I haven't followed a player's recruitment as closely as this one since Vander I would say. Concerns me that the Crystal Ball guys havent updated at all since his visit and no one has Xavier as an MU lean despite what appears to have a been a very positive visit and a strong interest from both parties. When do those guys usually update? This guy to me looks alot like Gardner with the footwork but with MUCH more athleticsm...Gardner didn't dunk in a game until his senior year from what I remember....Need a big man like this

The cristal bowel is just a little marketing toy. Many who play it update when either (a) there is widely-known information that is known by the general public or (b) they are bored and update a punch of little picks (i.e., play the game for fun).
X and mom have been transparent with their plans and timing. Not much for the marketing toy players to react to.
Don't sweat it.
If there's a big shift, it will probably start Thursday night or Friday morning. Once those picks get made, it usually means word is out.

I could be wrong, but I think Gardner hurt his knee when he came down after attempting a dunk in his sophomore year.
I think hes going to MSU, we gave it a great shot but if he matches up the pros and cons of the schools and the family and girlfriend angle, we come up a little short. But I,ve been known to be wrong!

The problem with people's armchair analysis of the pros and cons is that it leaves out probably THE most important factor. The relationship with the coaches. We have no idea how he feels about Izzo and company versus Wojo and company. Just let it play out and see what happens.

If a middle aged man was making the decision he would pick the safe choice, the more sure thing. Lucky for MU X is an 18 year old kid. That is why the recruiting process is so hard to predict. (Glad my job doesn't depend on it). You guys have only got a few days to wait for an answer. Unless you have true inside information lets not try to handicap this based on what we think is important.

I point that has not been suggested is how good is Tillman? He is ranked in the Top100 for sure, but at the lower end. At MSU, will he be over-recruited by Izzo. I am
not sure at Marquette that will happen. It sounds like Tillman is an undersized 5 or 10 foot range player at the 4. Where does he fit at MSU vs. MU? Is Theo John
the same player or Eke? Differences?

That's a terrible recruiting pitch. Not only is it small-minded thinking, but it's a lie. No chance MU is going to go four years without recruiting another PF (nor, obviously, should they). And promising a kid he'll start for four years? So, if say, MU has a chance to land a McDonald's AA at the same position two years from now they shouldn't?
The pitch should be that Marquette intends to play at the highest level. That means bringing in the best players at ALL positions to compete, and that competition will make Xavier (or whoever else they're recruiting) the best player they can be.

So what's your answer as a middle aged man? A coach that has sent every class (outside of 1 I believe) to the final four? Or a coach that hasn't coached a single post season game. Not a knock on wojo, takes time...but I'm confused by your analysis. Looks to me that Tillman would play day 1 at MSU. You're talking about a top 5 program that has made you a priority. I hope he comes to MU, but it would be hard to say no to that. if by safe you mean floor time, there's no guarantee at MU. John and Heldt will compete for his minutes.

+1. Has the "I will be the best husband ever because I'm so out of your league" proposal ever worked in the history of everything?
Well, Jim McIlvaine was ranked slightly higher than Tillman is (mid 70s, IIRC) and Kevin O'Neill kept him away from UCLA by using the "they'll recruit over you" pitch sucessfully.

Without knowing anything other than the social media angle, I'm going 90% MSU and I'm being conservative for MSU. Just one persons opinion.
To take a bit of an opposite approach to the "Wojo MUST get someone," I am gonna just believe that it will be a coup if they get X. It's hard to beat the hometown feeling, but lately Wojo and his staff have tapped the state of Michigan with some success and with players that X is familiar with.
Pragmatically, I do think TAMU is spot on with his percentages. I am super impressed how "in" on Xavier the staff has been.
Quote from: esotericmindguy on September 27, 2016, 10:08:24 AM

MSU, that's the point. If X choses MU it will be based on his assessment of relationships that those outside the process can't possible know.
For anyone taking MUFINY's post on the Sparty site as gospel, it's worth mentioning that one of the main points outlined by the staff on Tanya's Twitter was Tamia's education. Safe to say they are leaving no stone unturned to make sure that edge MSU has is minimized.
Now that doesn't mean MU will actually be a cheaper or even comparable alternative, but the financial aid staff is very good at making Marquette look like an affordable option.
If we don't get X we have Hasahn French locked up I think.

True, last year was the first year in a great while that MU had a 4 and a 5 that were pretty good, before that it was Jimmy Mac and Key. It seems to be very hard to
over recruit here, we are not stacking 5 stars over 5 stars at MU. This is not the Al era anymore, not even sure the Buzz era. If they are able to get X, I can see movement back to the top of the Big East again. With the 2 kids last year, 4 this year and a couple next year, it sure seems Wojo might turn the corner. Losing
X, will hurt, but I can still see a John, Cain and Hauser front line the following year and for a few years after that. Sam will be the key in recruiting Joey. I might
like Joey better than X, has he has an outside game. Can play 4 out and 1 in with Joey. Like Golden St. style of play.

The Buzz era? Buzz did great with JUCOs, but Wojo is already proving to a better recruiter at the high school level. Buzz landed 10 RSCI top-100 kids in 5 full recruting years: Junior Cadougan (47-2009), Erik Williams (67-2009), Jeronne Maymon (73-2009), Vander Blue (48-2010), Jamail Jones (74-2010), Juan Anderson (81-2011), Steve Taylor (82-2012), Jajuan Johnson (30-2013), Deonte Burton (54-2013), Duane Wilson (59-2013).
Wojo has landed 7 RSCI top-100 kids in less than 3 years: Henry Ellenson (6-2015), Haanif Cheatham (87-2015), Matt Heldt (96-2015), Brendan Bailey (62-2016), Markus Howard (71-2016), Sam Hauser (94-2016), and Jamal Cain (95-2017). If we land one of Tillman, Nwora, or Epperson, that will be 8.
Also, I'm discounting 2014 because of Buzz's class being split up, Wojo not having a full year to recruit, and not knowing who to attribute Sandy to.
Obviously we'll see how retention goes, but 50% of Buzz's top-100 kids transferred on us (Williams, Maymon, Jones, Taylor, Burton) and thus far you could maybe argue that three (at most?) lived up to the billing: Blue, Johnson, and Wilson. Clearly we won't have a thorough estimation of Wojo's recruits for 2-3 years, but I'd argue that thus far, both Ellenson and Cheatham have already shown they were worthy of their lofty ratings. I think you could safely argue that while Henry was fantastic, Haanif was a better player as a freshman than any high school player Buzz recruited in his entire tenure. The only Buzz recruit that could maybe be included in the discussion is Duane Wilson, who did that playing for Wojo.

Yes, Wojo has done a very good job of trying to re-build. I would probably have to say Carlino and Reinhardt were Top 100 kids as well. One thing we all must admit,
Buzz left the cupboard pretty bare. The future looks bright, at least, MU will a bench and competition for playing time, that is first step in getting better. Next year
MU will be very young, besides Matt, all freshman or Sam, a sophomore.

That's simply not true. Next year Marquette will have two seniors (Duane Wilson, Andrew Rowsey) that will both be fifth year players and four juniors (Heldt, Cheatham, Carter, and Anim). While it's possible that we could see some of those players leave, that's still 46.2% of the roster being upperclassmen.
If your point is that they'll be young up front, that's partially true, but you specifically mention Heldt and Hauser, who will have more experience than our starting frontcourt did a year ago when Henry and Luke were manning the 4 and 5.

I agree with this analysis. Two of Buzz's better freshman were Todd and Davante. Todd was effective but inefficient his freshman year and Davante saw limited playing time because of his conditioning. But it's worth remembering that Duane and Cheatham played in a much different situation than most of Buzz's players did though.

IIRC, we were discussing some recruit or another who was still a freshman or sophomore in high school. Someone made a comment along the lines of "I'm really excited about this kid." Willie's response was something like "The only 14 year old worth getting excited about would be 14 year old Kate Upton." Many were understandably sceeved out.

Pretty sure most people had Kalif Young to MU on Crystal Ball

Todd Smith is a dead giveaway. Recruits start following him when they commit, even before officially announcing. That's the key one I look for.

Yep as per tweet this AM
No idea if this article has any merit at all, and it's from a MSU blog, but it lists the reasons why Tillman will pick MSU. That said, the one sentence that stands out to me and reaffirms my beliefs is this: Tillman has taken his final visits and it's believed that the Spartans are the program to beat while Marquette is close behind and Purdue is third
If it's not MSU, I think it'll be Marquette.

6-3 G Prentiss Hubb Washington DC

Hmmm...thought I'd check out Todd Smith's twitter...unfortunately I haven't checked it for awhile...so I have no frame of reference for when this follow started...but he is following Xavier Tillman...and not French or any other uncommitted targets...he is also following John and Cain if you're curious.
I'm not saying it's a #donedeal but it does stand out to me. Plus, Tillman has to keep my birthday-visit-commitment streak in tact. So there's that, too!
Edit: I crosschecked Xavier Tilliman's follower list and he also has the MSU strength coach following him. So we're back to square one.
Where's Ron Paul?
Joey is still No. 1. 4-star Hubb from DC also a good pick up.
Fellow warriors. Sorry I am in Tokyo. Took JAL from ORD to Narita (on Wednesday) and I have horrible jet lag. I have not called anyone and probably wont. Did get text that wojo and stan both got a call, but no details to share. But as I said before I think the player should have the right to announce his decision. I still think it was a 50/50, but in the end there is only one winner. If Mom had the final choice I would say 80/20 MU. I think she wants X to get a little farther away. But I honestly don't know what was decided.
Will have to try to stay up tonight (it is Friday here) to check messages and maybe have a couple of fingers of Pappy Van winkle FR-20 if a celebration is in order. Or to drown my tears. Either way I win.
Thanks BD!

Maybe until the 40 or so top 50 guys who haven't committed do, but in the final rankings? No way. Unlikely we'll be in the top 25. But we needed bigs, and if Tillman comes to MU (unlikely IMHO) we'll have 3 good ones and a project - and a very successful class.
Marquette just got a Crystal Ball pick from Andrew Slater, Duke Insider. Might be irrelevant. But it's close enough to announcement time that maybe it's not.
Slater has a pretty good track record. With about 12 hours to the announcement, that could actually be significant.

Most likely come from the inside. So one tells someone and says don't tell anyone and it goes from there.

Right, but for him to change his pick as people have been worried about, he would have to believe it started from the school he chose. Just saying that may not be the case.

A) anytime you hold up Bob Knights actions as the example of 'it's happened' you need to rethink your approach - plus, that was decades ago
B) one of 11 predictors on one recruiting site does not a leak equal. hell, there's probably been more time and thought put into this change on Scoop than the predictor put into his change.
C) y'all need to relax

Just a lot of anxious energy until 11:50.
There's been no leak. Why are we discussing a leak? Even if a flood of last-second predictions comes before the announcement (like what happens 80% of the time), do you really think a guy will change the course of his life over like 100 people knowing where he's going pre-decision? Come on.

No, if he doesn't choose Marquette it is because Izzo told the Duke beat writer to change his crystal ball vote last night to Marquette in exchange for future inside information - knowing
full well that the leak would be perceived to come from Wojo due to his weekly Thursday night call with Coach K that is scheduled just before Coach K's weekly call with the Duke writer.
X being a fellow that values trust above all woke up and changed his school choice because of the breach of trust. I mean he didn't have any other choice seeing how the circumstances above played out...
SMH
He's informed the coaches already. He isn't changing his mind. Simply put, the coaches have no reason to leak anything.
One school knows for sure. The other two may know it's not them but maybe they don't know which one got the commitment.
This may be one of the few times a commitment doesn't leak early.

Think about it this way....
If X has already picked MU, there's a 0.0001% chance he's going to change his mind at the last minute because of a leak or internet rumor (irrespective of source).
If X has already picked MU and there is no leak or internet rumor, the chance of him changing his mind last second doesn't just approach, but is in face absolute zero.

With all the excitement here, you would think we signed Maurice Lucas or Jim Chones. Just think back in the day if there was an internet. For Al, out of sight, for Hank
good and bad, for Rick good and bad and then Deane and Piano Player, this would have been Hiroshima for years! I remember on Lucas commit there was like a small nothing article in the Journal, and when I saw Larry McNeal the first time, I thought he might be Irish, guess I was wrong! How life has changed.

Why would a leak change a player's mind?
Player who wants to make his own announcement could feel betrayed by a coach who lets it leak out early.

Assuming Tillman told all the coaches, if a leak happens, it doesn't mean it's the school he chose leaking it.
I'm guessing Xavier Tillman is 50x more mature than Bobby Knight ever was.
What I'm hearing is that if Tillman chooses anywhere but Marquette, Trump will say it was rigged.

My roommates asked me why I was laughing so hard. Trying to explain scoop to the Brits is one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do.
MSU Insider just posted this on the Spartan board:
was told by a source in regards to Xavier Tillman, a senior four-star power forward at Grand Rapids (Mich.) Christian, to "follow the lead of his last official visit."
The 6-foot-8, 230-pound Tillman visited Marquette last weekend with his mother. A separate source added that Tillman's mother was very impressed with the plan the Marquette coaching staff has in place for Tillman.
Keep in mind, Michigan State is still in great standing with:
-- Brian Bowen, a senior small forward at La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere School.
-- Nojel Eastern, a senior guard at Evanston (Ill.) Township
-- Brandon McCoy, a senior at San Diego (Cali.) Cathedral Catholic
Tillman ranks as the No. 89 overall in the 247Sports Composite.

I think most had given up hope before the announcement, especially given the rumored girl friend situation. I also think that Xavier would have been a good get for us given our roster for next year, but since we have Theo John in the fold, it was not a desperate must get. Xavier would have been nice and could have rebounded and scored near the hoop, etc. Would have been real nice. But on offense he definitely was not a stretch 4.
French may have more upside on Offense (very uneducated opinion, just from a couple of videos). But for some reason, I'm not sure that we get French at this point, given the delay since his visit and seemingly waiting to see what happened with Xavier (depending on who wanted the delay, French or MU).
Wish all the best to Xavier. From what read, his family is really behind him and MSU/Izzo is a great place for his talents.
If MU does have a chance with French, they are looking at a Montrez Harrel type player with a seven foot wingspan. A big bad boy to rule the boards.
I am sure Tillman would have been a fine addition to the MU program, but a high rising player such as French will undo the missing out of Tillman. Let's hope and see what happens in next few days.

French is a big boy. He'll make the best decision for him based on the available information at the time he makes a decision. As of today the likelihood that he commits to MU goes up by definition. I wouldn't worry that his visit was a whole 3 weeks ago. If he wants to play for SLU or UMass that'll be his choice.

Ok so at what point do you think they shouldn't be given a ceremony? Should a three star? Non top 100 4star? If they all can have it isn't it essentially a participation trophy, which I believe you've advocated against in the past (my bad if you haven't)

How would it be essentially a participation trophy? If you worked hard enough to be awarded a full scholarship for a college education, even if it's for one of the worst teams in whatever sport it is, you're still one of the best players at your age in your sport in the entire country. Celebrate your huge success however you want to, you earned it.

Urban Prep in Chicago is a all-male charter high school in Englewood that is 85% low-income, and it sends 100% of its graduates to college - many on full-ride academic or need-based scholarships.
They have hat ceremonies for every senior once he decides on a school. It is a nice way to show that you can get out of the 'hood even if you aren't an elite athlete.

I'm not an advocate of participation trophies, but I view this like a birthday party. Personally, I don't really celebrate my birthday, certainly not with a party. But if someone else wants to, I wouldn't begrudge that.
MUFANNY, you asked what the word was in Grand Rapids. I don't have a vast array of sources. The ones I do have always thought it was going to be Sparty. One of the reasons I said I never bet against Izzo. Early in the process, I alluded to a contentious custody battle involving X's parents. His father ended up with custody and X ended up transferring between local high schools because of it. I was not filled with optimism when I heard that his mother possibly favored MU. So, mildly disappointed, but not remotely surprised.

Thanks. Once I found out about the girlfriend situation I figured it would be hard to compete.
I would not be surprised if two years from now X shows up on our doorstep as a transfer after being recruited over.
Also I think we have a dialogue with his teammate the point guard Duane Washington Jr. who has a lot of upside. So this was all worth it.

I'm not an advocate of participation trophies, but I view this like a birthday party. Personally, I don't really celebrate my birthday, certainly not with a party. But if someone else wants to, I wouldn't begrudge that.
Apparently you don't appreciate how big a deal it is to go to college if you grew up in Englewood. It would be a participation trophy if this were going on at New Trier, but not here.

Does anyone find it strange that the Crystal Bowel was changing this morning to MU, and yet it didn't happen? What was convincing people that he was coming here?
I wonder if anyone here thinks the crystal bowel is a marketing tool.

No, not strange. Understand what the Cristal bowel is. A marketing tool / gimmicky game. It worked again today, as designed.

I think you misunderstood my intent. Maybe I did a poor job of explaining. I am not an advocate of participation trophies, however I don't feel going to college is a participation trophy. It is something worth celebrating.
Where I referenced myself, I don't celebrate much. We don't really celebrate birthdays, holidays, or have parties for much of anything. However if you have something you feel is worth celebrating, such as said birthday, holiday, or going to college, I think it's perfectly warranted and see no problem with that.

If we can get to the point where MSU cast-offs are seeing us a good place for quick PT, we will have arrived. Sign. Me. Up.
Teal? I certainly hope so.

Nicely done.

Is it a participation sweater vest or did I really earn it? Maybe I'll have a ceremony either way
Depends. Are you a three-star? An non top-100 four-star?
