Jamil Wilson Update

The chatter is that an offer from Duke is probably not going to come.  It seems Coach K has set his sights on Harrison Barnes instead, a ridiculously talented 2010 prospect.  Duke already has offered Barnes, which shows how much he is coveted.  I'd list the other schools that have offered, but that list is at least 25% of all the teams that made the NCAA tournament.

No scholly available at the moment but Buzz will continue to recruit him.  

I still haven't seen anywhere where NC is even in the mix.  From all indications, Michigan State is probably the clear leader and his likely destination unless Izzo cools on the kid.  

Also, Jamil is still a highly ranked prospect as he still is in everyone's top 100, its just that his status has slipped a little from top 10 to top 50.  He has great potential with his ranking based more on that potential than finished product.  Needs to learn to bring it everytime on the court.  If he had a little more McNeal in him in terms of effort, he would still be ranked top 10.

I don't believe it was either Maymon or Wilson and not both.  If Wilson wanted to commit right after Maymon did, Buzz would have taken him, no doubt about it.  They both play the same position but Buzz would have worked it out as you don't say no to a top 50 player in your own backyard.  Its just that (a) with Maymon on board and playing a similar position, Wilson was no longer a must have recruit and (b) with Wilson will not willing to make a decision for quite some time, Buzz didn't want to risk losing a player he likes while waiting on the outcome from a kid where we are not even leading for his services.  If you trust Mark Miller and IWB, Buzz is still recruiting Wilson but it remains to be seen if we have the space for him.

and do not forget to add Williams into the whole no scholarships  same position argumnet.  Would love to sign as many top 50 kids as possible but there appears to be a log jam at the wing for the foreseeable future with Hayward, Fulce, Butler, Williams, and MAymon.   A great collection of talent right there in it's own right.  Still recruit him as a contingency but hopefully our focus is now on a 4-5 star 2g and a bigtime 4/5 for 2010.

When you play as poorly as Jamil has in the last 6 months to a year its pretty natural for people to change their opinion.

Justin Young of Rivals said that after watching him play at the Peach Jam that he was the most disappointing player there.


Hopefully he will turn things around but if people are down on him now they have good reason.

I remember reading up on the kid and thinking the program appeared to be heading downward, and this kid was not even like Top 300.

That was at the end of his junior or senior season. I can't find any links to prove or disprove my recollection, but I remember very well that Krunti was considered a stud prospect after his first couple seasons of high school basketball in Indy. He was a 6-foot-5 manchild as a freshman who put up major minutes and points on his school's varsity. Problem is, Krunti never really developed beyond that - or got any bigger - and ended up a not particularly athletic 6-foot-5 power forward in the college ranks.

Remember that Swartz's issues were more mental than anything else.  Marshall Williams was considered such a stud, and actually had a real good freshman year at NCSU.  From what I understand, he is a teacher in MPS right now...as is Jose Winston.

Note both the Dematha Players on that list. They lose to my HIgh School (Gonzaga) 3 times that year. Just goes to show Talent isn't the only reason you win basketball games and we shoudl remember that after the Crean years. Sometimes a little coaching goes a long way to making players better.

With all due respect ToughMover I don't think your comment holds alot of water.  At that time DeMatha had one greatest high-school coaches with Morgan Wooten -- who is featured in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield Mass.  DeMatha in those years (and many prior) was a powerhouse that consistently fed players to top-programs.  Morgan's players were talented and well coached.

Maybe Gonzaga has had success against DeMatha consistently, but using that as a chance to poke Crean doesnt make sense.

Exactly why judging recruiting classes before they start playing is kind of silly.

However, intuition tells me that there is a statistically significant correlation between the pre-judged strength of a recruiting class and the subsequent performance of a college team.

Example, in the previous three years, both Memphis and Kansas had two top 10 RSCI recruiting classes. 

A pre-judged, highly ranked recruiting class may not guarantee success, but I'd rather take my chances with one.

oh - and if you boil it down, pretty much everything we as fans do with sports is kind of silly.
