If we do not get a scholarship recruit this season could we give him a 1 year scholarship so that he gets a free education for a year?

I may be wrong but I don't think NCAA rules allow for a one year scholarships.  It's a four year full ride or nothing.  Otherwise, coaches could run kids out of the program by taking their scholarship away for any reason they desire (i.e., we have the full compliment of 13 kids on scholarship and Jamil Wilson wants to come, no problem, take away a scholarship from a benchwarmer).

scholorships go year be year for renewal. If a kid is recruited and receives a scholly then taking it away would be a BAD thing. If a kid is a walkon like Frozena and they have one open and give it to him for a year (with the understanding it is only for a year) and then take it away I think that is legit.

wades world is wrong scholarships are on a 1 year renewal basis.  Hence kids getting run out of programs, perfect examples are Crean running Krunti Hester off and most recently Crean running Deandre Thomas out of IU.  You are correct though it looks very bad whena coach does it and expect coaches going up against Crean over the nect few years to reference the Thomas situation.

Yep.  Majerus ran off 4 guys at SLU a few weeks ago.

I wasn't the one who said that, I was the one who asked the question, but thank you for clarifying.

1) If they award him a scholly, wouldn't that affect the grad score for MU?

2) Hasn't he left for Indiana yet?  ;)

If we don't pick up anyone, I think it would be great to give it to him for a year. It's definitely legit and happens quite often with our good friends to the West. Tanner Bronson and Kevin Gullickson were both on scholarship, so that would work.

In fact, rather than just pick up a warm body to fill the roster and play the part of the bench anchor for the next three-four years, I hope this happens if there isn't anyone worthy of that last spot.
