Thats fine, but if you walk around calling the sky orange as if you believe it to be a fact, expect some people to disagree.

I guess if you're oblivious to what's going on in Colorado, you would disagree.  And you would be wrong.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Alright ... let's frame this debate in exactly the way you think it should be discussed. I think most people would agree that Ultrabooks are the hot new segment, but we can look at any product line you'd like.

Maybe you could compare the latest Dell laptop with a 2880 x 1800 screen resolution to the new MacBook Pro? Is that top-of-the-line?

If that is your invitation, then why not let me build my own computer like I've been doing for 10 years.  I can build a desktop with far superior hardware than you can find by going to your local Apple store for a hell of a lot less money.

As for laptops I will be honest and say I don't know enough to frame an argument.  And since pretty much any desktop I build will have better specs than any laptop from any company.

Though I guess I have pretty much strayed from the original argument quite a bit here.

I don't hate them.  I just don't understand the love people have for them.  I don't understand how they will pay more for something that just shouldn't cost as much as it does.  Then I realize that there are plenty of suckers born every minute.

That's not exactly fair.

A mustang is faster and cheaper than a mini-van. Doesn't mean it's a better choice for my mom.

Different applications require different solutions.

Apple has great design and simple usability. The trade off is that it's not very versatile or upgradable. Well, some people don't need those features. Just like my mom doesn't need a V8.

Quote from: Guns n Ammo on June 27, 2012, 09:42:39 AMFor tech savy, high end consumers, it might not be the best product. That crowd wants something they can work with and upgrade.

I'm a web developer (sometimes) and think I fit pretty well into the "tech savvy" crowd. I stopped caring long, long ago about upgrading my graphics card. I want a machine that works and has a strong portfolio of software for my needs. I can buy a low-upgradability (see this? You have me making up words!) machine from Dell or HP or Lenovo or Apple. I'm not sure why Apple is singled out as "made for low-tech".

To continue your analogy... Why buy a BMW minivan when you can just as easily buy a Ford minivan and pay a lot less for basically the same thing?

Ah. Now it makes sense. You're singling out Apple when in reality ALL computer makers, regardless of OS affiliation, fall into your same "less functionality for more money" argument.

Do you seriously not believe in differing levels of production quality / fit and finish?

I'm not a tech freak by any means, but dollar for dollar, non-apple products seem to be a better value. I could absolutely be wrong. This is just my impression from shopping for laptops and phones the past few years.

I'm an apple fan. I like the simplicity and elegance of their solutions. But, I can recognize that Apple is the perfect solution for everybody.

If it's for my mom, I'm probably buying an apple. If it's for me, I might consider something else. If it's for an IT guru who likes to tinker, he might build it himself. I don't think one choice is a "winner", I just say different.

You're right.

But, if you can afford the BMW:
1. it's attractive
2. high quality
3. holds resale value
4. dependable
5. great customer service

If you want bang for you buck, Ford is a great option. That doesn't mean the BMW is a bad choice. Just different.

Okay, but now imagine that the BMW and the Ford are made from the same parts (like Apple and PC's generally are).  What is the point of the BMW?

Because you get the free oil changes and service with the BMW and the resale value is terrific

I would never argue Apple is the perfect solution for everyone (although I do own stock, so start buying folks!). Dollar for dollar you can almost always buy something less expensive. You can go with laminate instead of granite counter tops. They'll both do the trick, although one certainly looks nicer and is higher quality. They both have their uses ... but the idea that granite is wasted money just because you don't care to look at the added value is silly.

Well, in reality, they are made of the same parts. BMW uses the internal combustion engine, 4 tires, independent front suspension, etc. etc.

They just do it different and better than most.

Again, I'm not saying one is clearly "better". Every time I see a BMW or an Apple product, I don't think the person is a "sucker". It might fit their application very well, and that does include some status.

So much for learning what the Marquette App does. I DLed it and opened it this morning, and all it is is a picture of someone studying. Is there any point to this app?

As far as Apple v Android...about 3 years ago I bought an iPhone, had it for a week, returned it and had an Android for a week, then went back and got an iPhone. Both had pros and cons, but at least at that point, Apple was the clear leader and it wasn't remotely close. I was satisfied with my iPhone for just under 2 years and went out and bought a 4GS when it was time for a new phone without a second thought. I've been very happy with my iPhone ever since.

Maybe there are now positives to an Android, but I had numerous problems off the bat, from limited apps to worse reception and Internet accessibility to more dropped calls. And this was on an iPhone with AT&T (the only ones that had iPhone at the time). Maybe Android has caught up, but when I consider how good my iPhone has been to me, why change?

If you build your own computers, then you know there is a difference between various brands of RAM and motherboards. If company X is trying to hit a low price point and uses less-reliable components, while company Y uses top end stuff, both devices end up doing the same thing, but they are clearly not the same machine.

And I'd add that Apple does some neat things with their product development, like single block tooling to keep down on seams and body flex (I know you don't care about laptops, but that's really all I know).

You may not care about fit and finish, in which case, thank god for capitalism that there are other options, but don't knock down those of that care a bit about the craftsmanship.

I hope you enjoy driving a 1992 Ford Taurs and shopping at Aldi and Goodwill for the rest of your life.

GOO

Why buy any vehicle other than a Prius.  But I guess all other vehicles are for idiots.  No, I don't belive this...

Anyway, the market place has spoken and is speaking.  Apple is the winner, so people obviously see value in devices that they can use and figure out and that work.  If you don't understand it, calling people idiots that do, means you may want to figure out what is going on, etc.

This is long overdue for this thread

Wait...there are people out there who don't have Apple products?!?

Well, I am currently in what I like to refer to as "I-Hell".  I have an I-Pad, which was purchased for me as a Christmas gift by my employer.  (Yes, they included the value in wages, yada yada).  However, I am a PC person at heart.

When we walk past the Apple store, sometimes we just "baah" at the sheeple for the fun of it.

Apple is in first or second place with regards to most smartphones sold (depending on quarter). Apple rakes in something like 50% of smartphone profits. Users on iOS devices account for 62% of total mobile web browsing. The App Store takes in more than twice that of Google Play.

Android has more devices in the wild.

Android is winning.
