Two threads were started on this
minutes a couple of hours apart, and the other one took off, and this one just sat for five days. Evidently, Avenue Commons thought that this thread was much more recent.

Too bad he lacked the patience to stick with Marquette.
First Christopherson, now McKay. We're turning into a feeder program for Iowa State.
Ha. Ames truly is the Island of Misfit Toys.
Hoiberg continues to land the transfers.
I like Iowa State, and I've always liked Hoiberg but this smells funny. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he was talking to McKay before he decommitted. No proof...it just don't smell right.

I don't think this smells funny in the slightest. McKay is not the type of player you risk your reputation or your program over. He is only going to give you a yr and a half and he wasn't going to start for MU. Why risk it? I would not be surprised to find out that McKay reached out to see if there was still interest and that got the ball rolling again.
I think it is better for all parties involved that McKay found another place to play. I watched the dunk contest commentary online and I was not a fan of his. He gave STJr looks of disgust, contempt, and grabbed the mike away like it was his toy that he did not want to share. I was not surprised to learn after that that he decided to transfer because he didn't want to play out of position. I know I am judging this off of one video but it was the first impression so it sticks.
Does iowa st. do well come tourney time? Do they even get invited? Well at least we know McKay wont get in to trouble, heck what is there to do there in the middle of corn country? Maybe flip cows for fun?

Everybody knows they don't flip cows there. They

Cows aren't easy to tip over, and a failed attempt wakes the cow and freaks it out, so it starts mooing, and then all the other cows wake up and start mooing and coming over to see whats wrong, and suddenly you're surrounded by big freaked out cows making lots of noise and the lights come on in the house and... well I advise against the practice.

They don't have many cows in Iowa....they have pigs.
And Hoiberg has done well at ISU...getting them to the round of 32 the last two years and played real competitively v. OSU last year. Ames is a real tough place to recruit to and he has done it by getting a number of transfers. Korie Lucious finished his career out there.
Iowa State will make the tourney again this year, but probably be in that neighborhood again where they have to play a real tough opponent in the 2nd round, unofficially on the round.
Their team has been doing very good under Hoiberg. They should be in the tournament again this year. They should had won the game against OSU in the tournament last year. Also, they kicked the domers butt in the tournament last year(76-58) ;D

I don't think it smells funny at all -- it makes perfect sense to me.
Iowa State has had a nice pipeline of Milwaukee/WI kids because of T. J. Otzelberger, who played at Thomas More and UW-Whitewater. The guy is known as one of the hardest working recruiters out there and he knows Milwaukee/Wisconsin well. I have no doubt he knew of McKay and had a relationship because he knows all of the WI kids. Otzelberger left ISU last summer for U of Washington to assist Lorenzo Romar. He's had a few offers for low D1 head coaching slots, but they weren't the right fit. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as a head coach in the next few years at some mid-major. My gut is Otzelberger had ties with McKay for the last few years, even through high school, and this was an easy fit because he knew ISU well. Otzelberger and Hoiberg are still friends (Hoiberg went to his wedding even after he left for UW) and Hoiberg knows Otzelberger eventually wants to be a head coach, so there was no animosity with him leaving. It wouldn't surprise me if Otzelberger reached out to McKay and told him ISU was still a great fit. A friend helping a friend. The kids love Otzelberger.
OK FreeportWarrior, then why would he say Iowa St. was a better option for McKay than staying at MU?
Yeah I see the comment on flipping cows was a little off. TIP the cows is what they do in Iowa. Maybe the pigs if they are really wasted. ;D

OK FreeportWarrior, then why would he say Iowa St. was a better option for McKay than staying at MU?
McKay wanted out first because of perceived playing time and he didn't want to play the 5. I think both would have worked themselves out, but kids today want the rewards before putting in the hard work, and as we know, Buzz is all about putting in the work. Another thing I'm hearing is that McKay knew/thought that Taylor, Jr. was going to get his minutes regardless of his play because of his ties with Mac Irvin Fire/Simeon. There is/was an understanding that those IL coaches expect Taylor to play, and if he doesn't, don't expect to them to ever send players MU's way. No one will ever admit it, but it's the subtle underbelly of high-level AAU ball. It reminded me of the Tyshawn Taylor "pressure" Hurley applied to MU to let TT out of his LOI -- let him out or you will never get another one of my players. Certainly unprovable, but with both kids playing well and all things being equal, it would be easy to lean to Taylor to keep everyone happy. I'm not saying this is Buzz's MO, I'm saying that a young kid, hearing these things and thinking he's busting it in practice and Taylor is getting the reps/favortism could have spooked him into thinking he would never get a fair shake. Perception or reality, we will never know.
So, in answer to your question -- McKay wanted out because of the perceived situation regardless of where he would transfer to. Iowa State had been recruiting him hard for years and he was familiar with them, so it was an easy move.

I think McKay was worried about minutes...in fact I have heard as such. But I don't think that he was going to lose minutes to Taylor because of Mac Irvin and Simeon. I think those minutes would have been well earned on the floor. In seeing how Buzz does things, I would be shocked beyond belief if that were the case.
Man up and earn it. Let your play leave no room for discussion or debate about minutes. That's how its' done.
If you can't do that, good luck to you wherever you end up.

I'm not saying McKay was actually going to lose minutes to Taylor because of Mac Irvin and Simeon. I'm saying McKay
thought he would. Definitely Buzz rewards hard work and results, but I heard that McKay didn't think he was ever going to get a fair shake because Taylor was "his guy" (true or not) -- that is why he left. While it may or may not be in play here, I'm not naive enough to think that there is zero pressure to play kids based on outside forces. And I'm not talking about playing a kid that is substantially less talented or productive just because of where he came from. I'm talking about situations where you could never second guess a decision -- a situation where playing either kid makes sense. That is the real world.
McKay and Company's perception and reality don't match. Buzz's track record proves that. Marquette is a national player on the recruiting front. Buzz's approach is reflected strongly in his religious/faith approach to life. He has refused to play games on the recruiting front and walked away from highly rated players and their follows who would bend the rules.

Appreciate the post and insight. Certainly can believe all of the above, yet hard to think McKay would really think it through that far - the Simeon/Mac Irvin connection. I'd suspect others were in his ear telling him that/planting that seed...and who knows if those were just those in his inner circle, or perhaps some people tied to Iowa State...but..I would bet money that there was some negative recruiting/tampering going on here...as opposed to McKay just thinking that whole elaborate scenario out on his own...especially:
Given Buzz's track record with JUCO's, and Buzz being a JUCO himself - it should have been abundantly clear to McKay that if anything Buzz has a soft spot to JUCO's more than anything else. Hell, his JUCO's are the ones that have gone on to the NBA - not his high school recruits.

Definitely not big enough and good point that if I had bought this morning, it would have been a non-starter. Facebook I got right, waited and got in at the low $20's while the IPO guys got hit early days. Of course, I was stupid enough to buy Apple at $700. You win some you lose some.

I still have them. I try very hard not to get caught up in the buzz, but it was a buzz buy for sure. Had ideas of it hitting $1K, but it went the other way. I kept thinking despite it being a good company, the world's consumers are going to want cheaper, quality products and many will go for Samsung, etc because it is good product in its own way. Tablet dominance will shrink as well. All points to NOT buying the stock, but I did anyway. So you're right it is a good company, very good products, but with people looking for cheaper stuff, Apple doesn't play in that sandbox with the same regularity.
