Syracuse with a shocking early 8 point lead.

Cuse playing pretty well so far.

Tennessee in the early going looking like the offensively inconsistent Tennessee under Barnes.

Free throw shooting is gross for both teams so far.

Cuse doesn't look good to me. Making lots of tough shots while Tennessee is missing open ones and making unforced errors.

They clarified that the white line is the college 3pt line. The rims seem tight as the ball is really bouncing off the rims.

That might help us against UCLA and their bigs.

Syracuse stinks.

I assume they'll look better with Mintz, but they still aren't good.

Tennessee looks to have knocked off the rust.

I wouldn't say underrated.  Sometimes the #11 team can outplay #2.

Imagine a 3 seed beating a 1 seed in the Elite 8.

Gonzaga could have put this game away in the first half. They were up 30 to 21 with 5 mins to go and only scored 5 the rest of the way.

I don't hate the announcers, they're just really low energy. And i'm still jet lagged and it's putting me to sleep.

The refs are letting Purdue beat up on Gonzaga quite a bit.

Rebounding and hitting our threes will be the keys to the game.   UCLA has two 7 footers?   They are tough inside- could be fouls trouble for us - and block shots ... so we need our A game for sure and from multiple players.  Let's Gooo Marquette!

Am I the only one who thinks the black three point line is screwing some guys up? It seems like there are a number of shots where guys very specifically position themselves right behind the black line -- with some even shuffling their feet to make sure they are just behind the line. But in actuality, they're 1.5 inches behind the line.

No you are not. There were quite a few out of bounds calls on shooters in the corner. They were stepping back too far because they thought the black line was the 3 pt line.

To be honest, I don't recall this being an issue at all.  I do think that players are used to the further line being the men's college line, but I don't think it's that big of a deal.

I thought that the announcers said something about how they made this floor for the event. Why make a floor for the Maui Invitational that includes an NBA 3-pt line?

Maybe I misheard.

What's insane about the next two days is that no matter what 1 team ranked in the top 7 right now is going to lose two in a row. All four of these teams are vying for 1 seeds come selection Sunday. Having head to head wins over them would be massive for our 1 seed case.

I thought there was one year Paint Touches showed our 3 point shooting drastically reduced when there was multiple 3 point lines. I saw a few times it looked like our guys stepped behind the NBA line before shooting.

Imo I'd rather Marquette faces Purdue if they win tonight.

The memory of last years loss alone will be plenty of motivation for Shaka- he loves that angle.

Both teams are good, but I'd rather face Purdue for a chance at winning a ship and beating 1/2 b2b nights in that scenario.

More importantly Muggsy, what time should I fire up my evening pour over?

Edey would foul out in 5 minutes if they called every time he actually fouled.

Purdue fans are furious that their team has only taken 22 FT's in the first half.

This game is gonna go waaaay long. And it's gonna finish with walk-ons on the floor in crunch time at the rate they're calling fouls.

I'd be willing to bet that the second semifinal will be much more entertaining.

One of the most underrated and not so often discussed blessings of the Shaka Smart era is the exciting brand of basketball that Marquette currently plays.

There are many, many games that are extremely fun to watch, and we are blessed for that.

Not as pure as you'd like I'm sure, but it's fantastic

This reminds me so much of last year's BET - a close game to start where the team came out tight, but then fantastic performances against top level teams to close it out.  I think we can do it again today to close it out.

This team is better than last year's team.

I appreciate everything O-Max brought to the team - his D was awesome, he had that huge tip against X, he made some other big buckets, and his energy often set the tone.

But junior Jop + soph Ross + soph Gold > junior O-Max.

Shaka has more high-quality talent he can trust this season. Plus, Oso is better, the other returning starters are at least as good, Sean Jones is significantly better, and the freshmen show signs of being able to play.

We do need Jop though.  Sometimes he thinks he's Carmelo Anthony.  No need to dribble drive and ball stop before taking a contested shot.  Get Jop on pick and pops and cuts to the rim.

See, that's the beautiful thing about this team. Jop stepped up Monday when many other players were having trouble getting going. Jop had one of his worst games Tuesday, but several others had his back.

Shaka has a lot to work with.

Of all the players on the team, Jop is MU's biggest "ball-stopper." That's just who he is. Some nights it results in the kind of game he had Monday, other times he's less consequential. And when the latter is the case, Shaka just says next man up.

That's fair.  We have yet to play our A game imo.  I would like to see us shred the nets from distance, and we can.
