I like Wojo but I love Marquette Basketball. It occurs to met that both sides miscalculated when hiring Wojo. MU thought they were getting the son of K and Wojo thought he could breath Duke into MU, sadly both were wrong.
W is no K and MU is not Duke. I think both sides need to rethink the marriage. That said I would not fire Wojo, yet. I would not argue to the death with anyone that Wojo is a really good coach. I would argue that he is not a really bad coach. While his ability is questionable his overall numbers are not. He has a winning record and while upside down in conference play he is not if you discount his 1st season's record.
He made the NCAA twice and the NIT once and would have made the NCAA last season. He recruits well and has another top 25 class coming in next year. Hardly a death knell for a program.
My issue isn't getting players it is his inability to keep them. I don't like have 3 slots open for next season and I don't like filling them on the run through a transfer portal. He should already have players to develop over time. While the bar is low, this year may have been his best coaching year.
He actually changed lineups for effect during the season and attempted changing defenses some. Possibility of a light going on in his head.
Firing a coach is always a big chance to fail as well as succeed.
If Wojo did get fired who would be the candidate to take his place?
edit: paragraphs are your friend.

Well since you mention Coach K his 5 at Army (W/L 73-59) and next 2 at Duke (W/L 27-30) Total W/L 100-89 were not outstanding. He hit his Stride later. Like Forest Gump noted.

Honest question - are you related to Wojo?
I just looked at today's basketball scores. I was surprised to see Duke just won in the first round of ACC tournament to go one game over .500. We will go one game over .500 if we win tomorrow in the first round of Big East tournament.
Wojo is accomplishing the same as Coach K this year with less talent.
I think for the long term sake of the program you need to make a change. Unless Wojo is just blind or deaf or both, he has to have felt unwanted or under appreciated at MU lately. That feeling sucks in any job. That's puts us in a no win situation. They suck next year, that sucks for us. They do really well next year, that also sucks for us because the guy will likely give us all the finger and head out of town and we'll be starting over anyway. The way I see it, we have only one more *potential* good team under Wojo max. I guess it depends if you think that's worth it.

To Fire or not to fire. That is the question that needs to be asked every single day.
He will be back and, frankly - at this point - he should come back as well (as weird and as up-and-down this roller coaster has been).
We have won four of our last five games. There is tremendous optimism for next year, between returning players and incoming freshmen. I think he is back regardless, but if he can win a game or two in the BET, it can really have a huge impact going into next season. We have not gotten the results or the consistency under Wojo, but this is also the first year in several years the team is playing some of its best basketball at the end of the season. This might very well be a turning point for the program - which I am hoping is the case.
Now, if we get blown out in our one and only game in the BET (and that is our last game), the heat is on for next year. No doubt.

Dude, ignore 5, Farley and Panda. I've managed enough people in my life to know that anyone this emotionally/personally invested in something they have no control over is either dealing with something that they can't control in their lives but wish they could (career, marriage, family illness, etc) or are just not emotionally secure.
In this case the only exception is if they are a parent of a player or a mega donor. I don't get the sense they are either of these.

Whether you love or hate WOJO a practical person gives him another year. He has some amazing raw talent in his hands right now. Seems unwise to squander some of the best recruits Marquette has had because we are frustrated. If WOJO was a bad guy maybe you get there but in addition to quality players he actually seems like a class act. He is not having any fun but he is fighting. Resilience and toughness does matter. Plus there is no money right now to pay him off and go hunting for a high flyer. If he leaves we will be seeking a budget coach which is a complete crap shoot. Keep him, try to support him and see if we get rewarded next year. It is the only reasonable path.

The problem with this is you could take this exact post, word for word, and timestamp it any day from 2016 to 2021 and it would not be out of place. And I'm sure, should we retain Wojo, we will hear another iteration of this exact same post in 2022, 2023, 2026, ad infinitum.

I want and think Marquette will Win tomorrow and Marquette will make a run in the Big East Tourney. I think Coach Wojo may be here next year. But not that it means anything, am just reporting in an article ironically written by someone named McGuire, My HS and Marquette University Friend's Cousin Eric Konkol was named C-USA Coach of the Year Today at Louisiana Tech. Also not that it means anything but Side note Ex MU assistant Tod Kowalczyk is front runner for MAC coach of the year per Myron Metcalf ESPN.

And we've already reached the point in the season where we start smoking the copium and talking ourselves into next year's team being better. How exactly? We don't know about transfers, we don't know about departures, and we have a ton of holes. There is a much higher chance of us being exactly where we are now, next year, than for us to be in the top 4 in the BEAST. That's unfortunately where I'm at as well. It sounds good in theory, but his name has never really been seriously floated at all for any jobs in the past. Save the year his name was mentioned for Va Tech but that ended up most likely being his agent floating his name for a large extension from MU.

As a pretty strong ProJo turned into a NoJo ... sorry, but even that stuff is on the coach.
Managing egos is a big part of any coach's job. Leaders ultimately are responsible for results.
And while every coach loses players sometimes, even good ones, it is up to him to replace any lost players with those good enough to keep things rolling.
Even after Hausershima, I stayed strongly in Wojo's corner through 2020 National Marquette Day, when our win over Butler put us at 17-6, moved us into the top 20 and all but clinched Wojo's third NCAA bid in four years.
But since then, Marquette is 14-19, and this year's team has been mediocre for months now.
Neither his body of work nor his trend are good enough IMHO.
Having said all that, I'll be rooting strongly for our guys today against Georgetown, and hopefully beyond, to save the season.

NO HE SHOULDNT BE JUDGED ON THAT IN A YEAR LIKE THIS....that is clownish. You have a lot of fans who have fake fandom.
This is not a BLUE BLOOD program. Yet....even they are losing this year. Fan are throwing up this 'I want to win and judge him on wins...' crap. No always.
It takes time to build especially with defections of major stars and early entrants to the NBA when they were not ready and it was not warranted.

No doubt.
This didn't age real well.

Sounds like Woj missed Casimir Pulaski Day?
Or more importantly Smigus-Dyngus...
If Wojo is back next year, I suspect Fiserv will sound a lot like games this year.
The sound of apathy can be deafening.

Apathy from money paying/donation making alumni mixed with booing from students is a baaad mix.
Program is a joke. Laughable that some thought we had any kind of tournament run in us... no matter what the draw
Seriously, how is this still even a question?
I don't think it's a smart idea to cling to Wojo because of current talent or potential incoming recruits. Pure talent has never been the issue during his tenure here. There's been plenty of talent.
He's had 5 stars, 4 stars, McDonalds All Americans, future NBA guys, college All Americans, a crapload of top 100 recruits.. All added up to 0 NCAA wins. Talent is not the problem. Year in and year, out I've watched MU lose to, and finish below teams with less talent. The MU program has had no identity during Wojo's tenure.
I don't understand why AD's still chase after Coach K assistants. The Duke program is built to a point that basically every single game they take the floor, they will have the more talented team. These Duke assistants, like our Wojo, then go somewhere and aren't really up to the challenge of building a program, building an identity or system that can lead to sustained success.
Their whole prior experience is with a program where they just recruit for the easiest brand to recruit for, and then enter every game with significantly more talented players than their opponent.
I can't say that I really disagree with much of what you just posted. The coach K coaching tree's success overall is less than awesome. Wojo has brought in a lot of talent and he has left a lot of w's on the table. I would make three observations though.
First of all, look at Marquette's bigs. They are not big they are tall. If you took a picture of them as profiles they would look like a bar code. Wojo needs to get a physically large body on the baseline,he needs a center not forwards. memo for transfer portal.
Second, MU and all the middling teams in the big east should get some credit for the wins they did have. No conference is as dense with quality teams as the big east. Wisconsin is 10 and 10 in conference play. 5 of those wins came at the expense of the bottom 3 of the 14 team conference If you could add 5 wins to MU's record it would look pretty good. The big east has no bottom feeders.
Third, Give Wojo some credit for staying until the game was over. His disappointment in the teams performance was evident throughout the game. I still don't believe that Cooley left the bench before the horn.

Theo isn't exactly small. 6'9 245. Dawson is a freshman and will get larger. Also, the type of guy you describe doesn't just exist to be plucked from a tree. There are very few huge guys.
The Big East was a JOKE this year brother. We are about to send only 3 teams to the NCAA tournament... 4 is a very small possibility.
Wojo gets zero credit for doing his 'job' of staying to end of the game.

"Theo eats weights" was the new "Markus Howard is only 17."
Theo is a forward,Garcia is a forward, Igadoro is a forward and the big kid coming in is a forward. Need a center, Otule, Odell Ball somebody, anybody with a rear end

That's all on Wojo too though. If you're not going to get those guys then you're clearly concentrating on guys that you think fit well into your system. His problem is there is no real system or at least it's not coming to fruition. He seems to try and focus on everything and by that is not good at any one thing. Are we a defensive team? Transition team? Shooting team? High post? Drive and slash? None of that. Just a mish mosh of running around and "playing hard"

Is Theo's skill set all that different than Otule's? Maybe by size he's a forward, but he doesn't play like one. He can't really guard in space. His defense is shot blocking. His offense is limited to dunks and baby hooks in the post.
You don't need a traditional center in college basketball. Theo was incomplete, but largely fine and not the problem on this team.
Long time Nojo here, check my posts, but I do think that I saw growth this year. I still believe that Wojo needs bench help - an assistant that lives and dies x & o's and fundamentals and gets enough rope to be the man.
As a program manager and recruiter, I'm a GoJo. His coaching is improving and he's learning. No, its not fast enough for the fan base, but he might get there.
IF he keeps his guys, I'm good with him in charge and happy to support him in 2021/22 and beyond and watch the growth continue. If significant transfers pop, I think you need to make a change. Program can't be successful starting over every year.

We disagree on some of this, but I appreciate you calmly and rationally giving a point of view that is unpopular here on Scoop.
I think Wojo should have been fired after the DePaul loss, and I certainly hope he's let go now. But if he's back in 2021-22, I will continue to support our program as I have for 45 years, and I will root for us to get back to the NCAA tournament and hopefully win some games there.
And yes, if he's back, he would benefit from having a strong, veteran assistant coach.

Good point. If/when he returns, I'd be much more inclined to support him if he retools his staff/approach to the game. It would go a long way with an angry fan base if he admits what he's tried in the past hasn't worked.
Keep doing the same thing and it's going to get ugly next year.
I'm not slighting Theo. I thought he always gave all he had and is a good rim protector. Given his growth as a free throw shooter,I have to wonder how big a victim he was to the Marcus Howard syndrome wherein his only function was to rebound and get the ball out to Marcus. He never really was allowed to develop a game around the rim until this season. I think much of the same could be said for Cain,Elliot and to an extent everyone one the team whose function was to feed Marcus.
Not cutting on Marcus either but he distorted the team chemistry. Perhaps he came along to soon in Wojo's coaching career to be properly handled. While those teams were awesome to watch, they never were fully integrated.

No wonder they turned it over so often they were feeding some guy named Marcus and there wasn't anybody with that name on the court. During their tenure
...whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of awfully played basketball.
Or to take arms against the team losses.
And by my season ticket plan, end them!
To die - to sleep,
No more. And by sleep that's what my MUBB apathy is doing.....

Two "ifs". I will add two more. If he has not shown a willingness to do the things you listed in 7 years, why would there be any good reasons to believe that he will this coming year? If adding "a strong, veteran assistant coach" (MU 82) to help him was not his idea, why should we believe that he would accept the advice given?
I think you nailed it in your last sentence. I believe he will keep doing the same thing, and that its going to get ugly.
