But that block by Elliot after missing his two free throws was HUGE.

Well for almost the entire game our offense was Sam. We were lucky to win with only one of five cylinders firing. One of the most painful games to watch in the past decade. Sam is the only one who deserves it.

Ugly game, we played poorly.  Sam, however, did not.  He played great.  He is a deserving stud of the game.

Yes, agreed.  Sam was studly.  My mental state is more a result of the quality of play by the rest of the team.  Just barely beating, at home, EIU.  Ughhh.  In more complete fairness however, we did expect there would be losses to teams we should beat.  This was almost one of those, and we did pull it out in the end.

So yes, Sam.  Deservedly Sam.

It's Sam, too much offense not to give him the nod....but....his defense was attrocious tonight. Worst I've ever seen him play on that side of the floor. He was usually on Starks and that man took him to school all night.

Sam was "out athleted" by Starks, as was everyone in our starting line up except Sacar. Even their 5'2" 105 lb pg won the athletic battle at his position.

On an abomination like tonight's game, giving a stud award is an embarrassment to those who earned it.

No stud for barely beating an Illinois Directional. They should all be sent to the corner to think about what they did!

Definitely Sam, but also just getting a bit more excited each time I see Elliott & Cain play.  Still a ways to go but you can see the confidence unfolding more each game, and the athleticism is coming alive.  Elliott had two really nice buckets inside, and they both were “this close” to having Sportscenter-worthy dunks this season.  They are getting there.  When was the last time we had a player with 4 blocks and 4 steals in a game??  On the other hand, I haven’t been as impressed with Theo the last few games.  Hope he gets back on track.

I thought it was a great game.  Eastern Illinois had some extremely good players.  They challenged us the entire game and we didn't crack.  While we all wish we were a Blue Blood that crushes everyone, that is just not the case.  Take the W and get the new players up to speed as number one priority.  More minutes for the new guys whose ceilings we don't know yet.

Hauser did all the heavy lifting,it seemed he was waiting for someone, anyone to spark some offense and when no one did, he just took over. Our younger guys should watch closely how he plays the game.

In Dec 2012, we lost to Green Bay. Four months later, Green Bay capped its 18-16 with a first-round CIT loss to Bradley ... and we reached the Elite Eight.

I'm not saying we are an Elite Eight team. That would be silly. I'm not even sure we're a bubble team. But college basketball history is filled with just the kind of results that happened last night ... except the major-college team that performs horribly actually lost.

I was happy to nominate Sam for SOTG, and I'm glad to see his photo on this page again.

People seem to forget that even the best seasons have disheartening losses and near-miss wins.  Long-term, we avoided a costly loss after a surprising departure, got valuable playing time for our frosh guards, and still took home a W.

That's funny, Goose, because I did get a little pissed off for a few seconds last night. And then I turned to Mrs. 82 and said, "I'm being ridiculous. It's a basketball game." And I was able to relax and enjoy the game a lot more. Although "enjoy" might not be the right word. More like you, I was mostly bemused! I don't believe that means either of us is any less a "fan" just because we aren't throwing stuff against a wall or screaming at the TV.

If anything, I was much more frustrated listening to Dickey than watching the Warriors.

Bottom line, I'm glad we won. For a team with tourney aspirations - and I do believe we still have them - winning while playing like crap is 1,000 times better than losing while playing reasonably well. Even very good teams suffer these kinds of performances quite often - and unlike us, they actually lose the games. It sometimes even happens to Elite Eight teams!

08-09: Dayton and South Florida

09-10: NCstate and Depaul

10-11: Seton Hall

11-12: LSU

12-13: UWGB

The perfect season doesn’t exist and never did, keep in mind these are just losses there’s loads of close calls in that group against the likes of UWM, Rutgers, South Florida and more. I’m not saying don’t be alarmed but maybe apathy isn’t warranted when this has happened every season for years.

Just because the team as whole played poorly last night doesn't take away from Sam's performance. He's definitely the reason we won, plus adding in 8 or 9 boards along with the 30 points shows that he's getting tougher and getting more comfortable inside the 3 point line. I like the way he's been playing lately, and with HC gone, we're going to need to rely on Sam even more, so let's hope he can keep this up.

I remember being at that GB and nearly pulling out my hair as Buzz set a play for an inconsistent Jake Thomas to take the potential game winner from the corner and brick the shot. Worst game I've been to.

But also, this game could have been much worse. An ugly win still beats a loss. I'm happy for Sam but I think he still needs to be more assertive in this offense.

Sam committed 3 VERY sloppy turnovers, the kind he rarely does. As previously noted, he didn't have his usual solid defensive game, either. Those are my only gripes and do not otherwise detract from his performance. If he had been the one who left the program instead of Haani, we probably would have lost this game by 15+ points. This was the easiest SOTG of the season so far.

Oh, one other point: Sam is actually a darn good post-up player, especially the few times he has a high advantage. He had a couple of very nice post possessions yesterday and I was wishing he tried a few more - but when you're as hot as he was from 3, I can understand wanting to shoot more of those.

There is very little that Sam doesn't do fundamentally well on a basketball court.

This.  Glow was trying to claim that we have not lost a buy game in recent memory.  It took me a second to remember the exact team, but I reminded him about Omaha.

Does Belmont count? Then there was the iupui game that went to ot and we barely won.

What's with the nobody jokes? Sam goes for 10 over his career high in a wonderful performance. Got over this road bump. He was clutch.

I believe that Belmont was technically the first round of a tournament, not a buy game.
Have some patience, FFS.

We lost to North Dakota one year with James, McNeal, and Matthews.  Barely beat Idaho St in OT another year.  These clunkers happen.

Yep. Anyone trying to promote last night as a good thing is pumping sunshine up your butt. But anyone trying to use this as definitive proof that the team is garbage and the season is doomed is just guessing. Good teams play poorly some nights. Hopefully, the coaches use it and the team learns from it.

The people who are complaining seem to be the Al era people who would’ve been complaining even during the 05-13 years saying Al never had near losses like this
