Not to announce new coach- but to provide an update on coaching search
Via Homer
What would the point of that be?
Oh well. Shutting it down for the night. See you tomorrow all.
Seems like a waste of time. What can Cords really say? He won't comment on names of people he has interviewed or eliminated most likely. If he is giving a time-frame for hiring a coach he could do that with a press release. Hmmmm
Seriously? A presser just to update everyone? Never heard of such a thing
They don't hold press conferences to give updates. That would be ridiculous. They couldn't say anything about anything
BS. They're announcing.
Who provides an update on a coaching search??
Gotta give Shaka some time to stay incognito to break the news to his players and staff. If they said it were an announcement there'd have to be a good chance the media would report something.
#naivety
Jeff Borzello on Twitter said same thing few mins ago....the wait continues
Ok. This signals that national press leaks will be starting soon
Think this is bad news for Shaka - if they had him they wouldn't care if the anticipations builds. If it's not him, they want to throw cold water on the rumors to avoid the Howland announcement sounding like a fart.

Has any school ever done this...ever?
Could it be to announce a new AD?

I doubt they'll address any rumors
If you're telling me there is a 2:00 pm presser...then that's the time we finally get a coach. No way Cords calls the media together to give an "update." Update what??? He can't reveal names....can't discuss circumstances. That makes zero sense.
So now we know....tomorrow is the day.

Why would they even acknowledge "rumors." Schools don't discuss their jilted lovers, unless it's a coach who left the team (a la Crean or Buzz). They're not going to say who turned them down.
Could be to say they believe the search will take several weeks and they have a crack team working on it right now. :)

Might make some sense, but you'd think they could do that without a press conference. But perhaps they think it would be a good strategy to make an impending Howland hire look as good as possible.

That's the best case scenario.
Worst case- their top choices have turned them down and they're scrambling.
IF MU does something so stupid, and comes out and says we have a national search and "this is going to take time" and "we have no deadline, we'll make the right decision when it's time", this board will blow up.
Just sign Howland and get this train moving.

They are announcing at 2PM tomorrow, the new coach....
only thing it could be. The make it as an update now to throw press off the sent digging. Nobody announces a coaching search press update ahead of time.
You don't accelerate the prez hiring announcement so you can have a presser the next date to update people that "the process is on-going and we're trying"
Keep the faith

You cannot blame MU for a bunch of unconfirmed media speculation and the collective hysteria of people on message boards.
This is not Cords' first rodeo, if he's going to talk about something publically, it's going to be something of substance.

No kidding. The press conference may be set and to protect the integrity of communication between an incoming coach and about to be former players....especially in light of the clusterfrack of social media on Monday, they say it is to discuss the status of the search process. Then, when all are ready (tomorrow), they proudly announce the status of the search process is closed and we are pleased to introduce the new head basketball coach at Marquette University....who may or may not be present depending on how tight the timeline is for closing loose ends at former program. Chillax.
So, hopefully the word does not leak from UW Stout where we found our new coach (kidding of course)

"To discuss the status"... Doesn't mean the status is not, "so please meet our new coach,..."
You either have a coach or you don't. There's nothing positive to be had by calling a press conference to say you're still looking - that's blog fodder at best. If it takes another week, let Scoop be riled up for a week, but don't go out there and announce it. It's not like there can be a Q&A. The only positive thing that can happen is the coach is announced.

There is no way this is positive, if true. Most likely means they lost out on both top candidates. Best case if that is true is they are after someone still playing.

Which is Archie Miller or Tony Bennett. So even if the faintest of implications is given that this is the case, it will just make the firestorm circle around them, right before their games...that's how you hook em.
So, if we have not landed Shaka, then it is safe to say that he played MU. Time to move on.

Jason King and Paint Touches (through a retweet of JK) mentioned Cuonzo Martin. If that's the case, can someone enlighten me on why he'd be chosen over Howland?
They are just going to name Wainwright as the interim coach for next season as the search continues.
This is... not good. If the media announcement details are factual ("NOT" announcing a head coach), then, this can't be anything good. With Wake already open, and certainly other openings to come, MU shouldn't be dragging their feet. Hoping for greatness, expecting disappointment. Awesome.

Not sure why this surprises anyone- while you can question the rationale for actually calling a presser, the reasons why one would make sense, It seems to be many folks opinion that MU has been hampered in its ability to sign a coach because it did not have a pres or AD; they moved up the pres announcement to address that, but it's clearly speculation at this point any deals were contingent on doing so; in all likelihood they did it just to get back some semblance of cred; I hope they have something close, but I think it's more likely at this point they are still searching
This is a horrible idea, if they are gonna have a presser to say they are still searching, it means Shaka said no and that Howland asked for too much money. Don't announce anything until you have a coach. Dumbo move.

Just respect the process.

They are just going to name Wainwright as the interim coach for next season as the search continues.
I heard the coaching pool will be stacked next year
I have been too busy the past 24 hours to spend too much time reading all the threads on Scoop, especially weeding through all the BS (although some is quite entertaining).
Would someone mind providing an update on this 2pm press conference. Is it actually still scheduled, and what on God's green earth is a press conference accomplish if we have not made a hire?
Something like this??
Cords: Well, Marquette nation, as you know, Buzz Williams took the VT job last Friday. It is now 6 days later, and we still do not have a men's basketball coach. Rest assured, we are working on it. (End of presser)
What does that accomplish other than basically state that their first few options are either not interested or not yet willing to committ one way or another? I feel this will just make the speculation more rampant.
Obviously I hope SS or BH is announced at this presser, if it is still happening, because if not, I just don't understand the purpose.

Yep, you're caught up.
I think MU is hoping to announce. SS. That is why they sent Doc Rivers, Dr Lovell, and Dick Strong to make him an offer in person.

Has this actually been confirmed, or are we still relying on the PrepBullseye twitter account that said SS to MU was virtually done on Monday?

I really don't think if this flight happened that Doc is on it. He might talk to Shaka but he's not making a trip. The Clippers played in New Orleans last night and Dallas tonite...not really a lot of time to go on a recruiting trip ;D
Q: have you made an offer to any candidates?
A: I can't comment on that.
Q: how many candidates are you focusing on?
A: we feel we have an appropriate pool of possible candidates we are looking at.
Q:do you have a timetable?
A: no, as long as it takes to find the right fit.
Q: Have you had discussions with Shaka Smart?
A: I can't comment on any specific potential candidates.
Q: there are reports you met with Ben Howland, can ou comment in that?
A: I can't comment on any specific potential candidates.
Q: Are the any candidates that have been eliminated from consideration?
A: I can't comment on any specific potential candidates.
Q: How many candidate have you spoken with since Buzz resigned?
A: I can't comment on that.
They will describe in general the process, who from MU is involved, and that's about it. I wouldn't be canceling any meetings or conference calls.
With any luck, he'll ask that we respect the process.
