• We project the Golden Eagles with a 3% chance to make the Sweet Sixteen, but essentially no chance to reach the Final Four.

Not quite sure where this info is coming from, but I would imagine a win at Purdue would alter their data significantly.
Tough to read into any projections like this early in a season with so many unknowns, but it will be interesting to see how this changes from week to week based on single game results.

Classic slow vs. fast tempo matchup. If MU can jump on them early and make Purdue play from behind, we have a chance. A game of attrition would be bad news for MU.

Speed them up, get Edey uncomfortable, and hit some shots. Let's go!
Purdue
is
very
beatable.
Listen to the Scoopers who have written about tempo and not getting cheap fouls on Edey. Obviously it will be a challenge but we're not playing the Bucks. Control tempo, collective rebound, speed them up, force sone turns, get the three ball cooking and attack them all over the floor.
Purdue is 97-11 at Mackey in its last 108 games. Unstoppable big against the lack of our interior and competent guards. Not getting my hopes up.
Last time they lost a home non conf game was to Shaka. The following game they lost at MU (to Wojo no less!)
I believe we can (and will) beat Purdue. Edey will be a one-man wrecking crew for them, but they have young guards and I think our guards/O-Max will give them trouble. The best way we can slow Edey is to apply intense ball pressure on their guards and make it difficult for them to make quality post-entry passes.
I think we go 10 deep tomorrow night and see a lot of Chase Ross, Sean Jones, and Stevie rotating onto their guards. The road game factor is the part that gives me pause on a victory, yet I think we pull an upset.
We agree on the way MU is going to have to play. I hope Wrightsil is healthy. And I think MU needs all 11.
Speed them up, pressure the guards. When Edey gets the ball under the basket, let him score. Don't pointlessly foul him in a vain attempt to stop a dunk. Stay out of foul trouble. Front him. Use athleticism and jumping ability to disrupt lob passes to him. Hope MU can make it rain from 3.

Goose, what do you expect our line-up to be when Oso is off the floor? How can we muck this up a bit and get them to kick the rock away like Illinois did last year?
Muggsy
I think the lineups are going to be crazy all season. One thing I know, there will be a lot of guards on the court.

Very hard to doubt your opinion here, for obvious reasons.
There are only 3 teams on the schedule that have a better KenPom ranking than UW, so 6 games total versus UConn, Creighton, and X.
StJ, Nova, SH, Providence and ND are all currently in the top 75, so that's 9 additional games against current top 75 teams.
Then there's Butler&DePaul in the top 100 and the ugly outlier Gtown around 150ish, so 6 games there.
Let's make an educated guess and say 5 wins in the 6 games versus the bottom tier, 4/5 wins versus the middle tier, and conservatively 1 win versus the top tier.
That's right around that 10/11 win mark in conference.
IMO that middle tier of 9 games versus current KenPom teams lower than Marquette currently in the top 75 (which includes ND) will likely decide MUs ncaa fate. Win 5/6 of those 9 and they should be sitting pretty.
It is a bit difficult to buy that a 12-8 conference season wouldn't be enough in a year when Marquette is ranked in the top 40/45 going into conference play.
When do the first NET rankings come out? It's typically early December no?

Because based on this season's data, Marquette has been the second-best team in the Big East and is very safely in the top-four. It's worth looking at this piece (https://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=63841.msg1487220;topicseen#new) that I wrote about unbiased data this season. While things could change, and the Big East hasn't been good, that likely benefits Marquette because we have a schedule that is weak compared to how our team has performed. Using this season's data on T-Rank, we are favored to win every game but four. We are underdogs in both UConn games and on the road at Xavier (+0.7) and Creighton (+2.4) Obviously the projected record wouldn't match completely because of percentages, but that's a raw favorite record of 24-7 (16-4) come the Big East Tournament.
In this Big East, looking at how bad St. John's, Providence, Villanova, DePaul, and Georgetown have been, 12 or 13 wins feels like a pretty low bar to clear. I think a number of people are both underrating how good Marquette has been while overrating how good the rest of the league is.

This could be the perfect league for this young team to develop while still being able to win and get to the NCAA tournament. A down year for the conference with an ascending young team seems like a great opportunity. Hopefully that's the case.
Let's beat ND and go into conference play on a high note.
The Baylor game was quite the outlier. If we do that 1 out of every 9 games we play this season I will be absolutely floored. That's boosting our current year numbers quite a bit.

At 12-8, I think 8 would be the high mark. I'm looking at the Big East as a 4-bid league at the moment. 8 losses means at least 2 outside the field, and likely more in the event we get some good wins. This is the drawback to a weak Big East. Unless we're neck and neck with UConn, our ceiling is probably in the 5-6 range because they league just isn't that great. Could've really used a better record than 0-3 in our games decided by 5 or fewer points.

Definitely agree they're going to be tough the rest of the way. But I think it should take more than a few throw away games against Butler, DePaul, Seton Hall to offset 6 straight losses, many against pathetic competition, to get back to the acclaim they had earlier in the year.

ESPN Which Team has surprised You in a good way Why
Medcalf: I'll take Marquette here. Shaka Smart's squad was picked to finish ninth in the Big East, over Georgetown (10th) and DePaul (11th), in the preseason poll. The Golden Eagles lost their top two scorers from last season (Darryl Morsell and Justin Lewis) after reaching the NCAA tournament in Smart's first season. In his second, they're off to a 5-1 start in Big East play, with two of their four overall losses (Providence, Wisconsin) unfolding in overtime. They also have a five-point road loss to Purdue. But, Marquette has just one loss since Dec. 3. In a crowded conference, it's easy to overlook its success thus far. But this team is playing good, entertaining basketball -- sixth in adjusted offensive efficiency on KenPom -- right now. PS Edit This was written yesterday. Marquette is # 4 in adjusted offensive efficiency on KenPom today

Being a 4 or better should be the goal. 13 seeds are 'typically' where the talent disparity is noticable. 5/12s have shown to be tossups.

It's about the second/third round matchups. Playing into a 3 and 2 and not seeing a 1 until the E8 can be an easier road, especially as upsets (and thus easier paths) are more likely for those 3s and 2s than 1s.

There's an argument for 6 there too, but the data doesn't bear it out. The theory goes that you'd rather see the worst qualifying high majors (typically 11s) than the best mid-majors. At one point, I think 12s on the whole were doing better than 11s, which was where the 5/12 narrative came from, but over time that's shifted back. Here's the historic seed vs seed data:
https://mcubed.net/ncaab/seeds.shtml
I want Marquette to be the highest seed possible, with the exception that I'd rather be a 10 than an 8 or 9.
If we keep playing like this, we won't have to worry about 8, 9 or 10.

12. Marquette Golden Eagles (19-5)
Previous ranking: 13
This week: at UConn (Tuesday), at Georgetown (Saturday)
We've talked about Tyler Kolek before, but he's beginning to become more consistently aggressive offensively as some of his teammates hit mini scoring slumps. After hitting double figures five times in the first 18 games of the season, he's hit that mark in five of his last six. Remember, this was a player who averaged nearly 11 points as a freshman at George Mason before he became one of the elite passers in the country. Over the last six games, though, Kolek is averaging 18.0 points and shooting 41.4% from 3 while still dishing out 7.2 assists a night. At this point, there's a strong argument for him as Player of the Year in the Big East.

This says we'll be 15-5 in the Big East. I'm curious about which 2 games we're supposed to lose in this model. At Creighton, obviously, but it also says MU has a 63% chance to win at home against X. Is this service projecting a loss to DePaul, Butler or St. John's?

Remember that's not how odds work. If they have a 75% chance of winning each of the five games remaining, they still would only have a 24% chance of going 5-0.

We are projected to win out the Big East schedule, making it mathematically impossible for anyone else to win it, but we are the 3rd best team in the Big East? This model is weird
Yep .. every time I see UConn and Creighton ranked above MU, it's maddening.
According to them, when MU wins the Big East title, they'll be the third best team. Bogus!

Like free throws, winning doesn't matter.
