With regards smartphones Android has a 60% market share compared to Apple's 20%. Only the technologically illiterate waste money on Apple products.

That's why apple makes money. Their products are designed for idiots. Most people are idiots and enjoy the short learning curve.
EDIT: I mean this as a compliment btw. They've been able to identify a market for dependable, easy technology in a stylish package.

Microsoft/Google: We create great technology. Who cares if it is hard to use or how it looks, it requires manuals and training, and most of the features are hidden away and no one knows about them and no one will use them. But it's really cool stuff. If the consumer is to dumb to figure it out, to bad, that is the consumers problem. We create and it's up to the consumer to figure it out and if they can't, well, not our issue.
Apple: We create technology. If the consumer finds it hard to use, that is our problem. We create for the end user/consumer and it should work and they should be able to figure it.
I prefer Microsoft for some things, and used to mock Apple. But, I'm an Apple convert. There is something to be said for stuff that works the way it is intended, without problems, even if a feature or two are left off or they run a little behind at times.
Google/Android has a larger share of the market, but a lot of that is low end/cheaper stuff. Nothing wrong with that, at all, but google gives android away. On a MU board, I'd expect a higher adoption of Apple products than in the general public.
They should have just developed a mobile site that is accessible from either device. "Apps" like these are not necessarily smart because you eliminate half of the marketplace.

Apple is the king of putting out technology that doesn't work as intended...it's just they intend for it not to work perfectly and their following is okay with this and feel like field testers. If anything, Apple is the king at developing a culture among its customers that allows for such errors.

Agreed. Most these apps are pointless and the mobile websites are usually easier to navigate anyway.

I'd honestly be surprised if this was much more than a website with an app wrapped around it to make it App Store eligible.
There is something to be said about the visibility that comes along with being in a more exclusive club of the App Store and Google Play, though.

Too bad Microsoft didn't build cars. Turn the key and get "fatal exception error" or the blue screen of death.
There is a reason most apps are released for iOS first, Apple makes it extremely easy for app developers. Android is unbelievably fragmented and it makes it difficult to develop apps that work correctly across the large number of devices/manufacturers that use Android. It's really not uncommon to release an iPhone app well before an Android app.
Also, people who knock Apple really make me laugh. Apple has completely revolutionized all of our lives. In case none of you remember (not that it was long ago), before the iPhone there really were no smart phones. Sure there were blackberrys but not the same thing, those were phones that received email. The iPhone changed the game. End of story. All Android phones are basically copies of iPhones. You can squawk all you want about a feature here or there that Android might have that iPhone doesn't, but iPhone continues to set the agenda and Android continues to play catch up despite market share. Don't believe me? While Android market share is close to 60%, they are moving in the wrong direction. You will see that share decrease over the next year. iPhone sales have accounted for nearly 50% of smart phone sales in 2012 last I saw. You also are ignoring the tablet market where Apple has a 60% market share. By the way, that is another market that Apple created solely on their own and where everyone else is playing catchup. I was laughing the other day reading iPad 1 reviews calling the iPad a dud, a big iPhone, making fun of the name, predicting miserable sales. Well 70 million sales later I think it's safe to say the iPad is a success.
In the end, I don't care if you choose to have an Android phone, windows phone, blackberry, or whatever. However, stop with the revisionist b.s. that Apple doesn't innovate, they brain wash people, they have inferior products, etc... That's simple blind fanboy speak that comes off as bitter and uninformed. A few Android phones are good, but there are 85% that are garbage. I always know that my iPhone is going to work amazingly well, have cutting edge technology, and be simple, beautiful, and elagent. I also know that I am going to have the most and best apps available because they make it easy and for app developers and they have the best chance of their app being profitable on the iPhone/iPad.

Sounds to me like a new version of windows. Use it (because we told all PC makers that they must install it on all new computers) report the bugs, and we'll fix them. BTW, I am a windows PC user, and I shudder every time a new windows is coming out.

As an android "fanboy" I agree with all stated here except the bolded. I'd argue that it is now ios that is playing catch up with android. Outside of a much more robust app store what features does ios have that are more advanced than android? Don't say Siri. Also, the ios ui is far from elegant. Unified across the board? Yes. Elegant? No.

Haha, Apple is very far behind at this point. Andoid has had 4G phones out for how long?
The "Android is fragmented" argument is moot for an app like the one MU just put out. You aren't going to be concerned about OS fragmentation for an app that has website-ish functionality.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever read. Palm and Blackberry phones were highly functional smartphones well before Apple came out with their iPhone. Apple applied a great touchscreen interface (stolen from Microsoft) to the smartphone for the first time, but that's it. Apple's *true* innovation is the combo of iTunes and the App store. Nobody had done that on such a large scale before and ended up with such a big catalog, but even then it wasn't a brand new idea as you claim.
Everyone in this thread has been pretty level-headed about the iOS v Android thing up until your post. You're very obviously an Apple fanboy.

Ohhhh you know the 4G networks are trash (spotty, and rarely faster than 3G). Apple is just smartly waiting for a strong supporting network before launching a phone into it. As we have seen in the past, as a network's coverage goes, so goes the iPhone reputation.

Because they don't. Weaker computers that cost more. That is inferior.

Just talking about my experiences in the Milwaukee market of the past few years. I wouldnt be surprised if the coverage was very different in larger markets.
And the Apple pricing structure isn't meant for the professional business market that buys 2000 units at once; it's for the upper-middle class home that is willing to pay a premium for, in my view, a superior machine for many tasks.
To each their own I suppose.
On top of all that, I love my sansa player much more than I loved any iPod that I've owned.
I can upgrade my PC easily.
I can buy music without having to use iTunes
I will admit that my mom's iPad is pretty slick, but I haven't really looked at any other tablets since I find them to be pointless considering my smart phone pretty does everything that an iPad can do.

I totally disagree that it's a superior machine since the 4s is a last-generation phone.
That being said, there's no right answer for everyone. If you have a phone that you like and that works well for how you use it, then why in the world would you get a "better" phone? 4G networks are pretty widely available. The iPhone doesn't have 4G because they hold to a pretty strict once per year schedule, and last year the 4G radios were battery hogs. Apple prioritized battery life over network speed. (It also doesn't hurt that using an "old" radio also helped hold costs down for their infamous profit margins).

I have to agree. I don't understand the love or disdain for Apple, but there is some serious revisionist history from Apple haters that completely ignore the fact that Apple was pretty much kaput before Jobs returned in '96. They've always had loyal fans, but that wasn't worth anything without Jobs' strict ethos of simple, high-quality products.
The iPod was far from revolutionary, but it took music players, stripped out the folder-based music management and made them attractive and simple to use.
Apple will never have the most features, but "features" do not make for a better or worse product. It's in the implementation and ecosystem...and Apple does pretty well in that regard.
Quote from: Skatastrophy on June 27, 2012, 07:09:39 AMApple applied a great touchscreen interface (stolen from Microsoft) to the smartphone for the first time, but that's it.
Hardly. Microsoft had no multitouch devices on the market when the iPhone came out. The closest they came was "Surface" (now PixelSense) that was announced in May of 2007, and shipped in 2008. The first iPhone came out in June 2007.
Apple sometimes skates along the cutting edge (Thunderbolt) and sometimes lags behind (4G), but the idea that they never innovate or never copy is silly. Apple's strength is innovating the overall experience (as you said integrating on a grand scale the App Store and iTunes).

Apple has less potential than an equivalently priced PC product.
Lots of restrictions with hardware and software.
However, their design is very good/great, and the usability for the average consumer is very good/great.
For tech savy, high end consumers, it might not be the best product. That crowd wants something they can work with and upgrade. That's not an Apple product.
Apple vs Windows vs Android is like Chevy vs Ford vs Dodge for dorks instead of white trash.

I'd say Apple is competitive, but always at the high end. Can you show where they are not?
So, now a run of the mill laptop is a top of the line computer?

Oh, I'm sorry, explain to me where Apple builds top of the line computers that are priced competitively.
Because they don't. Weaker computers that cost more. That is inferior.
FWIW my family owned only Apple products (starting with a IIgs in 1987) until I begged my parents for a replacement for our Mac.
I can't even comprehend this. Weaker computers? Sure, in 1987.
Next time my PC gets to hot and freezes I'll think of you. Hate them all you want, but they crash less, run on battery infinitely longer (they use much superior metals and materials that allow them, to stay cooler and not waste energy running a fan from 1995), and perform much better with multiple programs open and running.
I don't even own a mac. I don't have the disposable income to justify spending $1000 bucks more. But your overhatred for them is getting ridiculous.

Alright ... let's frame this debate in exactly the way you think it should be discussed. I think most people would agree that Ultrabooks are the hot new segment, but we can look at any product line you'd like.
Maybe you could compare the latest Dell laptop with a 2880 x 1800 screen resolution to the new MacBook Pro? Is that top-of-the-line?
Haha just got an IT Services email from the MU campus saying that they are down due to a hardware failure. Looks like AL is looking down at this board.

My first machine was a //c in 1984. Switched over to PC's exclusively in the early 90's. Hacked my way through college on PC's but bought a Mac in grad school (thank you, Stafford loan). Built an HTPC on Windows a couple years ago. Had an iPhone since it went to 3G.
PC's are superior to Macs on price, accessibility, and utility; Macs are superior on security, stability, and compatibility.
Having a Mac vs. PC argument over a stupid App makes MUScoop inferior to Dodd's site.

If that is your invitation, then why not let me build my own computer like I've been doing for 10 years. I can build a desktop with far superior hardware than you can find by going to your local Apple store for a hell of a lot less money.
As for laptops I will be honest and say I don't know enough to frame an argument. And since pretty much any desktop I build will have better specs than any laptop from any company.
Though I guess I have pretty much strayed from the original argument quite a bit here.

A mustang is faster and cheaper than a mini-van. Doesn't mean it's a better choice for my mom.
Different applications require different solutions.
Apple has great design and simple usability. The trade off is that it's not very versatile or upgradable. Well, some people don't need those features. Just like my mom doesn't need a V8.

But, if you can afford the BMW:
1. it's attractive

3. holds resale value
4. dependable

I would never argue Apple is the perfect solution for everyone (although I do own stock, so start buying folks!). Dollar for dollar you can almost always buy something less expensive. You can go with laminate instead of granite counter tops. They'll both do the trick, although one certainly looks nicer and is higher quality. They both have their uses ... but the idea that granite is wasted money just because you don't care to look at the added value is silly.

Well, in reality, they are made of the same parts. BMW uses the internal combustion engine, 4 tires, independent front suspension, etc. etc.
They just do it different and better than most.
Again, I'm not saying one is clearly "better". Every time I see a BMW or an Apple product, I don't think the person is a "sucker". It might fit their application very well, and that does include some status.

If you build your own computers, then you know there is a difference between various brands of RAM and motherboards. If company X is trying to hit a low price point and uses less-reliable components, while company Y uses top end stuff, both devices end up doing the same thing, but they are clearly not the same machine.
And I'd add that Apple does some neat things with their product development, like single block tooling to keep down on seams and body flex (I know you don't care about laptops, but that's really all I know).
You may not care about fit and finish, in which case, thank god for capitalism that there are other options, but don't knock down those of that care a bit about the craftsmanship.

Apple is in first or second place with regards to most smartphones sold (depending on quarter). Apple rakes in something like 50% of smartphone profits. Users on iOS devices account for 62% of total mobile web browsing. The App Store takes in more than twice that of Google Play.
Android has more devices in the wild.

This leads me to another area of superiority for Apple imo. With Apple you are always assured of a high quality product that will work extremely well and deliver at or beyond expectations. With Android, there are a wide array of areas you need to research to get a product comparable to the iPhone. Who is the manufacturer, how new is the model, which version of Android is it running, what has the manufacturer laid on top of the OS, etc... None of those concerns with an iPhone.

Yes. Elegant? No.
Maybe you're right if you're among the 5% of Android users who have ice cream sandwhich. I never have to worry with my iPhone that I will have the latest version of iOS.

I guess Apple is losing when you look at total market share. However, a lot of Androids market share is low end phones, prepaid phones, etc.. Not sure the profit margin on those but my guess is low. Apple is clearly winning in the tablet market. They are also winning this year in the phone market based on overall growth of sales this year. Apple is certainly winning from a profitiability stand point. Apple shareholders are winning whne you look at stock price. Apple is winning in the court of public interest when you see how heavily covered each of their releases is by the media. They are winning when you look at overall interest in what the next version of the iPhone or iPad will be (no one seems to care about the next version of Android phones).
One last point in Apple's favor and then I will stop unless I see some one else posting complete nonsense. Admitedly this might only be a selling point for heavy Apple loyalists, but Apple does a great job of integrating all of your Apple devices and that looks like an even bigger focus with Mountain Lion and iOS6. So for the people who question why you would ever buy a Mac or iPhone, one answer is that when I have multiple Apple devices I have an ecosystem that allows me to seemlessly share content, messages, etc.. from one device to another.

I definitely am a huge Apple fan. I proudly have an iPhone 4S, iPad 2, Macbook, and iMac. Love them all. However, more than being a fanboy it's very interesting to me to watch Android fanboys. First, they seem to think they are not just as bad as Apple fanboys. They also seem to discount anything Apple does and refuse to recognize anything Apple does as innovative despite Apple's track record of being a game changing company. Finally, they seem to have a very limited definition of what is innovative and what is valuable. For instance, in this thread I've seen how the iPhone was an innovative game changer because:
1. Blackberries and Palms could access the internet (did you ever try this before the iPhone? it was a shitty experience)
2. Touch screens were ripped off from microsoft (really? I don't remember have a Microsoft touch screen device. I guess there might have been some but they clearly had issues that prevented heavy adoption)
Let's see what the iPhone brought to market for the first time:
1. An internet phone that actually gave you the internet in a way that was equivalent to PCs
2. A touch screen not only that worked but one that used gestures intuitive to human nature
3. Apps! Seems like whatever I need now there is an app for that
4. Integration of all my devices - no longer need my phone, iPod, GPS, camera, etc.... Why? Because I have an iPhone
Not only did Apple innovate (even if some of that was improving on things already released) but they wrapped it all up in a package that looks great. Do people feel cooler using Apple devices? Sure, because they do look cool. That doesn't take away from them being great products also.
Bottom line is I don't care what phone you use. I'm sticking with Apple for now. I am more than willing to admit Apple has issues. Price is a big one. They are expensive devices. They don't have some cool features of Android (although I can say the reverse is true also). I do find it interesting though that conversatiosn like this usually go the same way:
Android Fanboy - Apple sucks
Apple Fanboy - No true, here is what is great about Apple
Android Fanboy - Apple sucks because I'm a tech geek and they aren't as techy
Apple Fanboy - Well Apple is really innovative
Android Fanboy - No they aren't, Apple just steals stuff and brainwashes people into thinking it's new
Apple Fanboy - Well here are more reasons I like Apple
Android Fanboy - you're a hippy who wants to pretend to be cool
My point is that the conversation is always about Apple. Even this thread is all about the pros and cons of Apple. Like it or not, Apple is beginning and the end right now despite Android market share.

You care so much more than anyone else in this thread about a brand name that it's ridiculous. You realize that you're giving your undying loyalty to a company that's taking your money, right?
You haven't even posted once about basketball on a basketball forum, but you're butthurt over people politely discussing your favorite brand. Sillyness.
Seriously, we all do the same things on computers and portable media. We check email, write stuff, listen to music, play games, and watch videos. At the end of the day, this guy is just going to spend 100k more in his lifetime (according to a recent stats) in order to have an apple logo on all his electronics.
Do I own Apple products? Sure. Will I research all makes and brands before buying my next electronic? No doubt. Anyone that doesn't do that (fanboy or not) is just throwing away money.

Foxconn is kinda big (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn#Major_customers), counting Acer, Amazon.com, Apple, Cisco, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Microsoft, Motorola, Nintendo, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Sony, Toshiba and Vizio as customers.
That doesn't leave us with many techno-gadget vendors!
you're no fun!

Wait...there are people out there who don't have Apple products?!?
Unfortunately, IT shops are starting to curse employees with crApple products. Mine does. I also have the disadvantage of now using AT&T as a carrier. Or not using them as a carrier because I have a signal near Boston only about 75% of the time and never at home or at work (which is nice). It's just not worth paying through the nose to Verizon to get rid of the work-paid phone.

And get 200K more use and pleasure from the Apple device, per recent stats* * Ya, that is made up, just like the 100K stat is made up, unless you are a really really frequent replacer of tech.
Seriously, it is funny how hard to use some of the Andriod devices are... maybe the new jellybean or ice cream sandwich or whatever, is better, but with a low adoption rate, who knows. Also, why is it that Apple users use many more features than Android users and dominate web traffic, etc.... because people can figure out how to use many features, etc.
When I got my 3G iphone when it first came out, I was blown away. The care that went into the user end experience blew me away. I stopped making fun of apple at that point and have come to appreciate what they deliver. Hey, I have friends who still swear by Blackberry's, which I find odd, but to each his or her own.

I think the "recent statistic" was that Apple users spend more than their non-Apple counterparts, period. Part of this probably socio-economic in nature, part of it might be brand loyalty (or blindness as some have argued). Whether that number is $100K, $200K or $200, I don't know, but the marketing/research data miners for Orbitz are already trying to capitalize on it.

Yeah I heard that on NPR the other day. It had to do with the majority of Apple users being educated, middle-upper class consumers that tend to spend quite a bit more money than non-apple users when visiting Orbitz. It's really interesting from the web-analytics side of things.

Ahh, Skatastraphy, you make me laugh. Let's review your posts and determine who is butthurt and enjoy your "polite" discussion on the matter. Here is a part of your very first post in this thread:
"Only the technologically illiterate waste money on Apple products." Very polite and obviously no butthurt going on here.
Here are some follow ups:
"This is the stupidest thing I've ever read." Again, extremely polite and level headed of you.
"Everyone in this thread has been pretty level-headed about the iOS v Android thing up until your post. You're very obviously an Apple fanboy"Apple is losing by a huge margin to Android. Not sure what planet you live on?
You are quite possibly the biggest Apple fanboy on the muscoop forums. Congratulations on your granny-smith colored glasses! Only $599 with a 2 year contract So thank you for being so level headed and polite. You are an example for us all.
By the way, I leave my posts on basketball for boards with much less crazy, irrational, drivel. Have you read how threads devolve on this board? However, this was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. In fact it was your overly polite, non butt hurt first post that truly motivated me. Now go apply some ointment to your bleeding posterior wound.

Smaller screen, lower resolution, lower quality camera, fewer apps, no 3G/4G capability,
not currently shipping. Superior.
...Not that I expect a reasonable discussion from anyone on this board—Apple or Android mouthpieces alike—but it looks like a neat little device, clearly meant to challenge the Fire, the best selling Android tablet on the market.
From my view, I want to see what they do with it. At $200, you'll have a TON of people picking one up, and that'll draw developer interest. Can they keep it updated? Only 10% of Android phones on the market run a version created in the last two years [1]. Will this little guy have the same fate?
Assuming they can tackle those two issues, I don't see why this wouldn't become a great device.

Apple products suck the hind tit for business. Their email app is frickin awful and you can't just not use it. Ditto for Safari - it sucks. But you can't use any other browser as the default and Apple mandates that any other browser is crippled compared to Safari. So I call it crabapple because I think it truly is crap - overly limiting for anyone that wants to do more than shoot pissed off animals at structures or slice various fruits. Sorry about your tiny pink phone love, bro.
Here's one last, desperate, likely to fail attempt...
Marquette updated their app yesterday. Now when you open it, the pictures cycle (actually looks pretty good) and has the options of...
- Admissions & Academics, which describes available majors, minors, programs, schools, libraries, and a section for parents
- Maps & Tour, a Google map of campus with about 50 flags of important locations that link to pictures, addresses, and phone numbers
- Contacts, which right now really only seems to have General Info, Emergency, and Undergrad Admissions
- News, Buzz, Social Media, includes News & Events, Social Media, and Web Exclusives from Marquette Magazine
- Campus Life, which has a number of areas, from athletics to on-campus cultural centers to worship activities to the Marquette email
- Alumni, includes info to connect to alumni, club info, networking, and donation info
.
For a prospective or current student, it actually looks like it has a lot of useful information. It's clearly still just out of Beta Test mode, and needs some improvements, but I like seeing Marquette continue to branch out using modern technology. Anyone else have thoughts on the App?
Does the app have a crime blotter?
Did you guys see the re-tooled google voice actions (dubbed google now) demoed the other day? Since android is the godfather of mobile voice action (sorry siri) i'm not surprised at how impressive it is.
Also, in regards to the nexus 7 and software updates this tablet is a carrier free google flagship device which should have zero issues in that regard.
