I have to say, I normally hate these type of rings. But that one is actually pretty cool. A little less garish than most.
Maybe I'm naive to this. But since when do the players get a ring for an elite 8 appearance and did other teams follow suit?

The rings also say Big east champions on top, maybe that is what the ring is for

Players got S16 rings each of the previous years, and I'm confident most if not all other teams do this as well.
That ring's pretty bad ass.

It's not unusual for teams to get rings or other jewelry after the season. I remember my soph basketball coach always wearing a watch he received for being the manager on an NIT team in the mid-80s.
That ring is Swweeet!

Makes you wonder why so many here got their undies in a bundle then when another school did it last year...a school coached by one of our former coaches.
For the record, I have no problem with the rings, whether it is Duke giving them out, MU, IU, UCLA, or whatever. But some people get flipped out for banners, rings, etc, but typically its all about who is giving them out and that's where I have find the hypocrisy.
Others may disagree, like this guy

A little less garish is the operative statement. This is still over the top, bordering on the tasteless. I got a class ring from HBS. Interestingly, they offered only the signet style. There is something to be said for understatement.

Let me know when you find any coach anywhere (let alone a blue blood) who has an hour long net cutting ceremony after a home loss that clinches a conference championship tie. Please, please don't give us that "they're all douches" crap. TC is a world class douche, most others only occasionally dabble in that area.

It's the size of the ring. Regardless of intricacies or design, huge rings will always be over the top, but they've carved out a nice niche in collegiate and professional sports and if you have one, style is an afterthought, they are still bad ass because of what they represent.

Plenty of threads on that topic, we're talking about rings and the hypocrisy here by a number of you that were hot and bothered that a school dare to give out sweet 16 rings until they were reminded that MU does the exact same thing.
Two standards for some....fun to watch it unfold.

You recall incorrectly, it was the ring.
Then people changed their tune when they found out MU did it, so the new outrage was that they have them out at a public event. When it was shown MU did the same thing at Midnight Madness, the outrage tune changed again.
Who actually pays for those things? The NCAA decreed players cannot have cream cheese with their pre-game bagels as that would constitute improper compensation. How then does jewelry fit into that oversight construct? The inconsistency of the NCAA is mind boggling and borders on the lunatic.

You are infamous for digging up old threads. I'd like to see the threads about rings. Personally, I have zero problem with them. Something for these kids to cherish and brag about when they're old and gray. The newly constructed display case, however, was atrocious. Do they get another this year?

I don't think anybody begrudges the kids getting rings. My only beef with the rings is that they are garish to the point that even Imelda Marcos would blush. But Crean's celebration was over the top and, not surprisingly, turned into a Tom Crean I-love-me fest. It is never about anyone but him. Unless it involves the Harbaughs which then unleashes all manner of inadequacies and bizarre humility that turn the moment into an exercise in shameless pandering.
The Air Force officer is taught that leadership asks the question, "How can I help these men?" The Bronzed Beast always asks, "How can these men help me?" What is shocking, though, is that he doesn't even attempt to hide his grasping, self-serving, mercenary avarice.

The old bagel spread thing was an interpretation based on a rule that said kids could be provided with fruit, nuts and bagels at any time. Bizarre, but I'm not sure it was really an "excess compensation" concern.
There are separate rules for "awards". Depending on the type of award it can be given to a student-athlete (SA) by an institution, a conference or the NCAA.
In the case of MU's rings, I believe* the max value for awards they gave out this week was $375 per SA. You can give out awards for winning a conference championship (value max of $325), but those schools participating in the NCAA tourney had a $375 max.
It appears the rings doubled as Big East champs / Elite Eight rings... my understanding is that you cannot combine values (i.e., $325 + $375 = $700)... so I would think the rings were $375 or less and paid for by MU.

Thanks for the insight. I read recently that the Super Bowl ring Putin pinched from Robt Kraft was worth more than $20M. Given the price of gold these days the $375 ceiling means diamond chips, glass, and gold plate for student athletes. Still, quite an heirloom for the lads.

Kind of funny from the guy who brings up his accomplishments/life path in every post. We get it, you were in the Air Force and have a HBS ring.
As for the rings, I don't think a Sweet 16 team should get one, but the players love them and deserve a piece to keep for the ages.
They may be gaudy but I think they are actually pretty clean in style and well designed. They serve a very different purpose than something like a HBS ring. A HBS ring is usually worn by alumni trying to show they are in the club at professional events. These rings are meant to be put on display and not really worn. If they are worn, it is usually at an alumni event and its not like you don't see obnoxious 50-year-olds in blue/gold striped pants.

Is that right? Is that why HBS grads wear signet rings?? Thanks for clarifying that for me. By the way, what are these "professional events?" I wouldn't want to wear in an inappropriate situation or, heaven forbid, be underdressed or "out of uniform" at a "professional event."

All I'm saying is there is a difference between a ring from a business school and a sporting event. You made the comment of the HBS ring and comparing the two. I'm saying that's obviously a bad comparison. You either thought it was a good comparison or you brought up a HBS ring for absolutely no reason.
