Let's see if this institution that falls all over it's self telling everyone about it's uncompromising dignity and unparalleled integrity has any now that it's PG guard of their best hoops team in 5 years just got nailed by the man!!

I'm not trying to downplay it, but if it's only grass and if it was only for personal use I don't think it's earth-shattering. These are college kids.

BuzzSucksSucks

I agree with Harrison.  My guess is that he'll be out for the rest of the (calendar) year.

Wow, what a shocker, a college kid with weed. If anything I would be mad at the kid for getting caught, than having weed. Enter the kid into "counseling", one game suspension, and then he plays.

I don't know how it works for athletic scholarships, but for student loans a student can get totally f'ed in the A* by the government if they are convicted of drug possesion.  It is possible to lose your student loan in such cases.

I testified in court several years ago as an expert witness to the identification of plant material containing marijuana.  Why did this simple case go to court?  Because the defendent did not want to lose his student loan.  Typically MJ possesion is like a traffic citation, you pay a small fine and go home.  But there may be other consequences.  We'll have to see what ND's policy are drug charges are stated to be.

whoa, check out the dome... it's soooo colorful.
awesome.

one game suspension?  Really, Zach McCall was suspended for an entire season for MU.  Again, the clock is ticking for ND to put it's money where it's mouth is on the integrity front.

Didn't ND suspend a football player for the remainder of the season for a DUI?

... any other fine Midwestern university with a French name.

I assume no one here believes that the University of Notre Dame is different from any other large university across America. Some college students in South Bend, IN., including an athlete or two, get drunk or high now and again.

I hope no one thinks this drug arrest is especially noteworthy because a point guard who plays for Notre Dame is the one being charged.

Harrison, who began this discussion, writes, "Let's see if this institution that falls all over it's self (SIC) telling everyone about it's (SIC) uncompromising dignity and unparalleled integrity has any now that it's (SIC) PG guard of their (SIC) best hoops team in 5 years just got nailed by the man!!" (HEY, HARRISON: LOOK UP "ITSELF" AND THE CORRECT USAGE OF "IT'S.")

I, too, have been guilty in the past of holding Notre Dame to a higher -- or at least a different -- standard, which means I actually might have been buying into the whole, ridiculous "Notre Dame is somehow different" thing.

Notre Dame is just another university, albeit one that continues to do a fine job of marketing itself as a brand name.

Let's be honest: Does anyone really hear or see Notre Dame falling "all over itself telling everyone about its uncompromising dignity and unparalleled integrity." Quite the opposite, actually. Notre Dame seems to have the attitude, "Say anything you want as long as it's about us."

I was the one a few months ago who wrote here that Notre Dame should have been horribly embarrassed after "60 Minutes" aired a segment in which football coach Charlie Weis (IS HE HEADED TO THE NEW YORK GIANTS?) revealed a wicked temper and was shown using incredibly offensive language on the sidelines, including calling another school's player a "mother fu**er."

Today, I look back with the realization that Weis is just another collegiate football coach. The fact that he is at Notre Dame is meaningless. The standards are no different -- or higher -- in South Bend than anywhere else. Weis' hot temper and foul mouth, therefore, are no more important or interesting because he is at the University of Notre Dame than if he were at the University of North Dakota.

People should not be impressed by schools just because they have fancy French names.

I do not disagree with what you say.  I do completely disagree with those that say the weed bust is inconsequential and should be treated with a slap on the wrist at most.  That would be the punishment of a say UW-Madison.  A school like Mu or a school like ND that likes to potray itself acts a little differently.  And apparently the posters simply do not get it.  No crap getting busted with a bag of weed is not like rape or murder and in fact it could be argued that it is a relatively victimless crime.  That is not the lesson that a coach or a University should or would be teaching the young man.  The lesson is that of accountability, decision making, knowing that you are representing the University, Respect for your teammates and on and on and on.  Again MU suspended Zach Mcall for an entire season I think that was extremely harsh.  I would have been more for say 1 semester.  For ND to suspend him for any less than say 10 games would be akin to winking at him and saying becuase we are having a good season and you are a key part you are above the the law that we hold for our student athletes that represent this institution.  this will give ND a real opportunity to let everyone know wheteher they are a UW-Madison or a Ohio State type of program or whetehr they are a Duke or Marquette type of program.
without opening a whole nother can of worms I used Mu becasue they immediately uspended McCall for an entire season despite projecting to start for an NCAA tourney caliber team.  And Duke because regardless of the soap opera that has come out of it they showed the integrity to immediately suspend the entire lacrosse team.

My point is that many of those who run, attend or otherwise support Notre Dame are like many of those who run, attend and support most other major universities.

The Notre Dame "mystique," for lack of a better word, is largely a product of marketing and reputation molding, not of actual higher standards or attitudes that place values, morals and ethics above victories and money.

Behind and underneath all the "God and Notre Dame" nonsense is a university that differs little from many, many others. Its priorities are its notoriety, its wealth and the television audiences it draws to its Saturday afternoon football games.

I agree with you, Harrison. It will be extremely interesting to see how Notre Dame responds to having a player charged in an illegal-drug case.

I would not be surprised to see Notre Dame do what other universities have done under similar circumstances: Have the case pushed back until after the basketball season so the player can continue to take the court. It would be "wrong" and "unjust," after all, to suspend or otherwise penalize an athlete who has only been charged but not convicted of a crime.

HoopDreams

Has to be a coaches nightmare..too bad for the kid, but he cannot be too bright. Shows what kinda kids play at Notre Dame..haha. Once again, Notre Dame sucks.
