Title: Creighton game thread
Post by: real chili 83 on February 19, 2014, 06:47:06 PM
Time to finish strong at the expense of Creighton.

The BlueJays will suck tonight.  :o

Look for big nights from Jake, Ox, and Derrick.

Predicing an 18 point win for MU.

Go WARRIORS!!!!!!!!!

Starters the same.

I'd be happy to give more viewership to Fox/FS1 for picking up the Big East and all...but when there isn't a Big East game on it's NASCAR or UFC.  Couldn't pay me to watch either.

Derrick 6, Jake 5...that used to be two games of scoring.

When Otule is in, don't sag off shooters at all.  Make them challenge him inside.

They are 7 for 9 and 5 for 6 from three.  No way, but MU can't keep doubling on defense.

MU needs every point and they missed basically 3 free throws.

CU
62% from field.  7 for 13 from three
12 assists to MU's 5, due to double teaming by MU and CU passing to open man.
13 personal fouls on CU

MU 43%, 1 for 7 from three (14%)
10 for 17 from free throw line, including frontend miss by DWil.  Thats 8 to 9 points left on court.

Jamil is 2 for 8, 0 for 3 from three
Jake is 3 for 8.
All others shooting great.

Get them in foul trouble, make free throws, stop the threes and start making some threes.

I guess we have different definitions of a "game changer." I consider a game changer to be an elite player, someone has has the ability to take over a game and can carry his team for stretches. Not someone who contributes to wins a handful of times over the course of a season. I will say that his performance in the first half last week was what I am referring to. However, it was only for a half and the only time this year where I would classify him a game changer.

And Jamil is safe at third base on defense.  McD wide open 3.

MU getting in serious, serious foul trouble.  Thats five already.

Get it close, momentum and then missed shots.  Not working so far.

Creighton reminds me of Detroit Catholic Central 1976 state championship team, shooting 3 pointers like they were layups ( of course they didnt have the three point line back then), we can't give them any space at all.

CU is 13 for 14 from the line.  CU in bonus at 14 minute mark.

MU is 14 for 21.

CU actually has more fouls called than MU, but second half not even close.  Could get uglier, especially with Otule, Juan and DWil in game at same time.

This is a frustrating game - but mad props to Creighton.  They are an extremely well-coached team.  Every one of their players on the court is a threat to shoot.  As a basketball fan, I really enjoy watching them play.

For us, it has been the same story for the season - and that's not a negative.  The team has a lot of players with noticeable weaknesses, and Buzz has done his best trying to mix and match (mostly favoring defense) to get the most out of them.  There is no go-to-guy.

Season's not over by a long shot, I hope the team flips the switch soon (hopefully tonight) and kicks things into high gear.

watch the game. otule was outplaying gardner on both ends tonight. gardner is a HUGE defensive liability against creighton

mcdermott is an insane match-up--and the team does a great job forcing us to switch into total mis-matches, and as soon as you do, he makes you pay--post up the smaller guy, take the three on a big afraid he will dribble drive, and dribble drive on anyone too tight on him.

once jwil was in foul trouble, we couldn't come close to a good one on one match-up

I feel bad for D. Wilson. Knowing you gotta play 40 minutes without a break is alot to ask.
If No one on the bench is serviceable enough to at least get him a 5 min blow a night.
We are gonna be in serious trouble come big east tournament time. Not even lottery picks can play 40 min a night. The kid plays with heart but has No help.

In most games it's because we focus on denying the paint. We are so good at 2P defense that teams have to jack up a bunch of threes.

In this game it's because that is Creighton's entire game.

Wragge was 6 for 8 from three and was second coming of Steve Novack.  MU 2 for 11.

MU was 20 for 36 from ft line, with two frontend misses (55%).  How can that happen after the Xavier game and close to 90%?????????

Jamil had a rough night all round. ( 4 for 11) Especially on d with McD.  An NBA player against a mediocre college player.  Not even close.

Never seen a team this year backoff of DWil like CU did tonight.

Needed that home win for bid and momentum, but didn't happen.  Run the table.

Yes, CU will be bad next year.  Very bad, like Butler this year.  They lose alot of players.

I'll be happy when this CU team gets sent home in March.

Could be shockingly early. They won't be able to keep up this hot shooting night after night in the NCAA. One slightly off night of shooting and they're back to NE.

Hope they continue winning and shooting lights out until then. There'll be a lot of hype going into the tourney and easy money to be made for those who bet against them. Will love to see all the brackets busted due to people thinking this team has a legitimate chance at a seriously deep run.

No knock on Derrick but to see his Defender at the Free Throw line all night when hes behind the 3 point line with the ball.

Says we dare you to shoot. I mean its literally 4 on 5 on offense and when you playing against the best scorer in the nation. You cant expect to win. When thats what his team has to defend.

I don't think I saw anything changed from the point that Marquette was down 5 with 7 and change to go that could be attributed to coaching. Our plan got us to a legitimate chance with 7 to go. McDermott proceeded to go bananas and lead CU on an 8-2 run and MU simply couldn't come back. Unless buzz is telling Derrick to have his back to the ball or mayo to allow his man to shoot open floaters I'm not sure how you pin this on buzz.

Cause we played Butler, Seton Hall, and Xavier.  Want to compete with Creighton and Villanova, you need a point guard that drains threes when he has six feet of open room and the ball and who hits better than 2-7 from the line.  Also need a star big who makes more than two field goals and can play adequate defense, a star wing who shoots better than 4-11, attempts more than three free throws and plays adequate defense, and a shooting guard who gets more than four points when playing the bulk of the last 36 minutes.  Back to the trend - we'll hear all about Derrick, but he's one of a dozen problems.
