I was at the game, I thought the crowd was fine.

A lot of the perspective on the crowd, I suspect, depends on where you sit. From my perspective opposite the student section, it seemed to me the students were pretty into the game. After the first couple minutes, the rest of the place is basically a morgue other than isolated moments. Every time I stood up expecting the whole section to be getting up as well for a key play or big possession, and before long I realized I was standing just about by myself and blocking everyone's view behind me.

The crowd and whole program is in a different stratosphere from the 87-91 era when I was there, so I won't do any of the back in my day stuff. That said, every year when I can get up to the BC games I am so jacked going in, and too often walk out disappointed that there is no buzz (aside from the coach) in that stadium. 3/4 of the crowd sits there as if they are watching the game on tv. It's too bad. MU has a good home court record over the years, but I suspect it has more to do with comfort level and the quality of our teams than any kind of home court advantage in terms of crowd. I don't mean to be as harsh as that probably sounds, but I suspect it is true.

As a final thought, we lost last night b/c Pitt outplayed us pretty handily despite the close score, and that had very little to do with the crowd.

Mike Deane's Seat Belt

crowd was fine

our team played like crap and that doesn't help to get the crowd into the game.  The crowd at duke, kansas, UK , whatever all gets taken out of the game at home when their team plays like garbage at home.

if i was a 70 year old alum w/season tickets and 2 hip replacements i would not be standing during that game either, cant blame all the old timers that have season tickets in the lower bowl,  we need them to fill up the BC, anyone would look good at camryn indoor with the setup they have and all the students in the front row on top of the court.

and that butler bad missed hack at the end of the game really didnt matter because he would have probably bricked both of the following free throws that night because we couldn't buy a shot...

im thinking we are NIT bound after that game , unfortunately ,

There's a lot of hyperbole above but there's also some truth.  I went to the bathroom (my seats are right at a bathroom) at the 1:30 mark and students were pouring out.  I finally just screamed at them and said you're all f'n idiots, you're only in college once, stick around for a comeback.

Our crowds rarely get on their feet, we need some DJ TC love (Cotton Eyed Joe) to get going.  Who the hell cares about a gold out, just tell everyone to stand occasionally.

Finally, you get your MU Viking types who love to brag about MU's rankings, endowments etc.  Well frankly I liked it better when it was a bunch of drunk Irish kids from the southside with 2.9's who came to get a decent education and have a good time at the 'Lanche.  I could care less about current app rates, current ACT scores, current donations (all #'s are inflated since every other school in America experienced huge growth too).  MU is an decent school and lets get back to educating good kids who like to have a good time.  They make for a better crowd.  We're not Northwestern.  Not off the court and thankfully on either.

WTF are you talking about?

Nice cliche rant.

You are now officially an "old guy". Great work.

Wear your pants above bellybutton today. You've earned it.

'02...any word if we set a State of Wisconsin Attendance record?
My handle is Schoolyard but I do my best work at Finley Dunnes...Joe Kenny in '08

I think last night's student section was probably the best it had been all year... we alumni need to pick it up more... I hate to admit it, but we are lame overall as a crowd!!

I counted everybody there. We came up 3 people short.

Those 3 nerds in the library need to close the books and hit the game instead.

I'll say it again, part of the "crowd problem" is that we are playing college basketball games in an arena built for an NHL team.

Big Papi

Are we really complaining about the crowd last night?  There was nothing wrong with the crowd last night.  There was a lot of fans wearing gold last night.  More than normal.  Will never get 100% participation no matter what.  The student section was good but not great but than again it was a weekday game.  The crowd was ready to bust out numerous times and was rocking whenever we had a run going or needed a stop or a bucket.  I saw fans on their feet more this game than a usual game.  Hard to get the place really rocking when (1) the other team is dunking the ball on us regularly (2) we can't make a shot when we really need it (3) the refs are not doing us any favors (4) there is no good rhythm to the game.

Credit Pitt for playing very good defense that didn't require a lot of help D, playing physical enough to not get fouls called on them yet get into Lazar's head and playing good enough offensively to get easy shots when they were not turning the ball over.

Agreed, but thank goodness we can drink beer at the games!!

for the first half i was sitting in 443 near the baseline, to the left of the student section. Moved one section towards the student section, and couldn't believe the noise difference. i thought the students were solid.

I go to marquette and get drunk at least 3-4 times a week and still manage to get good grades. It might be a better student section if we get a team that can matchup physically with other teams. We r boys playing men. Our best player, lazar, would b a role player on other teams. To put it simply, marquette is and always will be a middle of the pack big east team. I think everyone needs to stip blaming the students and rehashing your glorydays cuz kids in college are the same as they were back in your day.

The 'gold out' was an embarrassment. Saw tons of people there who I knew were MU alums....wearing green sweatshirts, black shirts, even (God forbid) RED shirts. What a joke. Gimme a break, is it that hard to wear a yellow shirt once a year?

The crowd stunk. I'm an alum, season tix in the lower bowl. Three times we started to make a run, I'm up standing and yelling....and got told to sit down. By OUR fans! I wanted to throw my kid's ice cream at them. NOBODY outside of the student section EVER stands unless it's the last 2 minutes of the game. Maybe. Even then it's halfhearted. It's so depressing.

It's almost like being at a Bucks game.

The students might need to borrow the "stand up old people" chant from the Badgers student section.  The students looked fine (though they do need to get them closer to the court).  But the lower bowl is basically a retirement home.  Don't buy the BC as the problem in this case...there are 70 year old geezers at Cameron that you're afraid are going to drop at any moment because they get so into the game.  That's the fan, not the venue.

Hey Vikings, I like what you've done with the basement.

"Lazar Hayward. The L stands for leader, and the W stands for winner, Lazar Hayward is a winner."

Doesn't Marquette have one of the top attendances in the country??? That is UNBELIEVABLE.  That should be appreciated......warts and all.....I understand wanting to be better,  but the crowd wasn't atypical.

Dr. Blackheart

The crowd was fine last night.  The students were there early and en masse.  Loved the Fuzz Williams sign.  The Gold Out was about 85% except the money seats which is what everyone saw on TV.  They weren't wearing blue or gold.

But, what was with 2600 empty blue seats disguised as Warrior fans?  If the MU AD wants to "Gold Out", they may want to try dressing in gold too.  It might be good to also hand out the Club Cambria and sponsor suites gold tees rather then blue.

Honestly, our schedule is killing the crowd jive this year.  The one thing you could say about the officials yesterday was they were consistent--with Pitt clutching and grabbing us to slow us down on every contested play.  Jimmy was backwoodsed about three times, and Zar had to enter a domestic abuse shelter today.  Nothing like killing a fan experience today with all the technology than have the BE not allow controversial replays to make these officials accountable (and I think most crews would be proven right almost all the time).  But, adding more technology to add energy to a crowd apparently is not a good thing.

In the end, it was Pitt's D yesterday that killed the mojo.
