Title: The Tanned One
Post by: dgies9156 on February 08, 2013, 09:42:36 AM
All right guys, is it time to let up on the Tanned One?

I read on the boards how much everyone loves to hate Tommy Crean. I was angry too and thought he was a bit of an a*s when he took the job in Indiana. Like many of the posters in the years since, I was scared about the condition of our program. And, when we see Indiana ranked Number 1, as they will be until Monday morning, we legitimately wonder if that could have been us.

That said, it's time to move one. I, for one, had serious misgivings when we hired Buzz. I was fearful we had a roll-up of Mike Dukiet and Mike Deane into our new coach. I was sooooooooooooo wrong! I like what we have. In fact, I've come to like what we have more than what we had back when the Tanned One was here. I think Buzz is building something special and although the jury is still out on whether we hang NCAA Champions Banner #2 in the Bradley Center, I'm confident we're moving that way.

So let the tanned one go. He's still a bit of an a*s. The best thing we can do now is ignore the Tanned One -- after all, he has to live in Bloomington, for heaven's sake! And who can stand THAT much red (maybe that's conditioning to hate the Red Rodent!)

Agree with you but...

Do we really need to start a thread on this? This is just bringing it up again and will probably turn into a 15 page thread...

You're pissing in the wind.

There are a handful of posters, a couple handfuls if you include all of warthog's IDs, who will never let it go because Crean was mean to them once.

Schadenfreude over a guy who has a top 5 team and another top 10 recruiting class coming in next year?
Yeah, we sure showed him.

Do Illinois fans root for Self?   Do Kansas fans root for Roy?    Do Sparty, Dolphin, LSU fans root for Saban?   Do Florida fans root for Urban?   Are Wisconsin fans going to root for Bielema?    And if there weren't a couple of sycophantic Joanies on this board still loving their Chachi in Bloominton, I am guessing some of it would go away.

No one is suggesting that they should root for him.  But I am pretty sure those boards aren't full of similar, pathetic posts about a coach that left them five years ago...and is actually doing a good job.

And no one here defends Crean before someone bashes him first.  So you can't blame Chicos for this one.

For chrissakes, Crean is a central figure in five of the first 11 threads on this forum. The dude left five years ago but at times is still the main topic of discussion around here. You think you'd find that on the Illinois, Florida, Kansas, etc. forums?

Also, could you please point out the last time Chicos or any of the other imaginary Joanies started a thread about Crean?

Balderdash.   Listening to sports talk radio in Michigan during December, there was 100 calls saying they were going to have to root for ND for the first times in their life because their loathing of Saban was so deep and so total.    There was not 1 (and believe me, I was listening for it) saying that Sparty nation should forgive and forget and wish Saban well and what a great guy he is and how much he did for MSU.   I am willing to bet if there had been, the following discussion would have made this board look tame.
Crean is a good coach.   He did a lot for MU and I appreciate his time here.   He is not a man without flaws and now that he is no longer MU's burden, they are easier to notice.

I would say that TC brought MU back to where we are now.  Better off with Buzz, but without TC, no DWade, no Steve Novak, at others. no Final Four.  NO job is forever, and Indiana
is probably a bigger opportunity, no one likes how he walked out, but so what, any way you look at it, it was not going to be easy.  We have not missed a beat, had fun and did not have 3
years of bad teams.  The fan base for Indy is insane, I which MU could draw fans like they do.  Do you think MU could draw 17,000 for 3 years as bad as Indy was?

Crean didn't "do" anything to Marquette. To think so is to be blinded by hurt. And if you are firm in your belief that Crean did "do" something to Marquette it has worked out very well for both him and Indiana as well as our program. So why the childish grudges from so many?

And I've never met a fan of any program, basketball or otherwise, that "hates" a former coach who didn't set progress back years except for MU people. Hell, fucking Dukiet gets a longer leash than Crean. That's weird.

Can only speak for myself, and the conversations I've had with people, but I think the reason this topic still exists is because people couldn't say it while he was here. After the Final Four, no one dared say a bad word because they were scared to lose him to another school. He turned off a lot of people with the way he went about things after the Final Four, but MU was in rare air, so nothing was said.

Do I actively follow and root for IU to lose? Nah. But if they do, I get a chuckle out of it.

This forum is not sports talk radio in Michigan.   But we are hardly the only fanbase that says bad things about a coach who left.   And I like Crean.   I just don't think he is above criticism.
So what is fair?    While Crean was at MU and Murf was on this board, there was a frequent debate about Crean's offense and whether or not it effectively used bigs.   I always defended it, citing how Crean used Jackson.   Murf would say the reason Crean couldn't land bigs at MU was because of his offense.   I now see there may have been truth in what Murf said because with a POY candidate in Zeller, Crean's crunch time call was to have Oladipo do a Jerel McNeal imitation.    We had a huge thread citing end of game defense for MU.   Is it not fair to level the same criticisms at Crean that we leveled at Buzz?    I went back and found a thread from 2006 where I said that his in-game coaching was "a work in progress."    Who put you in charge of saying I can't repeat that criticism now?    Why is it wrong for anyone, especially those who were critical of him while he was here, to still be critical of him and revel in instances that reinforce their criticism?

That argument works both ways, right?  You could say that Buzz should have taken us to a Final Four by now, especially if the terrible previous coach did?  You could say if we didn't hire Buzz and hired someone else, we might have gone to a Final Four.  That argument can be used on anything because it is impossible to prove.

What we do know, from Wade himself, is that he connected with the man and that's why he came to MU.  So, would another coach have led him to MU?  Maybe, impossible to know but we can play the what-if game forever if you wish with our current or former coaches.  The facts are, he was here, we did get a Final Four, we did get Novak, we did get Wade, we did get Diener, we did get Wes, Lazar, DJ, JM, etc.  Would we have still gotten them?  Maybe.  Would we have gotten even better players?  Maybe.  Would we have had worse players?  Maybe.  Play this game forever.  You can only go by what actually happened and what the comments were of the players that actually played at MU and WHY they chose MU.

I'll always root against him.  But I don't need to start threads about it.  Just like I will always cheer against KO.  Part of me chuckled when he got canned.

It is alright if some people don't want to cheer for the guy; and it is just fine if people want to.

I'm not sure we need a new thread about it every other week... Maybe we could all keep our Crean feelings to ourselves? :)

And go read why he went to MU.... ::)  It was in an article AGAIN just last week and posted on this board.  He has said over and over and over again why he came to Marquette, but for some reason you refuse to actually listen to him.  Same reason why so many others came to MU, out of their own mouths, but you refuse to listen to them, as if the actual players that played here don't count.  Their beliefs, their reasons for coming, don't count...they are dismissed by you.

http://www.foxsportsflorida.com/01/31/13/Bond-between-Wade-Crean-remains-strong/landing_heat.html?blockID=857067&feedID=10140

Wade and Crean have a unique relationship, one that was born in the summer of 1999 when Wade was a raw prep prospect entering his senior year at Richards High School outside Chicago. After spending three seasons at Marquette (2001-03), Wade said goodbye to the campus when he bolted to the pros in 2003, but his relationship with Crean has remained intact.

"He came into my life when I needed a father figure, a role model,'' said Wade, whose parents had divorced when he was young and whose mother had been a drug addict, of Crean taking him under his wing after he had enrolled at Marquette in the fall of 2000 and was academically ineligible to play as a freshman. "He was somebody I trusted from Day 1. I put all my trust in him . . . He was one of the first men that I was comfortable with telling him that I love him.''

It was funny seeing them together on TV. Made Ox look petite. That guy's a lunk though. Can't move, jump, run, shoot but hey he's massive.

Look at the USF forum and they say the guy's a wasted scholarship.

Agree, it's ok not to cheer for the guy, to each their own. It's the double standard hypocrisy which is the funny part.  Personally, he gave me great memories and the best MU basketball in 30 years...stayed for 9 years, left for a better program and better school which happens to be another alma mater.  So it worked out for me.  Majerus left, I still wanted him to do well.  Deane left, was pleased as punch when he took Wagner and Lamar to the NCAAs.  KO left...well he didn't do anything after he left with one exception at Arizona.  People move on. When Buzz leaves, I hope he continues to have success.  No need being bitter when coaches leave, but I get why some fans do.

Yes, the argument works both ways. All you can really prove/cite are the results and history. You can say "Crean was here and we had Novak, Wade, FF, etc." You can also say "Another coach could have been here and we might have had Novak, Wade, FF, etc." The post I quoted originally is trying to say "If Crean weren't here, we wouldn't have had Novak, Wade, FF, etc" and that's simply not true.

I understand you may hope to believe what you write but the bolded shows you're still stuck.

Hell, fracking Dukiet gets a longer leash than Crean. That's weird.

I really don't think that Dukiet gets a longer leash, its just that there is no disagreement concerning Dukiet.

I would say that TC brought MU back to where we are now.  Better off with Buzz, but without TC, no DWade, no Steve Novak, at others. no Final Four.  NO job is forever, and Indiana is probably a bigger opportunity, no one likes how he walked out, but so what, any way you look at it, it was not going to be easy.  We have not missed a beat, had fun and did not have 3 years of bad teams.  The fan base for Indy is insane, I which MU could draw fans like they do.  Do you think MU could draw 17,000 for 3 years as bad as Indy was?

You are confused.  You seem to think that this thread is about Tom Crean.  Actually, it is about talking about Tom Crean.

The only thing that pisses me off about the Crean thing is the non-Marquette fans it brings to these various threads.  Not talking about guys like Chicos who are Marquette supporters.

I am talking about the smattering of losers who frequent this board talking down the program whenever a Crean bash happens.

Go cheer for your own team.

Rant off. Please continue with the smack talk.....

As an alum who witnessed the beginning of the golden age of basketball during the Al era I am pleased with where we are at present. I wish coach Crean all the success in the world except when he plays MU. If we were in his position which one of us would not jump at a chance to resurrect a storied program like IU. He brought MU back and now with Buzz some of us believe we have a chance at another title. It's a win win for all of us. What is there to complain about?

I'm grateful for what Kevin O'Neill and Tom Cream did for Marquette Basketball.  If Crean hadn't arrived when he did, Marquette would probably be like DePaul is right now.  He was a salesman and was able to recruit and get the students back to going to the games.  I didn't particularly care for how he left, but he did leave for a top-tier job. What gives me an indication about his character was his presser after getting beat by Illinois.  First words that I heard were:  "I don't want to assign blame for this loss, because I don't want to throw anyone under the bus."  By saying that he threw the team under the bus and said I'm not responsible.

Bottom line, I'm happy that Crean coached at Marquette and made us relevant again and even happier that Buzz is here now.
