I know 75% of you will probably complain and refuse...... but the other board is trying to put a gold out together for the Madison game.

Of course, I'll wear gold as it is one of our colors. I/We may have objected to being called Gold, but I have no objection to proudly wearing school colors, INCLUDING gold. Also, gold will help blunt any ugly red in the stands... ;)
I'll be wearing gold, but sadly I won't be at the game. Don't most here (except for PRN) wear gold to every game anyway???
Agree, many will complain, but I challenge all to wear your gold in honor of Hank. If that does not motivate you, and how can it not?, what about in support of Joe Fulce?
I will don my gold and get the red out!
I'll have a gold Warriors shirt on
I am impressed! I thought this would have been shot down by most scoopers. My apologies!
I will wear gold. Always do. Too many stick in the mud adults and alums who are too stodgy to buy or wear something gold. I'd love to see a gold out. My guess is it will be about 60% just like the last time we tried to have it done. I hope I'm wrong but even a bunch of guys who sit near my season tickets who I know are huge MU fans........NEVER wear gold. Or team colors. Come on.
I will have gold on.
Always have gold on. Keep those commy reds out
My torso will be covered in gold, but of course my sleeves and neck will be covered by my white turtleneck.
I'd rather be dead than red!

Can somebody explain to me the reason some people don't want to wear gold? Has it not always been a Marquette color, whether Warriors or Golden Eagles, or heck, Golden Avalanche and Hilltoppers?
I'm happy to wear gold...every game it's either blue or gold. If people want a gold-out, then gold it is :D

Some people believe (or, maybe even know) that Crean was behind the change of the name to Gold, calling the student section the "Gold Rush" (or whatever it was) and pushing for people to wear gold to games. Thus, no matter how much sense it makes to wear gold to games (it looks GREAT on tv), some people are violently opposed because that's what Crean wanted.

there are a variety of reasons, but i always just got the impression some ppl (older crowd primarily) is too stubborn 'just cause'. your reasons make sense though
I think its especially important for this game, where there will be a significant number of away fans in attendance. Wearing a neutral color like grey or white...or even navy blue...even if it is a Marquette color will not negate the fans wearing red. If we really want to make the BC look like our house we need to wear gold. It is the most distinctive Marquette color
Gold sweatshirt was the first article of MU gear I ever purchased at the Spirit Shop (it was on sale, of course)...I'll be wearing it.
The sweater vest is ready for its 1st game this year

I think you're both right on, just for different groups of people. When I was at MU in the late 70's, blue was definitely the color. The way I remember it, Crean was behind pushing the gold color. If that's why some people don't like it, I think they should get over it, Crean was right on this one, it
does look better on TV. If someone wants to continue with the cherished rag they wore all though the '76-'77 season, I can understand that though. Maybe they could wear it under an oversized yellow sweatshirt like Michael Jordan did when he wore his North Carolina shorts under his Bull's uniform.

What bothers me is that, as much as I love MU (and wear gold to every game), if Badger Nation were to put out the word that for one of their huge games they wanted everyone coming to the game to wear a red shirt (or white), you all know that 95%+ of the stadium will be solid one color and it looks very cool.
Meanwhile at MU, trying to get the stadium to 'gold out' ends up about 60% to 70% and it just looks kinda lazy and half-a$$ed. I'd love to see it but I'm assuming I'll be disappointed Saturday.
1. Color-outs at sporting events are so played out it's ridiculous.
2. Dressing the same as others, in any context (jeans day, Hawaiian shirt day, hat day) is completely pathetic.
3. Wearing gold, to me, is an inherent endorsement of our nickname and I will never do it.
4. Although a Saturday game is a different story, asking people to wear gold...an awful color on pretty much everybody in the world...all day is a tall order. If you have to do something this lame, why not have a navy blue out?
Will I wear gold? No, but my blue sweatshirt will have gold lettering, if that helps.
I agree people have their various reasons for not wearing gold. From a visual standpoint, it does look better on TV.
Not sure why MU BB cannot tweet this to everyone or do one of their email blasts? Or perhaps those of us "older" alums who do not tweet would respond to the robo-dialer with a message from Buzz or one of the team to wear gold.
If you know of any STH or alums who will be at this game and do not visit the message boards, call them and tell them to wear gold.

1. I don't see how wearing a color that has always been a Marquette color is endorsing the new nickname that you dislike so much. Marquette's shorts were gold (although a different shade) when we won the nat'l championship.
2. Nobody is asking you to wear gold all day. How difficult is it to wear a gold sweatshirt for 2 hours on a Saturday. Although I'm sure your sweatshirt looks like a tailored suit on you, maybe you could buy into the program and show your support for your school. You may call it cheesy and played out, but when the players look up into the stands and see all gold I imagine it will make them feel really special. Or you can just be stubborn, which I'm sure is what you will do regardless of what I say.
I will gladly wear my gold. I will wear two gold t-shirts and if I see PuertoRican I will give him one. No idea who he is though...

1) But they look good, and especially in this day and age, image matters. This is the kind of game that future recruits will be watching and possibly attending. Creating an atmosphere comes not just from the noise of the stadium, but the coordination of the student section and the colors in the stands. You may not like the color, but it does create a distinctive image, one that recruits would hopefully want to be part of.
2) Comparing Hawaiian shirt day at work to attending a sporting event is silly.
3) Really? So if Marquette went back to Warriors, would you protest if they still had gold jerseys? We were gold before Golden Eagles, before Gold, and if there's another change, we'll still be gold. That's a rather absurd high horse to perch on.
4) As mentioned, you don't have to wear it all day. Wear it to the game, that's it. Help Marquette create an atmosphere that is seen both by the opponent and prospective recruits. Hell, by our own team. And a navy-blue out...it just doesn't look as good. I like our navy blue color as well, but it's far less distinctive.
PRN is the cranky old man here. Gimme a break, who exactly is it that you need to impress that you can't wear a gold shirt? And wearing a gold shirt endorses the nickname "Gold?" That's the silliest thing I've ever heard.
And just because you're wearing it to the game doesn't mean you have to wear it the whole day, either. Wear a gold long sleeve tee and throw a nice metrosexual sweater over it once you leave the game to go sip your martinis at Victor's.

Lame.
And by the way, our color isnt gold...its Yellow.
PRN: You could always wear a gold shirt underneath during the game and then wear your blue sweatshirt over that before/after the game. I understand that you have your reasons for not supporting the whole gold color so instead you could wear a yellow shirt during the game and then that way you will still blend in with the crowd and not look like the guy who's too cool to follow the crowd for a color-out. I mean really, you honestly can't support the team by wearing gold (or yellow) like the rest of the crowd for 2.5 hours?
Guys, don't even try. PRN would rather wear red at the game, than gold.

I posted this is February, '09. I don't dislike you guys and I'm sorry I won't participate in your color party; we may just have to agree to disagree:
While I'm not 40 (yet) I'll attempt to give my answer to this question. This is going to offend a lot of you, but please keep in mind I mean no disrespect.
One aspect of attending Marquette which I, (and a lot of other students), took pride in is that we were the anti-ND, anti-UW-Madison, anti-UI-Champaign, etc. Those schools were in beautiful locales in the middle of nowhere; we all went to school in the ghetto. Those schools had a golden dome or fancy building; our campus was a trash-filled alley. I love MU and this is by no means an insult. Quite contrary, we took pride being from the 'wrong side of the tracks' if you will.
While we have school spirit, wearing the exact same thing as everyone else goes against how a lot of us feel. ND, Duke and other schools love to do this, with everyone wearing the same shirt and all the fans doing their pansy fist-pump cheers at the exact same time. We'd rather cheer loudly when we feel like it, on our own terms. And we want to wear whatever we feel like.
I know it's very difficult to explain, but until the alumni who attend MU games are comprised solely of graudates from the late 90's on, I don't think this "Gold-out" thing is going to catch on. At least not fully.
In theory, it's stupid to even root for Marquette basketball. Or any sports team, for that matter. Why should any individual care whether or not a team is good or bad or mediocre at playing a game? Why spend (in some cases tremendous amounts of) time and money to watch a game?
In fact, it is a sign of weakness that any of us are remotely invested in the performance of the team. Our self-esteem should be strong enough not to be affected by a game that involves putting a rubber ball into a metal hoop. Not to mention that the majority of players in the game are not exactly representative of the broader student body.
However, for better or worse, part of my ego is attached to the perceived value of Marquette and its most visible representation of a basketball team. I like rooting for Marquette basketball and participating in this forum because it helps me feel a part of something larger than myself. At least that's my rationalization. That broader connection helps bring some order and purpose to my place in the world.
On my couch on Saturday, I'll wear gold to enhance that sense of connection. I know friends, acquaintances, and other random strangers will be wearing gold and watching at the same time. If people choose to not wear gold, well, that's their choice. But then the communists win. After all...
We Are Marquette

I will be doing the PA for a D3 doubleheader Saturday, but proudly wearing a Gold polo shirt at the press table.
Years ago, the main color people wore was dark blue, a color I wish they would go back to. Some people, like me, just don't look good in yellow.
I know several years ago, at Tennessee, they wanted to do their orange and white checkerboard pattern (that is on their football field) for a nationally televised bb game - so they somehow planned it out and had a tshirt on every seat so when people sat down they were to put them on. It looked really cool on tv - now if only Marquette could find a generous donor to provide us with shirts..........
Also, off subject....sort of.... I wish the book store would come up with new apparel, especially for women. The stuff they have is pretty ugly - it seems like all they carry are sweatshirts......there is so much more out there....
Well said Henry. And Pepperoni, I can follow your train of thought and agree with much of it, though at some point in time you have to latch onto something that unites you with your fellow alumni of all generations as well as the current student body.
I'm a stubborn old fart alumni (1980) who will never understand why we're still not Warriors, but I'll be wearing my gold t-shirt, though at my daughter's BB game. If any of you can't stomach gold, wear something yellow. Whatever you do, STAY AWAY FROM RED!! ;D
On another note, those sweater vests definitely send a fashion message and it's not a good one.
Go Marquette.
For big games, I think it looks great. Energizes the crowd as well. Looked awesome at a few of the Stanley Cup finals games I went to...the opposing fans stuck out like turds in a fishbowl.

Just curious Chicos, but I'm guessing those color-outs included a free t-shirt giveaway. I feel that's the only way that you can have a successful color-out. There simply aren't enough fans that read these boards to do it right. Also, on top of that even if they read the board, there will be some that still don't do it or may not even own the right color shirt.
Amen, sista! It's not easy looking foxy in the BC in our dandelion yellows.... :/ try doing it in a rugby (thankfully i am retired, lol) seriously, could they conceive to make more girl-cut jerseys/shorts, etc.? the boxy look is so 90s... or something. If they can make girl-cut scrubs, they can make girl-cut bball duds!! (source: medelita.com)

Marquette has tried that too the baby-blue out (free shirts places at every seat). It failed as well with only about ~70% of the fans actually putting on their new shirts. I don't know why Marquette fans can't get this right, but it's clear to me that it's not going to happen on Saturday - at least not to the extent that many would like to see it happen.
Really? You older gents don't look good in gold? But I'm sure you look like a million bucks in navy blue. Who are you trying to impress? Some hot young college girls....... who are wearing GOLD?!?!?
On the plus side it seems like everyone who refuses to wear gold is older. Give it 25 or 30 years when they are gone and we can finally have our gold out.
Why are we trying for a "Gold Out" when we know that at least 20-30% of the people there will be UW fans.
I love the old guys that won't wear gold because it doesn't look good on them.
Hilarious.
Also, purchasing season tickets, but refusing to wear a gold t-shirt as some sort of small protest against the nickname has to be the most misguided/ironic idea I've heard in a while:
Dear MU,
Here is my large check and donation for season tickets, but just so you know, I won't wear gold. I hope you realize the mistake you made by changing the mascot every time you see me purchase another navy shirt from the gift shop. Eventually, maybe you will "get it".
Thanks again.
I'm sure MU is shaking in their boots with fear (as they cash your check... again and again).
If Mr. Rogers, class of 2001 grad speaker can rock the gold, I think some of you fuddy duddys can.

First of all, I have no probem wearing gold - nothing looks particularly good on me anyway. Also, my problem was never with a color or a mascot - for me it's all about the Warrior nickname.
But I don't get why you find small symbolic protests so laughable. Marquette made what I consider to be a stupid and cowardly decision. That doesn't mean I don't still love the university and the team. And I'll continue to support them even as I continue to remind the powers that be how I feel about the issue. And if they continue to laugh all the way to the bank while ignoring me, I'll live with it.
Eloquent, man, profound.

I understand what you are saying, I mean, if you never buy a shirt with the GE on it, hey, that's your choice, and I get that. I'm not a big fan of the GE either. Totally cool if Warrior alumni don't buy GE stuff. I get it. But that's really preference, not protest.
I laugh at the idea that refusing to wear gold is somehow a righteous protest against the terrible act of changing the nickname.
"I'll continue to buy tickets, donate to the school, go to games, but I'll never be caught wearing gold!" (shakes fist in the air) The school colors are not new. That's not really proving a thing... to anybody.
If you are really that pissed about the nickname, quit buying tickets, and send MU a letter every year with a voided check for the amount you would have spent on tickets. Now
that is a protest.
In my humble opinion, wearing blue is doesn't really prove a thing.
Considering I've seen this thread play out a bunch of times with the same arguments from the same parties I have no idea why I'm even going to try. The logic some of you follow, and I do not mean to offend you, for not wearing gold is beyond my comprehension sometimes.
" ... wearing the exact same thing as everyone else goes against how a lot of us feel." ~Pepperoni_Cannoli
Really? Basketball is a team sport. Have we forgotten that? MU has two colors: Blue and Gold. If you're not wearing one of those two colors at the BC then you have to right to be there and call yourself an MU fan. There's plenty of decent gold and/or blue apparel you can purchase to still let you express your individuality. Be part of the team.
"Wearing gold, to me, is an inherent endorsement of our nickname and I will never do it." ~PRN
Right. *sigh* You know that Gold (and Blue) were the colors back in the stone ages when you were a student? You realize that the selection of 'Golden Eagles' over the even move generic 'Eagles' was to simply play off the school colors, right? When you don't wear gold to stand up against the perceived injustice done to you, you are also standing up against the Warriors era, Hilltoppers era, and the Blue and Gold era ... all of which used the color gold (and blue) as the school colors. Its not an endorsement of the nickname ... its an endorsement, first and foremost, of the school. Have you no pride in your school anymore? WOW!
As much as I would love a Gold-out, or any color-out (except white), the reality is that its never going to happen. The baby-blue-out from a couple years ago was the only time it would've happened, but people got to their seats and were like: "Oh, look at this t-shirt they gave me. I think I'll wear it tomorrow. I can't cover up my gold sweater-vest at an MU game!"
*facepalm*
Keith
The poblem w the blue out was that they didn't put the shirts on the seats. They were giving them out by the entrances. When I got there, all they had left was mediums, which doesn't really work for this fatfuck. Get all XLs, and have them in the seats and it might work.
For those not wearing gold just remember that it will be easy to spot the badger fans. They always wear red and don't whine about it. I have a new gold shirt just for the occasion. Yes mrs. Sultan and I have returned to the MKE for this occasion.
the Mrs. & I will be in gold
I just want to input how putting a shirt on every seat doesn't work to well, games we've been to in the past that did this ended up with all of the shirts being stolen out of sections before we got to the BC and we were there 20 minutes before tip-off - this happened in the upper deck, YMMV in the season ticket holder regions
