ''It doesn't reflect my views or those of WMVP. I sincerely apologize.''

Pastor said the station did not receive many complaints but acted immediately anyway. The Chicago-based Anti-Defamation League issued a statement Friday applauding WMVP for its ''expedient response.''

Coppock has had a checkered recent past that includes a suspension last spring for dropping his pants in the presence of a female employee and an incident last February in which a Marquette basketball fan punched him outside Allstate Arena after a DePaul game.

RIP chet coppock.  Dead at age 70, car accident.  Sports radio legend.

Good and bad, Chet was an icon in forming the sports radio industry. He certainly had his faults, no question, but as a kid, I would listen to his show on the old WLUP AM. As a WWF fan growing up, I always thought it was so cool that he'd have the Macho Man or whoever on.

He was way ahead of his time in creating and seeing what sports radio could be, no doubt a legend in that regard, RIP.

He once said he believed Will Ferrell's Ron Burgundy character in the "Anchorman" movies was based on him.

It happened outside Bluffton SC on April 6.

A Hammond, Indiana, woman was driving the 2004 Lexus that Coppock was a passenger in when the crash occurred, S.C. Highway Patrol spokesperson Lance Cpl. Matt Southern said Thursday.

The woman was driving southbound on S.C. 170 near Tidewatch Drive at 1:04 p.m. when her car crossed the median and struck a 2018 Land Rover traveling in the opposite direction, Southern said. The Land Rover then stuck a 2019 Chevrolet two-door traveling in the same direction.

Both the driver of the Land Rover and the driver of the Chevrolet are Bluffton residents.

Coppock, all three drivers and one additional passenger who was in the Chevrolet were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries. All were reported to be wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Coppock died from his injuries a week and a half later.

Southern said the collision is still under investigation.

Chet's greatest contribution to the entertainment industry was being half of the inspiration for Bruce Wolf's hilarious "Chet Chitchat" (the other half was Chuck Swirsky), who hosted "The Lobotomy Line on Sports".

He didn't mind that he was mostly a caricature of himself, though, and had a good sense of humor about his intentionally over the top self.

RIP
