One thing seems obvious when looking at the difference between buzz and Crean....length.  I don't think you'll see many small gaurds like Crean recruited.

mviale

Buzz is literally running circles around crean.  We are in the hunt and percentages will eventually help us convert some of these.

You heard it here first. Davante Gardner will be a Beast this year.

Totally agree...it's like buzz has his hands in all the pots

For sure, Buzz and crew are really active on the recruiting end. Really putting MU ALL OVER the map. That's a good thing.

But the fact that he has only one year of heading coaching experience is still important for him to kick.

Hopefully - with a senior-led group and some wily athletes (more than could be said about his UNO team) - he can show us what he's got...or what THEY (coaching staff) got.

For one, it is great to have our name out there soo many times - it really does look like we are on it, all over it.  Still, we need to convert the best, but the attention MU is getting has to be good for us.  We are mentioned with some other pretty good schools - all good.

Gooooooooooo Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

what are you smoking? We have a couple of JUCO's coming in 2008 and a couple of nice players so far for 2009. what circles are you referring to. Oh, by the way, Crean went after his share of bigs in case your memory has faltered.

mviale

no worries - plenty of room on the bandwagon.  Get on while there is room.

Soccer Nut

Lets see if this clown can coach.  I have huge reservations about Buzz.  I am still in the "if he were so great, why didn't a school in Texas keep him' camp.

Several of MU targets for 2009 were interested in MU, because of Crean and at least two of them committed to Indiana. Because of this Buzz was almost starting over from scratch. It appears to me that he has put together a top notch staff. A staff that might be better than any of Crean's staff's. From there he and his staff have gone out accross the country and got us on the list of several solid players. It is conceively possible that the 2009 class will have 5 top 100 players. I certainly do not see him signing some of the filler players that Crean signed at MU.

I think Buzz has shown great success so far.
1) He conviced MU to give him the head coaching job.
2) He only lost one current player.
3) He kept Erik Williams commitment.
4) He signed JC player Butler
5) He put together a top notch coaching staff.
6) He did not waste the remaining scholarship for this year on a stiff like Crean would of.
7) He got a commitment from Maymon.
8) He has interest in several good players from coast to coast.
The only failure I seen so far is the loss of Taylor. Although, given
Hurley's attitude I do not think Buzz had a real chance of keeping Taylor. He never had a chance with Nick Williams.
Also it looks like he will not get the kid from Racine. However, given the several reports about how he does not always play hard, I question his work ethic, so I do not think this is a big loss. I rather get some of the other players MU is after that appear to be improving their national status.

Have to see if Buzz is a closer.  He may put in the effort and make a good sales pitch, but it's all about closing (getting that committment).  Soccer nut, totally classless and unmeritted calling our coach a clown.

I really think you are over thinking the coaching experience.  Its still basketball and college BB is mainly about recruiting.  If you can recruit you'll be successful.  The guy has been an assistant for years so he knows the game, he'll do fine.

RawdogDX

And the best thing about it is that you know that buzz keeps everything on the down low because he doesn't want to show off every move he makes to the media unlike that peacock crean.  He's an under the radar recruiter so his recruits will just be comitting out of the blue without us hearing about them ahead of time.

- kind of, sort of quote on buzz's recruiting methods by 80% of this board one month ago.

not that i'm complaining about the progress.

Daniel

I am not all that familiar with the UNO gig he had, but just maybe a 14 - 17 record the year he ran the program was an incredible turn-around for the school.  I would think he knows the game - but running your own big league team will be a challenge especially in the BEast which will be super-tough this upcoming yeat - but this will be the best group of kids he's ever coached - he should do well.

Like Coach Al said, forget the strategy, get better players!  Well, Buzz has some great ones now . . . and some solid ones coming in.  Let's get more!

Pardner

All I can say is:  Benford was a great hire.  He has opened up new recruiting avenues for MU with ties out West, Midwest.

Benford and Layer were both very nice hires.  Don't know much about Aki, but Benford and Layer will help with recruiting and X's and O's.  So far so good with Buzz...let's hope it continues.
