They are trying to close Hegarty's now!

"Marquette wanted to buy the building at 1120 W. Wells St., but those negotiations were suspended because St. James was unable to evict Hegarty's Pub, the suit said."

Hah.

Something like .. total up all the beer money we spent in Hegs in our lifetime, then donate that figure?

Well, that is a swell idea and all, but I can only afford to spend one fortune in my lifetime.

I thought they got rid of that awhile ago.  They definitely changed it, and then stopped it when I was at MU.  First it was $1 for any type of bottle, but they kept limiting what you could get so that eventually it was $1 for Coors products only.  Then they did away with it completely some time in 2002.

After that, most upperclassmen stopped going there and it became the place for freshman and sophomores, since they were less strict with the carding.

I fear that amount would look like the bailout bill.

Heg's is staying for now. Their lease is up in three years, and then the bar will be gone.

How long before Marquette's entire campus area goes dry?

what is even left?

Murphy's
Cafferey's
Angelo's (snicker)

and to a lesser extent... not really on campus...
The Harp
The Glock (is it even there?)
and the place across the street from The Harp

I'm glad I left when I could... soon only Dany's and OP will even sell booze.

The Harp and Conway's were rocking last Friday. Heg's and Murphy's were both dead. Caffrey's had a good amount of people, nothing stellar.

The Gloc closed a few years ago.  MU bought the land and demolished the building.  MU Facilities Services now uses the land for parking and storage.

Since I graduated in 2007, there has been a visible decline in campus bar attendance. the classes of 2008 and 2009 are not coming into campus bars (in hoardes) until midnight or later. In 2007, Murphys and Caff's would both be packed by 11 at latest.

I dont know what they are doing, but these kids are not drinking in campus bars. I guess we have laxxer bars on Water St to thank for that. Also, because of the laxer bars, I guess we have to thank them for MPD practically bringing out the riot gear everyweekend on Water. Its ridiculous.

In the early 2000's Murph's and Caff's were the big spots.  We left Water Street to the 40 year olds who wish they were in their 20's.

Is the Annex still around?  It was the cheapest place to drink on campus.

That's how it often was a few years ago.  Not that people went to Water(though some did), but most people didn't head to the bar until midnight or a bit later.  It seemed like everyone knew at least two or three people throwing a party every weekend, so you didn't go to the bars until you'd made the rounds at the parties.  Usual pattern was to drink for free at a party until midnight or so when you would kick the freshman out and head to the bars.  You'd stay til close and then go back for after bars.  It was much cheaper, and allowed you to make more money because you could charge the same freshman for the original party and the after bar.

Not to turn this into a drinking age debate, but the issue is that these kids are drinking somewhere.  Often in places where they pay for a cup and not have to worry about paying per drink.  This is where binge drinking becomes a real problem.  I'd rather have my heading-off-to-college-next-year kid in a more regulated place like a bar, than in a private party.

I'll have to agree. I frequented all above said bars from my Freshman year(04) until graduation(08). People are going elsewhere, and I do not know where that is.

hate to burst your bubble but Dany's is no more. MU bought the building and is turning it into a dorm. Sweeney's has moved to the Chinese restaurant site by Subway and Dany is now helping his cousin run Kampus Foods.

When MarpPTM speaks on Heg's, listen.

I never realized that Dany was the cousin of the Campus Foods owner.

Murphs usually has a lot more people than Caff's so I prefer Caff's.

I don't like my bar packed.  That's actually why I like Heg's.  Beer, TV, and a dart board.  That's all I need.

Also Heg's has some of the best food on campus.  Get the Brooklyn Bomber if you don't believe me.

muwarrior87

agreed on Heg's food. it is quite good.

I remember a great reuben at Hegs.

Rip Dany's! It was a hidden jewel in the 80's. Marquette liquors was overrated.

well you did turn it into one...

Look, if you educated your child well enough, you probably have nothing to worry about.  Plus, I'm not sure what bars you have been to lately, but I have never seen anyone cut off at any of the campus bars even if they were falling down drunk.  At that point, it was more likely that their friends would cut them off.

IMO I binge drank far more at the bars... anyone remember the towers of beer at Murphs? not sure they have anymore, but my friends and I used to race anyone who would dare to accept a challenge... which meant that we were basically drinking straight out of the tap person after person until the thing was gone... and it was something like 5 pitchers for the 4 of us.  since most of the parties I went to were absolutely packed and getting through the line to get to the Keg took enough time that I couldn't really binge drink... as much.
