I thought the administration who is responsible for the upcoming Hiroshima wouldn't allow JuCo's? Hope McKay is ready to earn his 3.4 GPA just to stay on the team.

Nice!

So now we have one available for 2012, but are full for 2013 assuming Otule earns another year...I think.

Now we must wait for Tokoto's transfer from UNC. ;)

2013 = Milwaukee's Best. Flintstones 2.0!

6'3" PG
6'4" 2/3
6'8" PF

That's some preeeeeeetty nasty size and athleticism.  Burton started a trend in 2012.  Wilson and now McKay have followed.  Hope this opens the floodgates for Looney & Stone too.  Everything's comin' up Milhouse!

McKay on Buzz:

"He's one of the only coaches who has been able to bring in JUCO transfers and move them on to the next level. I felt very comfortable with him. He got his start in junior college basketball and that made me feel comfortable."

We officially have the JUCO market cornered.  I f*ckin' LOVE IT!  A non-top 5 program needs to be able to find valuable players from non-traditional outlets, whether that be JUCO, Europe, Canada, wherever.  I hope we land the best JUCO player (in Buzz' opinion) every single year.  Plus I'm with Buzz when he says, "I want players that have taken the road less traveled (Robert Frost)."  Just makes it a ton easier to root for stories like Jimmy B's and Crowder's than prissy Duke burger boys.

I think we'd all find it plenty easy to root for "prissy...burger boys" if we had them. I will have absolutely no problems rooting for Looney and/or Stone if they end up at Marquette.

He presumably is a non-qualifier out of high school.  He will have to earn his associates degree, and maintain a certain GPA, to be even eligible by 2013.

I don't want to be misinterpreted, I'd love them to come too.  I'd like a guy from JUCO every year to maintain that edge, the chip on the shoulder Buzz talks about, the guys that don't even register as a blip on the radar at the Dukes of the world, along with top flight high school players like Duane Wilson and Deonte Burton.  Basically 2013 is my dream class.

Granted, hometown advantage certainly helped, but it's nice to beat a school like Indiana out for a recruit. TC's had so much success of late, that's a definite win.

And I'm embracing Jamailman's Milwaukee's Best nickname. Wonder if we can get #MilwaukeesBest trending on Twitter?

Okay, (in order of committing) Deonte Burton, Duane Wilson and Jameel McKay, the three best players to come from the Milwaukee area to Division I basketball in the same year, ever?  I think so.  And to the same team, awesome!!!!

This verbal pleases me on a number of levels.   First of all, any 6'9 switchable is welcome.   Second, it means that Buzz is still permitted to bring in JUCO's, which fizzles a lot of the recent talk.   Third, we get a hungry player with something to prove, which Buzz does better with than players who come in feeling entitled.   4th, Mr. McKay talks about how Buzz is about the only coach who can get JUCO's to the league.   That isn't a bad reputation to have.   If Buzz can pick off the cream of the JUCO crop every couple of years.......great.

Guys, I'm talking Christian Laettner, Greg Paulus, JJ Redick, Josh McRoberts, Kyle Singler, Ryan Kelly here.  Obviously I'd love for MU to win titles, but if I had my druthers I'd roll with Jimmy, DJO, Crowder, & McKay any day of the week over those guys on the way to hanging that banner.

I did a bunch of hunting but couldn't see where he was projected coming out of high school.  Was he a top 100 recruit prior to the non-qualifier status?

I realize that he's a top Juco prospect now, but just am curious where he was projected prior to Indian Hills.

McKay wasn't highly ranked coming out, largely because he didn't start playing organized ball until his junior year, by which time the rankings are generally set. From what I've seen, he probably would have been top-100 had he been playing earlier, and as a JUCO equivalent is seen as a solid four-star prospect.

Jameel McKay of IHCC named to the NJCAA All-Tournament team

March 26, 2012

Indian Hills Community College freshman Jameel McKay was named to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the NJCAA Division I Basketball Championship over the weekend.

McKay had double figures in points and rebounds in every one of IHCC's four games at the national tourney, scoring a total of 61 points and grabbing 50 rebounds.

The Warriors won their final three games after losing their opening-round contest.

Their seventh-place finish marked the seventh time in nine trips to the tournament that they have finished in the top seven.

McKay, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is one of only three freshmen on the 13-player All-Tournament team.

He was the leading scorer and rebounder for Indian Hills during the Warriors' 33-4 season with averages of 14.6 points and 7.7 rebounds.

The 33 wins for Indian Hills represent the seventh time in school history the Warriors have won that many games in a season.

I doubt it. Brand was the first early entrant for K, and losing William Avery and Corey Maggette at the same time was devastating to that team. It was a different world back then. Since then, guys like Luol Deng, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer, and Kyrie Irving have made the early entrant thing as routine at Duke as it is at UNC or other schools.

Another good get by the Buzzman.  I have never seen a coach so good at not only balancing recruiting classes, but is so adept at balancing classes with upperclass experience when holes arise. Another instance of balance is if Juan redshirts, dropping him down a year.

Juan just had shoulder surgery, I've heard the rehab is usually between 6-8 months. That could have him available as soon as December, in which case he'll probably play, or could have him out until February, in which case it may not be worth burning a year to play 8-12 games like Junior did.

Indian Hills CC roster had him listed at 6'8", but the team picture shows him as the second tallest guy on the team at the same height as a guy (#50) whose listed at 6'9" and just shorter than a guy (standing next to Jameel) listed as a 6'10" center.  Jameel is number 35.

Quotejsglow, warriorchick jr. and I went Sobelman's today and saw about six members of the basketball team (including DJO) having lunch with Jameel.  At least I think it was him.  Height was right, and he had his suitcase with him as if he was on his way back out of town.

Looks like everyone was bonding quite nicely.

I posted this on the visit thread before I noticed this one.  We must have seen Jameel right after the announcement.  No wonder everyone at the table looked so happy!

All right Warriorchick, what did you do to get him to sign? Was it a big smile or just that Nashville charm? Or did your group pick his check up?

Either way, nice going!!!!!!!!!!

Well, if you are giving me credit, I will take it!

Actually, it was about 1:00, so it was after the official announcement. And I would have totally picked up the check, but you know, NCAA rules....

I did find it a little amusing to see the guys pull out seven different debit cards when the check came and make the poor Sobelman's server sort it all out.  Even Jameel had to buy his own burger...couldn't DJO have treated him?  He will have a job soon enough.

Why would Juan and/or Buzz want to do that?

Besides a lot of missed time due to his recovery this season making this a limited season for him, Juan would be a junior with eligibility (if he doesn't redshirt) with McKay and with Jwilson, Gardner, and Otule as seniors...and Steve Taylor as a sophomore two seasons from now....all getting time ahead of him on the backline most likely.  So he would basically not see much playing time until his senior year if he doesn't redshirt, wasting two years.  With a redshirt, on the other hand, Buzz gets two juniors in Taylor and Juan, and McKee as a senior on the front line.

I like milwaukees best for this group. I also don't mind a few milwaukees best as that is what I started drinking on. But, milwaukees best isn't usually synonymous with elite, top of the line, or great as I see this bunch as being. I don't want to get ahead of myself as they may never be any of those things. Although Id put my money on this class.

Trinity reminds me of the bar. And wis kids reminds me of some 12 year old kids from

Still plenty of time to think of something clever.

Thoughts? No, no, and no. Absolutely nothing that relates to any numbers. Because Milwaukee's Best should be a beginning, not the be-all, end-all. If Looney commits, he can also be considered one of Milwaukee's Best. So can Diamond Stone or Damontrae Jefferson or any other local kids. And the nickname should be at most 2 words (so it flows well, as you said). I like Brewsers, but I really think Milwaukee's Best resonates well with the city and the recruits will probably get a nice chuckle out of it because I'm sure they understand the double entendre.

Nimrod (South Dakota Coyote) didn't do much his freshman year, but he's very good.  Goggle-wearing guard that was fun to watch in AAU ball.

Article by Eric Bossi at Rivals.com

Watching and talking to Jameel McKay, it was pretty clear that Marquette was going to be the team to beat.

Friday, the Indian Hills Community College player -- who is originally from Milwaukee -- took an unofficial visit. He committed to Buzz Williams Saturday morning.

"They don't play players by position, they just play players," McKay told Rivals.com. "It doesn't matter if you are a four or a five or whatever, you just play and they put guys on the court."

The Golden Eagles' style is a natural fit for McKay. A 6-foot-8 forward with length and athleticism, he plays with relentless energy.

McKay says that Williams' experience with coaching and developing junior college players was important to him.

"That was probably one of the biggest things is his success with JUCO players," McKay said. "Knowing that he's dealt with players that have the same background as me and he was a JUCO coach, it was a big impact on me. He's proven he can develop JUCO players for the next level."

A hometown kid, the four-star McKay is excited to join a 2013 recruiting class that includes four-star high schoolers Deonte Burton and Duane Wilson

"Being able to play with Deonte Burton again, that played a big factor because we won a lot of AAU games together," McKay said. "Duane is coming, too, and it's real exciting to know that people are starting to stay in the city and want to stay here and play for Marquette."

Is Milwaukee the Cream City?  Wow, that's well, something I guess.

Milwaukee has long been known as the "Cream City," and while many people assume that the name comes from the State's long pre-eminence in the dairy industry, it is in fact derived from the cream-colored bricks from which many of the City's buildings are constructed.  Deep veins of red lacustrine clay run along the western shore of Lake Michigan, and one of the unique properties of this clay is that when formed into bricks, it turns a light golden yellow color after firing.

Milwaukee masons have used these locally fired bricks since the first brick homes were built in the area in the late 1830s. By the 1850's, word of Milwaukee's cream-colored bricks had spread throughout the Midwest, and demand increased dramatically. To supply that need, brickyards grew throughout the area...

Milwaukee's brick making boom lasted well into the 1870's. More and more of the city's buildings were constructed of the local bricks, to a point that visitors could not help but notice the overwhelming cream coloration of the city. As a result, it was during this era that the city became known as the "Cream City," and the bricks in turn became universally known as "Cream City bricks."

Laettner was a douchebag. Also one of the most accomplished college basketball players ever. I'd take his clone, or maybe a couple of them, on my team anytime. I'd take Redick and Singler, too, of course, as would any intelligent basketball fan.

Why does this always have to be an either-or for some on this board? "Tough, hardscrabble, Buzz-type JUCO" or "prissy Dookie." Ugh. We have to choose the type of great players we want, I guess.

You know, given the same choice, I'm thinking Duke fans will choose the championship players.

The thumb that Larry Williams and Pilarz are pushing on Buzz is incredible.  Not sure how he is going to get anything done.

Well, without using the sarcasm, it seems like Buzz is doing things he likes (hiring a guy he knows for big $, landing another JUCO talent).

Maybe the alleged "friction" was simply personality based, not really professionally based?

Who knows.

Anyways, the off season so far has been very good for MU. If MU can keep this roster together for the next few years, they will be very good/deep. Love it.

And maybe Buzz and LW, being adults and all, simply sat down and hashed it all out.  Time will tell.

We'll know at the BBQ.

If Buzz wipes sauce off Larry's face, it's true love.

If he doesn't, then let the speculation begin.

Fixed.  At least a decade later Pavia tried to shake Hank Raymonds hand, and Raymonds wouldn't do it, and I don't blame him.

Excellent.

While Milwaukee may be the Cream City, it rolls off the tongue like a broken down car with triangular wheels.

Okay, then with a historical/linguistic nod to Pere Marquette, how about "Creme de la Cremeville?"

I hope that over time Buzz develops the same type of close relationship with Fr Pilarz and Larry Williams that he had with Fr Wild and Steve Cottingham.

Regardless, the basketball news recently (Du Wilson, Chew, McKay) is all good. Marquette fans should be excited.

Agree. I'm just poking fun at our reactions to things we say/hear. We don't really know 99% of the story, but that doesn't stop us from speculating using the 1% we do know.

Murs, you're wonderful man, but you have to understand something. We did ourselves in that day. The ref was bad, but there was no excuse for Marquette being anywhere close in the score to Miami of Ohio. Hank knew it too and it's a heck of a lot easier to blame a ref than it is to acknowledge you lost control of your team.

That game should have been a blow-out by halftime and we should have been playing walk-ons beginning in the last 10 minutes of the second half.

Miami of Ohio did us in that day -- because we let them! So please don't blame the ref. All he added was contributory negligence.

That game embitters me because it started the downslide. Everything that went wrong with Marquette basketball in the 1980s began in March 1978

I have trouble believing that Murs.  See this link to an old JS article one week after the MU-MU game.

I think the point is the game should never have been close enough to have those calls effect the outcome. Perhaps the team was looking forward to the second round matchup and was looking past Ohio.

I do agree that game began the long and painful slide for the program.

Wow, hard  impossible to argue with that.  I always thought of the Hank refusing to shake Pavia's hand story as the exception that proved the rule regarding what a gentleman Raymonds was.
