How DJ got hurt
« on: January 10, 2008, 05:27:45 PM »
The video of the intentional foul which Tall Titan references in a prior thread causes me to reconsider how DJ really got hurt on that play.  The undercut by Nutter Butter spins DJ causing him to land on his left wrist.  However it is his right wrist that was hurt.  The right wrist lands on DJ who lands on Nutter actually breaking his fall.  It seems more likely that DJ hit his right wrist on the backboard, something he might have done considering the speed he was running even if Nutter hadn't undercut him.  You can see this on the video as well.  Not that it really matters how he got hurt but I think we all assumed it was from the fall.

Here I slowed the video down.  Disreguard the awful awful sound!

Wow - good call.  He did get from from the foul...but not from the fall.

Amazing what we can do with technology these days -eh? :) (thanks tt)

defiantly whacked his wrist on the backboard.

He may butt heads with Crean sometimes, but I doubt he whacked his wrist to be defiant  :P

Good call NotAnAlum!  Plus great work with the video Tall Titan.  You sold me.  Somebody get these guys a copy of the Zapruder film, and we'll see what they can make of it.

Guys .. I saw two other angles of that play on the TC show tonight .. from those angles, I don't believe he hurt his wrist on the backboard.

Two reasons .. from the camera under the basket, it appears that the backboard didn't so much hit his wrist as it did about 6 inches from his wrist, closer to the elbow.  But another angle shows shows the backboard hitting his arm but more of a glancing blow .. probably not hard enough nor at an odd angle to cause a sprain.

I think it was the collision and fall and brace of the fall that got his wrist .. no angle showed the heap of bodies and wrist well enough, but the two showing the backboard and arm pretty definitively showed that wasn't where the injury occurred.

Yeah in the video above Higgins is in the way.  Go figure he'd be in the right position to make a call.

the edges of the backboard are padded guys.  while he may have made contact with it, that's not what caused the injury...

Goal posts are padded and you can still hurt yourself if you run into one at full speed.

Yep, every time I hit my forearm on the back board, I never sprained my wrist.  ;D
