Seth Davis gives his annual top 5s with several Marquette mentions and one glaring omission :
Team is the #4 in Best bets (best record against the spread)
Joplin is the #2 Sixth Man (behind Sir'Jabari Rice of Texas)
Kolek is the #2 Playmaker (behind Yuri Collins of SLU)
Oso is the #2 Foul Shooter (worst FT shooters)
Chase is the #3 Rim Hater (best dunkers)
No mention of Shaka in the Coach of the Year top 5...but Sean Miller is #4. Miller's been good but his roster was picked top 3 in the conference and he's currently tied with two other teams for first.
Oso can't be too 5 worst FT shooters in the country. He's made some clutch FTs down the stretch in close games recently.
Davis is getting killed in the comment section about not putting Shaka in his COY candidates 5, and not just from Marquette fans. Pretty idiotic.
Also thought he could have found somewhere and somehow to make a positive mention about Oso, a very unique, efficient and effective player.
Guy has MU on a number of very positive lists, and the response is to fill the comments about how clueless the guy is because he didn't have MU on more lists.
Lol.

You think Shaka doesn't merit inclusion among those 5 that Davis chose when Marquette was picked to finish well behind Xavier (and 7 other BEast teams)? You don't believe Davis should get any criticism for that? Hey, you're allowed an opinion, too.
Miller being on a list for COY is fine, but then Shaka should be on there too.
One team picked to finish top 3
and one was picked to finish in the bottom 3.
Both are first place in the Big East......
Faux rage. MU is getting wonderful recognition.

+1. One guy picked to finish 3rd in the Big East and around 25-30 in D1 is currently tied for 1st and ranked #16. Pretty good. The other guy picked to finish 9th in the Big East and around 80 in the country is also tied for first and ranked two spots higher at 14. Freakin' awesome.
Ranking Coach A ahead of Coach B for COY honors is unfair and borderline brain dead. I know Wade's isn't wild about Shaka but I don't know how any basketball fan (let alone MU fan) wouldn't call BS.

I have no "rage," tower. I simply thought it was an idiotic oversight by Davis to not include Shaka on his top-5 list. Others can disagree, and they probably have no rage, either.

I am ecstatic with Shaka.
I'm just not someone who sees great things being said about Marquette and responds with, "this is BS to not have BETTER things to say about Marquette!" To each their own, I guess. But this is why media members mock our fanbase.
Maybe Davis thought more highly of MU than most people did. Maybe Davis values the head to head win Sean Miller has over Shaka. Maybe Davis realizes when you're talking national awards there are a lot of good candidates and just by the numbers he's going to have to leave some off the list.
Shaka's gotten plenty of love. He's doing just fine. He should be in the list for the top coaches in the country this year. But not including him doesn't make someone an idiot.
Yes
It's funny that X is #2 overrated and Sean Miller is on the CotY list. Maybe multiple authors.
If Seth Davis had Marquette ranked higher than Xavier entering the season his having Sean Miller ranked above Shaka for COY honors is logical. If he didn't, it's not. And since on average we were ranked about 50 spots lower than Xavier by the experts I put that probability at as close to zero as one can get.
Maybe he just screwed up and forgot Shaka when he made his list. Probably more likely than him being so obviously illogical.
Bottom line, whether it was an oversight or a special brand of stupid. I'm not "outraged" in any way, shape or form. I'm just embarrassed on Seth's behalf.

And it was IMHO.
The comments are kind of funny. Like 50% bagging on him about the Shaka omission. Is that just all you guys? ;D

In a weird way, that makes sense. He might think the team is "smoke and mirrors" and is winning because of the coach, not talent.

Of guys who have attempted at least 20 FTs this year, there are more than 100 guys with a worse percentage made.
I'd have to care about Seth Davis' opinion to get worked up by this. Since I don't, it's not really that big of a deal.
There is some nice recognition in there.

My goodness. He's just a college basketball writer generating content. You think he employs a great deal of logic when doing this or is embarrassed in anyway? People put way too much thought into these things. Win and everything else takes care of itself.

You're right it's an overreaction but I don't think it unfair for general populations to expect good well thought out content rather than cheap buzzfeed clickbait equivalents. And part of that good content would be have a reasonable argument to defend your case, in the situation with Sean Miller it's more than fair for twitter Scoopers to ask "hey something's not adding up here"
Faux rage.

You must be new to this internet thingy
I don't think the article sucks or Seth Davis hates us. It's not an amazing article but it was a fun read and enjoyed the recognition some of our guys got, especially Chase.
I also think Shaka should be in his top 5 COY candidates over Miller.
Expressing an opinion about an omission doesn't make someone fragile or that they think the omitter hates their team.

Agreed. It's totally fair to think, "Shaka deserves a COY award, whether national or BE, more than Sean Miller." No problem with that at all, and I'd agree. But I also understand that these national reporters, writing about a national award and a bunch of topics, aren't going to do super deep dives into these mid season. Hopefully if they have a vote in the actual award, they'll do that deep dive when it's time to submit their actual ballot. But there are a lot of good candidates, including Sean Miller and Shaka Smart, and my guess is that at the time Seth was writing the article Xavier was alone in the Big East and had a head to head win over Marquette. He's taken a roster that missed the NCAA Tournament last year, added a quality transfer, and currently has them tied for first in the Big East and in position to be a top 4 seed. He's deserving of recognition, even if Shaka might deserve it more.
To me, it's okay to see people have an opinion of Marquette that Marquette fans might not agree with and not have to jump all over them on Twitter or article comments. Apparently to much of the fanbase, we can't let one slight go, even if it is along with some very positive "awards" for other people on the team.

It doesn't. But when Marquette fans are all over everyone's mentions or in every comment section claiming people are clueless because they disrespect Marquette, it gets pretty old and tired. Which is probably why Marquette (allegedly) gets ignored by the media.

I agree with all of this, wades.
Can only speak for myself -- I neither posted anything on the twatter nor in article comments. I posted on a Marquette fanboard (this one) that I thought it was a foolish omission. I'm guessing that most Scoopers who have posted similar thoughts here also haven't gone wild on other social media about this.
So yes, I think some folks go over the top on this kind of thing. But I also think it's over the top to say that the likes of TAMU and I (and most Scoopers) are outraged or angry or "can't let one slight go." We think Shaka was overlooked and we said so. What's a fanboard for?

So Shaka isn't a Top 5 coach because he was gifted such a talented team by Wojo. Wojo is a Top 5 coach.

Obviously people are free to disagree with Davis (as I do) and free to express that disagreement here or anywhere else.
I think what's being mocked is the righteous indignation over Seth Davis having a different opinion.

Guys ... it's just his opinion.

Shaka Smart, Marquette: Smart didn't make a ton of waves in the transfer portal, but his player-development program is flexing right now. The Golden Eagles look like one of the best teams in the ACC, and Marquette's offense is ranked No. 1 on KenPom. Smart looks right at home at Marquette.
Going to win the BE and the ACC this year apparently. Unified belts!
