McKay on Buzz:

"He's one of the only coaches who has been able to bring in JUCO transfers and move them on to the next level. I felt very comfortable with him. He got his start in junior college basketball and that made me feel comfortable."

We officially have the JUCO market cornered.  I f*ckin' LOVE IT!  A non-top 5 program needs to be able to find valuable players from non-traditional outlets, whether that be JUCO, Europe, Canada, wherever.  I hope we land the best JUCO player (in Buzz' opinion) every single year.  Plus I'm with Buzz when he says, "I want players that have taken the road less traveled (Robert Frost)."  Just makes it a ton easier to root for stories like Jimmy B's and Crowder's than prissy Duke burger boys.

Hopefully, you'll be able to handle rooting for burger boys by the time Looney and Stone commit.  Wadesworld was there first.

So, you're calling a BOT member's kid "prissy".  I hope you don't run into Doc at a game!

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

He presumably is a non-qualifier out of high school.  He will have to earn his associates degree, and maintain a certain GPA, to be even eligible by 2013.

He was.  I checked.

Okay, (in order of committing) Deonte Burton, Duane Wilson and Jameel McKay, the three best players to come from the Milwaukee area to Division I basketball in the same year, ever?  I think so.  And to the same team, awesome!!!!

This verbal pleases me on a number of levels.   First of all, any 6'9 switchable is welcome.   Second, it means that Buzz is still permitted to bring in JUCO's, which fizzles a lot of the recent talk.   Third, we get a hungry player with something to prove, which Buzz does better with than players who come in feeling entitled.   4th, Mr. McKay talks about how Buzz is about the only coach who can get JUCO's to the league.   That isn't a bad reputation to have.   If Buzz can pick off the cream of the JUCO crop every couple of years.......great.

Enroute to the Perfect Storm:

2013: McKay  (done)
2014: Looney
2015: Stone

With Burton and Wilson, Wow......

Guys, I'm talking Christian Laettner, Greg Paulus, JJ Redick, Josh McRoberts, Kyle Singler, Ryan Kelly here.  Obviously I'd love for MU to win titles, but if I had my druthers I'd roll with Jimmy, DJO, Crowder, & McKay any day of the week over those guys on the way to hanging that banner.

The white guys?

Seriously, Laettner is one of the great college basketball players of all time.  I'd take him in an instant.  Though not at that level, Reddick and Singler can play for MU anytime they want.

Can someone scrutinize McKay's past for any signs of thuggery or criminal activity?  Jeff Potrykus and the Badger board anxiously await your conclusions!

I did a bunch of hunting but couldn't see where he was projected coming out of high school.  Was he a top 100 recruit prior to the non-qualifier status?

I realize that he's a top Juco prospect now, but just am curious where he was projected prior to Indian Hills.

Great news!

Also pumped to add another J to the list. May have to change my screen name to JamilJaeJameelJamalJrJuan.

Great get, Buzz. Were going to be very, very, very, very, very good in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015.

McKay wasn't highly ranked coming out, largely because he didn't start playing organized ball until his junior year, by which time the rankings are generally set. From what I've seen, he probably would have been top-100 had he been playing earlier, and as a JUCO equivalent is seen as a solid four-star prospect.

Now this is how you do revisionist history!

From Inside the Hall;

April 20, 2012     Hoosiers making a strong push for Jameel McKay

June 2, 2012      "it's unclear how hard the Hoosiers had been recruiting McKay in recent weeks."

Jameel McKay of IHCC named to the NJCAA All-Tournament team

March 26, 2012

Indian Hills Community College freshman Jameel McKay was named to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the NJCAA Division I Basketball Championship over the weekend.

McKay had double figures in points and rebounds in every one of IHCC's four games at the national tourney, scoring a total of 61 points and grabbing 50 rebounds.

The Warriors won their final three games after losing their opening-round contest.

Their seventh-place finish marked the seventh time in nine trips to the tournament that they have finished in the top seven.

McKay, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is one of only three freshmen on the 13-player All-Tournament team.

He was the leading scorer and rebounder for Indian Hills during the Warriors' 33-4 season with averages of 14.6 points and 7.7 rebounds.

The 33 wins for Indian Hills represent the seventh time in school history the Warriors have won that many games in a season.

Thanks.  Obviously his recent JUCO performance makes me hopeful that he can contribute on the Butler / Crowder / DJO level, I was just surprised that there was little / no press on his high school career.

Next year a senior at Washington High School in Milwaukee will be a 6'2" guard named Jamaar McKay.

Anybody know if he and Jameel are related?

I doubt it. Brand was the first early entrant for K, and losing William Avery and Corey Maggette at the same time was devastating to that team. It was a different world back then. Since then, guys like Luol Deng, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer, and Kyrie Irving have made the early entrant thing as routine at Duke as it is at UNC or other schools.

Sweet!  If you look at actual news, this is one of the best offseasons I can remember.  Great signings, a great hire, great scheduling.  Very exciting stuff happening.
