I'll cease posting on the other thread. My bad.
JFL!!
Crazy turn by Kolek. FOCUS!!
Kolek should have taken that to the rack they gave it to him
MU was actually going to run a play on that ball that Kolek threw away.

Sweet dish by Oso.
Some sloppy early turns. Gotta clean that up.
Gotta stop giving them break away buckets.
Half court D playing pretty well to start. No easy buckets
Sweet Jesus!! Stop yo-yoing with the rock. Move the basketball.
Ugh with the turnovers.
This is a bit MU of old type sloppy.
Gotta settle down
Great to see Greg hit one!
BAM!!! GE hits a three. That could settle us down.
I'm not liking this. When are we going to get down 12 and sew up the victory?
Love our depth.
But not sure I wanna roll with JL, Morsell and Kolek all on the bench very long.
Nice to have at least 1 of the proven buckets in there.
The young guys have been rough with the turnovers all year so far.
It's actually a great sign that they are competing still with those careless mistakes.
Longest time-out ever?
Man I hate the charge.
A bit out of sorts. Need Kolek and Morsell to wake up.
Not a good stretch there

I'd go zone for a run here.
Morsell has not been good tonight. Just need to keep it within 10 this half.
Getting outplayed right now. They're dictating everything on both ends. Need to increase the energy and play with for more poise and force.
Quote from: MuggsyB on November 21, 2021, 07:04:09 PM
Man I hate the charge.
That was a bad call. If he had shot the ball, they wouldn't have called a foul despite the defender being in the restricted zone. If you wouldn't call it a block on a shot, you shouldn't call it a charge on the pass.
That was a flop.
SBU is a well oiled machine. Patience, keep working, try to wear them down at the end.
Morsell gotta be smarter
Dumb shot leads to easy bucket.
Don't force it to get going
They're quicker in all areas right now and a tough team the pressure. Our guards are going to have to pick up their play.
Time to start going to the basket. Settling for 3's.
That's it Kur.
Good board by Kur and bucket
These guys are good at not fouling.
Finally drew number 3
No reason for JLew to be bringing the ball up coast to coast.
dang. we look like the tired team lacking energy
Shooting is atrocious right now
MU has 6 made 3's, two 2's and a FT in 17 minutes
Omax has got to learn how to shoot
He's wide open in the corner all the time and can't hit it.
MU needs to get some three's up. Man. Not enough from behind the arc

Maybe there's a reason he's open....
I think Kolek needs to look for his shot more. Still in it despite not hitting much.
We're running great offense. All of our 3s are wide open. Guys just have to make them.
Shooting poorly, but only down 8. They are getting open 3s, they will eventually fall. Morsell needs to stop forcing though.

That's my exact point. He's gonna keep being left open. He's gonna have to hit it.
Amazing we're only down 6. The D has been decent except for Lewis being late when he's played the 5. Morrell and Kolek are completely out of sorts. DM forcing way too much. If we can keep it within range you have to think we'll eventually hit some open shots. Can't expect a whole lot if we get goose eggs from Morsell/Kolek.

Gotta get Greg some looks
I thought we were down 6 not 8.
Love Stevie long term
Not sure this is the game for him though. This is a freshman half if I've ever seen one
Stevie has a lot of potential, but he plays so out of control right now

0 points 1 rebound from your senior leader won't translate to a win. He needs to step into his role in the second half
We got them right where we want them
Bonnie's scouted us well. We need to make some adjustments for the second half.
I could care less what anyone says, we're better than this team. 25 pts, we're getting nothing from 2 of our 3 best players, can't make open shots, and are kicking the ball away like crazy. We played a very undisciplined and poor first half and that can happen with a young team. SBU is experienced and pretty good but don't tell me this is a 2nd week tourney team ESPN. Utter nonsense. We are more than capable of coming back and taking over in the 2nd half.
Kolek and Morsell basically non existent and only down 8.

+1. Only fear is eventually we're going to come up short, especially with a young team. We can't keep playing from behind. However, the first half is done. We're down by 8. Worry about slow starts tomorrow and finish strong!!!

Even though they've been able to flip the switch so far this year, I'd rather not be in that position against a team like Bona. Those guys know their system inside and out and it's hard to rattle the.

I really need to be convinced that Prosper is worth the playing time he gets. Especially with Greg back and Joplin starting (a bit) to hit his shots.
Looks like a young team playing their 3rd game in 4 days against a super experienced and ranked team.
Ran outta gas. They're playing their fourth game in 6 nights, and playing grown men.
Wanted to see a little more, but not terribly surprising.
omg lol..

This. I don't see a lack of energy. I see inexperience manifesting itself as a total lack of awareness on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.
1 loss this week is better than any of us expected.
Gotta get better now.
Starting with the Wisco game it's a 6 game gauntlet.
Mama said there'd be nights like these or something
This is one of those frustrating games we knew would happen, yikes
From reading Shaka's lips, it appeared he got the T for slapping the floor ! ! ! He even said, I did it for my team ! ! !
These games are going to happen. Good learning experience. Let's see how they compete the rest of the half.

I'm at peace with this. It was a good tournament. Let's beat the 2 bunnies and then try and grab 2 of 3 from Wisc, ucla, and kstate. That would be a huge success.

Wholeheartedly disagree. Short shots, slow to switch and box out, giving up open dunks, sloppy handle, sloppy passes. Add this to an experienced team, not a good outcome. Now, we might be able to turn it on, we have players who are capable, but our guys are gassed.
Axe the press imo.

How are we more talented? I think the Bonnies are a good team.
Time to hit some shots.
With the threes not going down, no one has been kicking out on drives anymore, even though the Bonnies keep collapsing. I'd like to see them stick with the plan whether the shots are dropping or not. A lot of the missed threes were good looks, and better than forcing it up at the hoop in traffic.

I suppose a positive spin on this is that it is good to have a tired, poor shooting night in a game they weren't expected to win.
Mitchell is in over head tonight.
We just keep trying to beat them 1 on 1. No offense at all.
Why does this always happen on national TV?
Time for some humble pie

Bummer. Was a super fun run and we should all be ecstatic to be 5-1 right now. Take these next 2 cupcakes and then find a way to go 2-1 against Wisco, K State and UCLA and we're in FANTASTIC shape.

Wow, MU had their noses rubbed the the feces, too. Bonnies have an attitude.
Welcome back
About as much class as I'd expect from them.
I will love seeing them get knocked off in March.
Not having a pure shooter...not even one...will matter a lot as the season rolls on.
Horrendous shooting on really open threes could have been less. Stuff happens. Nice of them to finish down 16 instead of 25.
Thank God for IGNORE feature ! ! ! 8-)
Getting that to 16 instead of the 30-35 it could've been is much better for our postseason hopes. This wasn't pretty and no one will be celebratory, but considering how bad it looked earlier, that's a positive.

Hey congrats! You beat an inexperienced team you should beat.
Enjoy the opening round loss come March.
In game news, glad they finally hit this seven foot goof ball with a technical. Why hes constantly showboating and flexing after making layups on an open rim is beyond me.
Funny, but that's not what I heard before the game. This team is good and will go deep into the tournament. No telling where they might end up. Feel bad for you guys. never really had a chance.

Agree, in a way it's a silly thing to take as a positive, but it's very true. The final margin doesn't look that bad. I was pissed Ellis missed those last two free throws.
The Bonnies subs looked completely lost out there.

Just knock it off. Whining is for losers.

Can we stop with the 10 freshmen. Three of them played over 20 games last year. We also have 3 five-year seniors and Oso who didn't play much but still has a year of DI experience. We do have 12 guys who played a total of 5 games each with this coach but we are not that inexperienced.

Agreed. Inexperienced in the system, but starting Morsell, Kuath, OMP, Kolek and Lewis is not an inexperienced team.

We have 4 freshman playing this year. It's just a dumb Covid thing that others are considered "freshman".
Included in the "10" are a walk on, a redshirt, and a couple of guys who saw major minutes last year. It's silly.

Our bench is extremely inexperienced. And that's on Shaka. Most good D1 teams got older this year via the portal.
Teams got older by bringing in 1 year guys. Why would Shaka do that as that's not how you rebuild a program. He brought in a few nice older players, but I love the young guys. Let them gain experience as we're not going deep in March without developing these guys and continuing to recruit high level freshman year in and year out. It'll happen, but making our team older this year is a bandaid approach.

What's embarrassing is when a fan from another team creates a name simply to jump onto the boards and kick the MU fan base when we're down. Last night was ugly, we all know it. We don't need a Bonnie taking shots at us on our own boards on top of it.

Difficult to find positives from last night but at least our T was not called for having 6 players on the court. Clemson took the bball expression "6th man" literally. ;D

Ok, lets rephrase to Experience and continuity. We'll remove emotions and look at just facts & Stats. See Kenpom stats below.
This is what and how continuity is measured https://kenpom.com/blog/measuring-continuity/
MU ranks 338th in country (in minutes continuity)
As far as experience......
Experience Definition: Uses eligibility class weighted by minutes played. A freshman has no years experience, a sophomore has one year experience, etc.
MU ranks 350th out of 358 D1 teams at at .79 years
One of our freshmen hit a game winner against Wisconsin last year and another won A10 rookie of the year. Lol
That's why saying we have 10 freshmen on our roster is misleading.

Again, the objective stats show that we are inexperienced. On top of that, they have hardly played real, competitive games with one another.
It matters. It will matter less as the season wears on.
I've been and am thrilled with the season so far. It would be a good start for a deep experienced team.
Yesterday's game was what I expected to see this year, at least on the offensive side of the ball. A team that can't score. I did expect better defense, overall, but there will be lapses with a young team.
So, great start, a loss to a quality team is not a bad thing this time of year. How the team responds is what will count, and I expect this to be a learning experience with Shaka leading the way.
And, if we have to lose one, losing to St. Bonaventure is a nice one to lose. I will be pulling for them all year and hoping for the best for them. Love the smaller schools that put together a great team against all odds.
Eh - good for a young team to get the doors blown off at least once - should build some bounceback.

But you've already done that.
Yes, Marquette was the younger and less experienced team.
No, Marquette didn't lose because they were the younger and less experienced team.
They lost because the Bonnies were far better in every facet of the game.
If this had been a competitive game that came down to some key possessions at the end, I'd be more willing to buy the inexperience excuse.
But inexperience didn't cause Kolek, OMax and Morsell to shoot 1-for-18. Or for the defense to part like the Red Sea over and over again.
MU had the same lack of experience against Illinois, Ole Miss and West Virginia. Didn't cause them to poop the bed in those games.
We just got our tails kicked by a team that was much, much better across the board. Learn from it and move on to the next one.
Didn't mean to turn it in to a pissing match but then again it's Scoop. This team has 5 guys who started last year on their respective teams. How many teams can say they have 5 starters returning? Again. What we have is a bunch of guys for the most part never played together in a system they never played in.

5 starters returning? That feels a bit dubious...
- Darryl Morsell, 26/30 starts: He missed one game, but that definitely qualifies as a starter.
- Tyler Kolek, 18/21 starts: Also clearly qualifies.
- Kur Kuath, 15/27 starts: I guess more than a spot starter, tied for fifth on the team in starts, so close enough.
- Greg Elliott, 5/27 starts: This is where it gets questionable. Did Greg start some games? Yes. Was he a starter, not really.
- Olivier-Maxence Prosper, 2/24 starts: Technically, he started, but two games, the same number of times he eclipsed 20 minutes? That's not what you're calling a starter, is it?
- Justin Lewis, 1/27 starts: He started 1 game. 1! Would we have called Jayce Johnson a starter in 2020 because he took the tip on Senior Night? This is just silly.
At best, we have 3 "starters" returning. Regardless, this is not an experienced team by any stretch of the imagination and your attempts to say otherwise are at best disingenuous.
Lots of thoughts here but in the end, MU had its third worst OE game in their KPom's history. And the Bonnie's had their worst OE game since 2020.
Fix the half court O. Our Defense is elite.

I think the problem with the way the networks (and schools) have chosen to frame this in terms of eligibility, not experience.
Calling Lewis, Kolek, or Ighadoro "freshmen" because they have 3 more years of eligibility after this season is confusing to those to think a freshman is in his first year playing D1 and has zero experience before this season.
I think it's a fair request that when commentators throw out comments like "Marquette has 10 freshmen" they point out that five of them have actually had a season of D1 experience, 1 is redshirting and not playing at all this season, and four are true first-year players with no prior D1 experience.
And this isn't a huge ask--the commentators know this is going to be the case for every team in the country. When you do your game prep, know the difference between a COVID-related classification freshman, and those really have no D1 experience.

Precisely. There is more context and nuance beyond the 10 freshmen comment.
