He volunteered for the U.S. Navy and played on their base football teams: North Carolina Pre-Flight School (one of his coaches was Bear Bryant) and Great Lakes (Paul Brown was his coach). After leaving the military, he enrolled at Northwestern. He would be named the 1949 Rose Bowl MVP as the Northwestern Wildcats would defeat the University of California Golden Bears, 20-14.
