Title: Floor Slap
Post by: Milkshakes on November 19, 2021, 06:44:28 AM
I find it so fascinating that Stevie, Kam and at least one other guy have done the floor slap. Every time someone does it I kind of tilt my head and say "did he just do that?"  Just seems ironic to me.  Has it become a thing with younger guys or is it just ironic?

Sorry if posted elsewhere. Love scoop but generally don't read past page one of any post cause well, you know....

They're thanking Wojo for recruiting them to Marquette.  A nice nod from them

I also find this ironic and hilarious at the same time.  Wojo if he's paying attention at all has to be cringing.  He shied away from it and Shaka embraces it.

His teams never had an opportunity to slap the floor with the way they played D

One of the good things to come out of the pandemic was coach's dress code relaxing. I mean Huggy Bear was ahead of the game, but nice to see catching on.

Disagree.  With the amount those guys get paid, there's no reason they can't put on a jacket and tie for two hours.  It makes the games seem just a little bit bigger when the coaches are dressed up.  Leave the warmups and golf shirts for practice time.

Huggins BE tourney like 9 button gold zoot suit was an all-timer.

I can imagine the convo with the AD:

AD: "Huggs, in this tournament you're wearing a suit."

Huggins: "Not gonna happen. You know I'm a track suit guy."

AD: "This is not negotiable. The BoT is putting their foot down on this one. It's suit or you're bussing back to WV before game one tips."

Huggins: <death glare> "Fine. But you're not gonna like it."

Bankers and attorneys don't even wear coats and ties anymore.  Do you expect a basketball coach to dress fancier than they do?

For the record, I prefer people to be dressed up.  I like doing it myself, and I hate going to an expensive restaurant and have the guy next to me wearing cargo shorts and a Tom Brady jersey.

Agreed.  But the coach represents the University and I think most of us can agree that a suit and tie projects a better image from leadership than a warmup suit.

Football coaches wearing comfortable clothes = awesome.

There is absolutely zero chance that if I were a basketball coach, I would wear a suit and tie.

Shaka is the first coach in Marquette's history to consistently not wear a shirt and tie.  There hasn't been an NCAA tournament during his tenure, so your denominator is zero.  Therefore, the answer to your question is "undefined".

Marquette is 3-3 with coaches wearing ties in the Final Four.

BUT one of those losses was SOOOOOOOO bad that it negates any Final Four wins.

Also MU is 0-1 in Final Fours where coaches wear a tie but don't know how to tie a tie.

Is the pro-suit crowd really suggesting that they preferred seeing Buzz's pit stains and sweat marks 5 minutes into the first half? Shaka is an active coach. His clothes should reflect that.

As for complaints about the shoes. If you think wearing Jordans is dressing down, go ask your grandkids and see what they say. This ain't 7 am mass.

Should we get this locked?
There are usually prop bets during the super bowl on what the coaches will wear.  If we merge this with the betting discussion a lock...is a lock.

Exactly.  People saying that Wojo ruined the basketball product have no historical sense of perspective.  (Which is why I don't devote any time to reading the Bitcher's posts.)

It really must have been a private hell for you when Marquette beat the top-ranked defending champions. Or beat Wisconsin 4x. Or when Sam hit that shot at Creighton, the highlight of the team winning 20 out of 22 games over 3 months.

Or maybe you were already rooting for Marquette to lose during all of those times, so those really were hellish experiences for you.

It was actually a private hell winning 0 tournament games in 7 years, 0 regular season Big East titles, being entirely non-competitive in the Big East tournament, and attending games in a defeated, uninspired student section.  Even the "good wins" weren't that good because even the students with a half a brain could see the program was, ultimately, going nowhere.  So nobody cared.

Gotta love this paragraph:

"Distractions came from multiple directions. One of Marquette's recruits, Gerald Posey, a 6-foot 1-inch freshman, failed to meet the NCAA Proposition 48 requirements and wasn't allowed on the court. Posey was regarded as one of the top 75 high school players in the country. Soon after that, Michael Flory, decided he would redshirt the season. Flory said he needed to concentrate on his academics. Sophomore John Ellenson and freshman Rod Grosse both had conflicts with Dukiet. Michael Sims was arrested on battery charges (which were later dismissed). The charges caused him to miss one game and his missing the team plane for the Stetson game caused him to miss another. Meanwhile senior Tony Reeder was sidelined after he was injured in a car accident Dec. 30. Reeder suffered a fractured rib and a strained shoulder in the accident. Shortly after that he was declared academically ineligible. Another classroom casualty was freshman Joe Nethen, who was declared academically ineligible after the first semester classes."

What a f*cking trainwreck the Dukiet era was.  Really the sole bright spot was Tony Smith, who should receive a special award for simply being a part of that mess.

Who else remembers Rod Strickland laughing in Anthony Candelino's face because AC was trying to guard him?

Yep.  We were all laughing to be honest.

My god you're insufferable.  The point is, Wojo and his basketball product sucked, buddy.  That's consensus.

Yes, I'm the "insufferable" one who brings up a former coach 100 times in threads that have absolutely nothing to do with that coach.

I agree. Black or grey suits with thin black ties. And fedoras. And only allow themselves to be photographed in black and white.

Oh, and it probably goes without saying, but no women.

Nothing ruins a night at the ball game when women are around.  Man, I miss Eisenhower

Whatever new strawman you want to come up with is merely in your head.

Dude man bruh. You bringing Wojo into every topic is insufferable. Chill boomer, get over him. Not every topic needs to be about him.

You sound like the person who is always upset about their ex but never let's it go... and actually you were the problem.

And I like most of your takes. But it's gotten weird...

There's another topic where you bring him up and say "don't say his name!!!" And then a few posts later you say his name and then talk about him extensively. Sheeeeesh.

And you are playing the "poor me" card. You whine way more than people here who lived thru Deane & Dukiet.

To be completely fair, just by a cursory look at this topic, at least 4 unique posters used the word "Wojo" in their posts in this thread even before I did.

But whatever.  I'll be the villain if that's what everyone wants.

The real villains are the people that don't wear suits to work

He singlehandedly ruined the basketball product for the duration of my college attendance.  I doubt most of you can say the same.

In the context of wailing and gnashing of teeth over ugly wins over SEIU and UNH, imagine if you dare a season (https://wiki.muscoop.com/doku.php/men_s_basketball/1987) that featured losses to:

  • Tennessee (by 26)
  • Wisconsin
  • Minnesota (by 24)
  • Cleveland State
  • Kansas State (by 21)
  • Loyola Marymount
  • Notre Dame (twice...by 18 and 22)
  • Iona (by 15)
  • Dayton
  • DePaul (twice...by 15 and 12)
  • Fordham (by 20)
  • Loyola Chicago
  • Evansville
  • Virginia Tech (by 18)
  • Valparaiso
  • Creighton

Not to worry, these were offset by impressive wins over the likes of Hartford, Western Michigan, Air Force, Stetson, and Canisius.

No question that Wojo sucked, but he was no Bob Dukiet.

Oh my. I am so, so, sorry.

Now let's offset that with some more Joe Nethen stories. Always loved those threads.

Nah, just Wojo. Unsurprising inflated sense of self-worth, though.

Says the guy explaining away why he is so obsessed with Wojo because "HE single handedly ruined MY college basketball experience, so HE deserves it!"
