Is anyone in a 17 year Cicada state and have they emerged yet? Maybe it's me but I think they're extremely cool. Their cycles are a defense mechanism. They're totally harmless....apparently dogs, squirrels, and birds are chomping on them in some areas. If you have a dog in a cicada area I would monitor their gorging.
Cilly me, heer I taught Shaka recruited too brothas, hey?
If I recall, these little fellows bury themselves underground for 17 years, then emerge desperately seeking a partner to have sex with; have sex one time only; and then die.Sounds eerily similar to my high school, college and post-college years.
LOL. They've been around 50-200 million years. Clearly their strategy seems to be working.
Fascinating evolutionary biology
It's supposedly the males that whine constantly.
How does this differ from males who want to mate in any other species?
